We are taking it WAY back for this weekend’s selections!  We find ourselves in 1986, on two special nights of the year- April Fool’s Day and Halloween.  The April Fool’s show contains the musical pun “Help > Slip > Bag,” as well as the Buddy Holly cover, “Not Fade Away.”  Early classics “Harry Hood, “You Enjoy Myself” and the old school rarities “Dear Mrs. Reagan” and “Alumni Blues” also grace the setlist.  This is classic stop amidst the genesis of Phish.  The Halloween show is much Phishier featuring many more old-school classics such as Slave, Bowie, Halley’s, “Fluffhead” and beyond.  This show is an early gem, foreshadowing the madness that would come in the future on All Hallow’s Eve.

SUMMER ’09 RUMOR MILL:

rumor2With so much excitement in the air around next summer, the rumors continue to roll in.  I have heard a few new things recently.  First, expect a month long tour mostly in June, including two nights at Alpine at the end of the month (6/25 & 6/26?).  An appearance at the mega-sized Rothbury Festival in Michigan seems like it will compliment the band’s slot at Bonnaroo.  Obviously, rumors are just rumors until we see dates on Phish.com, but to summarize what has been reported :

-Red Rocks 4 nights around July 4th

-The Gorge 3 nights

-Shoreline 3 nights

-Alpine 2 nights

-Bonnaroo and Rothbury

-Approximately a month long tour anchored in June

anyone else hope they dont play roo and roth?? they can pull 80,000 just by themselves… I dont want to see them with a bunch of other bands. I like phish at their own festies. just my 2 cents.

  2. Al Says:

Guess they wanna have a real mainstream spotlight in the media this time. A comeback on the radar of music industry, not like the Fall Tour 97, remember? I honestly hope for the best.

  3. Kash Says:

There is no way they will play at either one of those festivals. Are you crazy?

  4. Greg Says:

I hope they play Limestone instead of Roo or Rothbury!

  5. eric Says:

I pray they don’t play Bonaroo or Rothbury. Say it ain’t so. If the boys want to bring their solo projects there, fine, but please don’t have Phish play those mega-festivals.

  6. Mutha_Ohks Says:

I’m no hater, trust me, that’s why I like this site so much… but I feel like roth and especially bonnaroo are the ultimate sellouts. I just don’t know why they would do it- money? expansion of fan base? ease? It just doesn’t seem like Phish. I don’t really mind if they do it or not, but you won’t catch me there.

On another note, the picture of them at the top circa ’86 is taken at their house on King st. in burlington. Right behind them in the pic is the old Hood milk plant- yes the one that inspired Harry Hood. The plant still stands, as does the house.

The hood plant (which still goes by the same name) is converted into luxury condo’s and artist space. The house they lived in looks like it hasn’t had any work done since they lived there.

  7. waiting for full tour announcement Says:

i sincerely hope they decided to give the southeast some love. How about 3 nights at Lakewood or the new ampitheater in atlanta?

I agree about bonnaroo being a huge mistake. If you thought the ‘roo was crowded before…omfg…what a nightmare it would be! Phish paved the way for the mega fests like the Roo’. They don’t need to go backwards and cater to that fest. They need their own fest. And it would be perfect to plan it on the SAME WEEKEND as the Roo to keep it real.

i could possibly see them at the roth, since it is like what bonaroo used to be like before they sold out to metallica and kanye. But still, it would be a nightmare.

If they want to do a fest, then why not big cypress (instead of a 13,000 seat venue for the comeback shows???) I guess its too late to cry over spilled milk, but come on! Why make it so hard for regular folks to make it to a venue that can’t possibly hold enough people?

I am optimistic…and hope to see that announcement as soon as january 1st.

  8. mitch Says:

hahaha. same weekend. YES! that would be awesome, and they’d still draw a bigger crowd up in maine.

  9. Mr.Miner Says:

I agree with all of you. Just telling you what I hear. Phish should never share a bill.

  10. Eric from Jersey Says:

I really hope that Red Rocks is true. I doubt it, but I hope that it is true. They are just too good to be playing with all of those other bands at Roo. Maybe I am just getting old, but I prefer to go to a hotel and get some sleep so that I can actually enjoy the music the next day. The only way I want to see them to a festival is if it is their own gig, they don’t need any of those other bands (unless maybe Railroad Earth- then I wouldn’t complain)

  11. Al Says:

Sorry guys, on a totally different subject. I’m just listening to the 96/11/13 Minneapolis show. Who said 96 was a bad year? My gosh! Listen to this ripping 18 Min. Suzy Greenberg and you’ll change your mind – great show! And on this subject here: Let’s have a Limestone 2009 – how about: “GREAT that we WENT, but WHEE’L bring IT all back!” 😉

  12. MP Says:

    In re: Phish @ Bonnaroo

The organizers of that fest hinted that they were in negotiations with some “major acts” to use the space for other events, its my guess that Phish might play at the site, but not during Bonnaroo.

  13. Tom Says:

maybe beck will open for phish at bonnaroo….or maybe simpe plan….or maybe the jonas brothers……..

  14. Neemor Says:

I hear that Phish will be playing a two-leg summer tour which will include Bonnaroo but not Michigan, following it up with a three night Festival in California that will encompass the Halloween weekend where they’ll cover the Stones’ Exile on Main Street as well as a fall tour visiting such places as Portland CCCC, Cincy, Albany and MSG for a three night run.
    That would be sweet.
