Post-Football Food For Thought

What a weekend! Capped with an incredibly exciting Super Bowl, these last few days have been a roller coaster ride of Phish ticket mania.  With all tickets now sold, we may be seeing West Coast dates before too long.  Imagine what will happen to Live Nation’s site when Red Rocks goes on sale?  I don’t even want to.  Many of the frustrations we faced with their ticketing system are documented for their CEO here.  Nonetheless, as we all try to position ourselves for these summer shows, it is all finally sinking in- Phish is happening…

13699471image9b586be0479711d7…For those paying attention (I wasn’t), there was a Hampton re-release right after the Super Bowl ended.  A ticketless friend of mine pulled two for each night in six separate transactions, completely reversing his plans for the first week of March!  Maybe some of you scored too, but by the time I heard, there was nothing left.  This may continue to happen.  Be alert…

…Phish seems to be way under-priced, causing scalpers to drool at the profit margin they can make on our band and flock like vultures to the tickets.  While other bands of their stature use tiered ticket structures, charging well over $100 for the best seats, Phish should be respected for giving the people who actually get to buy tickets a real bargain.  But the increasing number of fans who have been forced to scalp from brokers have had to cough up an amount of money that much closer represents Phish’s “market value.”  It is becoming increasingly apparent that Phish’s “market value” today is between $100 and $400 dollars depending on the size of the venue and the quality of seat.  As someone on this comment board brought up over the weekend, would it help if Phish tickets cost $100, therefore decreasing the profit margin to be made by scalpers?  Maybe this is one step, albeit counter-intuitive, to reducing broker interference with the Phish scene.  If there isn’t enough money to be made, maybe they will go elsewhere?  Maybe not…

phish2People in Ashvelle got screwed on Friday. After being told that 400 tickets would be sold at the Civic Center, over 150 people waited for over a day to score these tickets.  The fans even organized their own list of names so people didn’t need to remain lined up, creating a mini-Phish lot party.  Yet when 10 am Friday came, an “error” in the Ticketmaster computer system released the 400 tickets that were to be held for Asheville’s box office, resulting in only twenty locals scoring stubs for the summer’s second smallest show.  Sorry Asheville people, that sucks…

…Let’s hear it for www.knoxvilletickets.com!  Out of the four ticket systems used for tickets this weekend, Knoxville’s seemed  by far the most efficient.  Granted they probably weren’t hit with nearly the traffic of Live Nation or St. Louis’ Metrotix, but the system worked smoothly.  I looked for Knoxville on Live Nation before realizing they were being sold elsewhere.  Quickly logging onto knoxvilletickets.com, I was automatically queued and the screen refreshed every 60 seconds, like Metrotix did for The Fox.  However, unlike Metrotix where I never saw another screen, I was quickly brought into the site, pulled up a 100 level after searching for a floor ticket twice, and checked out without hassle.  Compared to all my other attempts this weekend, this was a breeze…

image-ba5300d6449611d7…Hampton is now officially one month away! What once seemed like an eternity has been condensed to only four weeks of waiting.  What seemed like fantasy is now an impending reality!  Using the future tense to predict what might happen will soon be out the window, as we will be talking about what Phish is doing on a nightly basis.  There couldn’t be a more fitting venue than Hampton to launch round three; with a purely GA free for all, things will be insane and explosive to say the least.  People have referenced the last comeback, saying these Hampton shows will merely be sloppy warm-ups.  And while I agree that Summer will be a different story when all is said and done, I have a feeling these first three shows are gonna’ be a hell of a lot different from the last return.  I’m not going on anything but intuition, but it just feels different- way different…

…I guess Phish 3.0 is all about trading tickets online.  In a flurry like nothing I’ve ever seen, fans have been wheeling and dealing all over the web, trading, selling, and scoring any and all tickets they need.  I like it; it’s very democratic.  While I do believe you can get tickets at shows, it is always nicer to have yours beforehand, and it seems like more fans are trying to do that.  This can only be a good thing.  I am trying to devise a tool to facilitate this exchange. Stay tuned…

camman, after i get my pair, i’ll keep my eyes and ears peeled for you.

just remember. if its really up to us vets to show the new guys around let me school you on something. dont scalp to other fans. i was reading stuff the other day about you saying you would do whatever it takes. scalping isnt in the whatever it takes column. karma is a tricky bitch. treat her right and she will love you back. dick her over and she will make sure you pay for it. quite literally if you scalp some fans, karma wont hook you up with tix and you will pay a lot to brokers and other scalpers.

there are a lot of people on this board looking out for you. you are gonna get your tix. if you start scalping, thats a slap in the face to all of us who want you in the show with us. with this being said, im gonna try and find you some tix right after i get my buddy and me in.

  2. Mitch Says:

    my camden for your fox.
your new camden for dc pavs.

sidenote: ive got 2 pavilion to camden for your dc pavs. (then were on phishman)

  3. camman Says:

i wont scalp man… i was just in a pissed mood and what i was saying came out the wrong way…. i dont have it in my heart to do that to other phans who i know want to see these guys as bad as me…

  4. camman Says:

i do know the ways of karma quite well…

  5. Selector J Says:

“the fact that these shows were in a stadium didn’t make them less of a great show by any means ;)”

I have to respectfully disagree. Think if those shows were in a theater… All things being equal, you go from a show you really liked to a mind-blowingly amazing show. It’s not exactly a coin flip, for me.

It’s all a moot point because, as many have pointed out, Phish is not playing stadiums anytime soon.

    […3 hours to reggae time.]

  6. Mitch Says:

either way im looking for 3. my boy, me and you. id throw miner in there but he told me he already has his.

  7. camman Says:

thanks mitch, i really really apperciate that

  8. camman Says:

hey selector j, what did you mean 3 hours until reggae time?

  9. NateKap Says:

I noticed that some of you got your Hamptons. I was excited to go home to find mine. But bummed to not find that glorious UPS package waiting for me. I’ve got both Phish and TM tix. Did anyone else not receive theirs?

btw- i’m new here, but the phever is back. may have a GW pav or a few Camden lawns for a JB thurs. not sure what i’m doing yet.

  10. HYHU Says:

Wow Mitch your the man. Ive been a devoted phan for almost 3 years which I guess puts me in the “next generation” category alongside cam. Ive heard and read about the community over the last few years but reading your last few posts made a great and “real” impression on me.
    Thanks for that.
On that note, if you (or anyone) come across any extras for Jones Beach or Camden please lemme know!!!

  11. Selector J Says:

    Ha!

I was curious to see the if there were any ticket broker websites that track the prices of ticket sales (I haven’t found any yet) but instead I found this website:
    http://www.exticketbroker.com/
The guy has two posts about Phish at Hampton (one stating that they are the most anti-scalping fanbase he’s ever encountered.)

    Ha!

I’ll let you know if I find my ticket price-tracking website. (I can’t go but I was curious to see the arc of the Hampton prices. My guess is they’ve plateaued and will start to fall in the next couple of weeks. But this hypothesis has no basis in fact. And by the way, who the hell are these guys trying to fool with the tiered pricing for a GA show? Not big on ethics, scalpers.)

  12. Selector J Says:

    @ camman:

Three hours until I do my reggae show on the radio. It’s on at 9pm CST on http://www.kvrx.org (or if you’re in Austin (probably not… maybe?), 91.7FM

  13. camman Says:

haha right on Selector j, i may just tune into that..

i’m going to say this just once…

Gawd damn i want to meet some hot hippie chicks out on tour this summer….

  14. Selector J Says:

    http://www.exticketbroker.com/
Wow. We’ve been saying a lot of the same stuff as this guy on his blog. If we weren’t so anti-scalper, Phish fans would be great scalpers;)

There’s even a post on the very question (from the other point of view, ie. scalper POV) I was trying to answer: God forbid it ever came to it, but when would be the ideal time to buy tickets from a broker. This guy seems to back up my theory. (In other words: Be patient, grasshoppers.)

  15. Selector J Says:

    @Camman
If you tune in, I’ll play you the best “Have Mercy” you’ve ever heard. (The original.)

  16. camman Says:

    will do man!

  17. camman Says:

i am itching for that phunking bonnaroo announcement man!!!!!

  18. full tour: announced! Says:

sector j — can you play some old school jacob miller on the show tonight?

  19. time for the last rewind Says:

I’ve been checking the Hampton page on Ticketmaster almost daily for the past 6 months in hopes of a re-release…I was able to score Cubs playoff tickets at Wrigley by doing the same thing….of course Hampton was released the night of the Super Bowl. Here’s hopin’ for another release or a simulcast. If nothing else at least Miner is gonna hook us up with what I’m sure will be an amazing blog/download.

Also I’ve got a few extra lawns for Star Lake that I scored through the lottery if anyone got shut out this past weekend.

  20. HYHU Says:

Star lake tix? Send me an email roadsplt99@gmail.com

  21. camman Says:

according to the guy above… BONNAROO ANNOUNCEMENT IN 2 HOURS!!!!!!!!!

  22. spideyguy0 Says:

Selector, Stub Hub has a price tracker, but you can only see it if you’re selling tickets to the event. I’d try adding fake tix for Hampton to Stub Hub at a crazy high price that nobody would ever buy, then taking a look at the price tracker, and then removing the listing.

  23. Selector J Says:

Full Tour: Got Jacob Miller queued up.

Check the Have Mercy about to drop.

  24. time for the last rewind Says:

Who’s the act, besides Phish of course, that you would most like to see at Bonnaroo?

Mine would be Daft Punk, Portishead, Arcade Fire, Disco Biscuits or Radiohead again.

I saw Radiohead back in ’06 at the ‘Roo and it was pretty amazing, but I think my personal highlight from that evening would be dancing to Sasha at the late night tent til the sun came up.

  25. showhe Says:

Doods….we soooo need to start that non-profit scalper site that only sells tickets for face value…how bad would that tick off real scalpers! If I only was wealthy enough to start it up. I guess the ticket board is as close as we’ll get.
