Weekend Nuggets: Fuji Rock ’99
DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:
This weekend we have the two headlining gigs from Phish’s first trip to Japan in Summer ’99. Playing on the isolated “Field of Heaven” stage, Phish treated the predominantly Japanese audience with two blistering shows, carrying their momentum from their extensive US tour to the Far East. Highlights abound throughout these two shows, including two phenomenal second sets. The 31st was held down by the huge “2001 > Bowie,” opening the flowing second set with some extended improv. A late set “Fluffhead” fir perfectly as a cathartic release to this frame.

8.1.99 (phish.com)
The last night of Summer ’99 was certainly one of the best. With a second half that boasted a “Tweezer,” a “Mike’s Groove,” and a “YEM,” the last set of the summer was chock full of musical fireworks. In addition to the well crafted second set, the first read like a “Who’s Who” of old-school Phish songs. This is a show that is required for any complete collection, and its a SBD, taboot, taboot.

VIDEO OF THE WEEKEND
Fuji Rock Festival Montage 1999 (You get a great feel for the festival)
Here’s a link to an article written by a Phan on Jambase as to why Phish will be better than ever this time around. I tend to agree.
http://www.jambands.com/Features/content_2009_02_22.01.phtml
The writer says that Mike is completely at the top of his game now (and I agree) – Check out this short clip of Mike and Phil Lesh playing together,

If I’m not wrong, I think it’s from Essex Jct. VT in July of 2006, I was there, and I have the disc, and the jam is great. Anyway, I can not wait for the No-spoilers. Only 6 more days to go!!!
^^ I gotta say that article is the most absurd piece of writing I’ve read in ages. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Formulas? Based on personal opinion? Huh?
obviously Phish will be better than ever, but not for these quasi-scientific reasons..lol
What’s going down on Field of Heaven stage this summer?
???
@ Miner – true that, the article is absurd, but I agree with your opinion that Phish will be better than ever. 🙂
..I was at Roseland, Wallingford and Albany for the TAB shows…and he is on.
…On , in terms of music (good). Not on, in terms of…well, you know (bad).
Can’t wait for Hampton!!!!!!!!!! By the way, last night I listened to a MONSTER show that nobody talks about: Philly 12/28/96. This one, Miner, needs to be released – check your files;-) Much love
off topic.
But i saw Disco biscuits last night in boston. OMG
these guys are tearing things up. I have seen them about 15 times, and right now they are really peaking as a band.
not going to compare music to phish, but from the crowd energy, Security just gave up 5 minutes in. totally real heads, barely any douches. They are still off the grid enough to avoid the outside non-interested crowd.
Felt more like my early Phish days than anything anything i have seen in 10 years, and that includes Phish 2.0.
Miner, You seem to really be in the right place at the right time nowadays.
I suggest anyone who is anxious waiting for summer tour try and go see these guys asap.
i am in the Hampton lot right now. the band is already here. have heard them inside warming up, heard a Curtis Lowe, Walfredo, Tela, Mocking Bird, Camel Walk, Peaches and Carini.
^^ WooB Hybrid ^^ McGrupp- On the lot 5 days early, trying to sell kind grill cheese. LMAO. Is it true their practicing Spock’s Brain? Post a picture!
^^^1 for 2 or 3 for 5 plus a free laced Fruit Punch! LMAO.
Cactoid just drove by on a golf cart, said hello, chit-chatted about the 1st night, offered him a chocolate chip krispie treat, and then he said headz-up on 3-set Opener, including a cover album: One from the Vault
Destiny Unbound is great because it’s so simple, almost childlike. I was at the Nassau show when they busted it out almost exactly a 6 years from today at Nassau 2-28-03. It was pretty sweet. Second song of the night…they could’ve played contact and Bouncin for the rest of the night and I would’ve been satisfied. Oh yeah, Soul Shakedown was cool too. I wish I could make it to Hampton…those shows really could blow the roof off the place. No joke.
Hey Miner,
Thank you so much for your site! I check daily and love the info about the old days. These are two news ideas I thought would be cool:
1. The history of Destiny Unbound and everything surrouding it.
2. The Worst of Phish…..I thought it would be cool to contrast great phish with not so great phish….maybe so we can appreciate it more.
Hope you reading this….
Thanks!
