It’s Only Getting Better

3.7.09 (C. Jones)

3.7.09 (C. Jones)

With a show that brought the fire from the “Sanity” opener to the “Tweeprise” encore, Phish left the audience in awe and salivating for summer tour.  With a setlist that reads as a joke, Phish created a “perfect” show.  The band absolutely left no doubt in anyone’s mind or heart as to who their favorite band on the planet is again.  After nearly twelve hours of emotional and enthralling Phish music, I’m spent.  I will absolutely write about the show in detail, but it is going to have to be after a day of transit back to the west coast.

In a nutshell, the band took their final step from somewhat structured jamming into completely free flowing improv with a 22 minute exploration of “Down With Diesease.”  And the fantasy setlist became a joke when the combination of “Twist > 2001 > Moma” dominated the second half of the set.  Phish is back.  Miner is out.

No Spoilers is up for all three nights!!

it was the second suzy solo – maybe a moog, but i asked that question too and it could be something he’s always had but never used. and the keytar is a new thing. i kinda didn’t believe it at first cause of the pure 80s-ness of it

@guy…that new effect page used wa sin “suzy” and it was different than the keytar. The “suzy” effect was some new kind of synth….very sick!

  3. showhe Says:

@ guy…it was Suzy and a spectacular one at that. Dug the new synth sound page kicked out in that song..

well sick, i hope he busts that out at great woods. the pictures from last night of him playing it look awesome, and i have yet to hear it, as i am only on bathtub gin – i’m assuming I can say song named now that the show is over?

    Guys & Gals –

This band played close to 100 songs in 3 nights. And those are Phish songs, not your Top 40 Billboard.

If that doesn’t make a statement and set a tone for you, I’m not sure you should see them this summer.

    I mean HOLY SHIT!

No, the playing wasn’t ‘ON’ 100% of the time, but if that’s what you expected, well then shame on you!

Each night had it’s highlights and it may be different for each person and their tastes (how ’bout that TASTE!?!).

Ultimately Phish is back with avengance and shredded Hampton into pieces.

I cannot wait till Summer Tour.

I think Page has decided that he wants to be front and centre! No more hiding behind all the keys all the time for him. Dial up his volume, get some new sounds, and if that’s not enough, grab a keytar a literally get in the middle of the stage. Frankly, I love it. PLAY IT LEO!

good looking out fellas! Yeah, it was quite sick. In my drunken, stoned state, that sound hit me like a ton of bricks!! Great Suzy indeeed.

Dude, Full Tour, props to the Revenge of the Nerds shout out. One of my all time favorite movies, and one my girlfirend had never seen until she met me (what????) and now, that scene with them playing that rediculous song is one of her favorites!!!

  10. guyforget Says:

somebody said something earlier that was wierd. Did they really change the stage set up and move Fish last night??????? Weird if so….

  11. gtgwbab2495 Says:

Yes that new effect on suzy was ridiculous! What was that? It sounded like a talk-box.

  12. full tour! Says:

@guy…lol…that’s awesome! there is no better 80’s movie than the original “nerds” IMHO.

I was in a band once and we tried to cover that song…pretty terrible rendition, but it was fun watching that scene over and over again trying to get the nuances of that song down. “Lambda Lambda Lambda and omega moo!”…lol

we also covered “soulfinger” from “spies like us”…which is also surprisingly similar to the “ghostbusters” song!

i love those 80’s movie tunes..i’m surprised phish hasen’t attempted the “nerds” climax song at a halloween show…or tom marshall guest spot!

  13. hairy pood Says:

cool synth sounds at the end of disease, too. 4 across all weekend. anyone know if they’ve ever played she thinks i still care before? i love that song, my band used to cover it.

    canman –

i know you are joking. cause no person who once made some sense could make that little sense now. there is no basis for anything you are saying expect the basis that you are joking. have fun with the next band you are into.

  15. voopa Says:

They kept the classic stage lineup last night. Check the photos:

Laugh Out Loud at the guy who said Phantasy Tour is real life truth. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  18. R1 Says:

^fulltour – i’m sure you weren’t saying that it’s actually originally from spies like us (which is awwwwesome by the way), but soulfinger is a classic soul tune by the Bar-Kays

  19. RobAins Says:

Yeah, that was me who mentioned Fishman moving last night. I was wrong, I guess someone slipped in an old photo into the slideshow I was looking at. I’m much happier with the 4Wide setup!

  20. shpongleyez Says:

So, so, so glad Page is BACK. Watch out!

  21. full tour: announced! Says:

@r1…. def knew it was bar kays…..but spies like us made it a household name round russians saying “soouull fingree!” sounded cool…lol

  22. tyler Says:

great long post by Crowther, very to the point.

I’m new to this site this weekend and like it more all the time. It’s very rare to like a site more based on comments. But this has been a thoughtful discussion, including the meta-discussion about constructive criticism vs. hating.

RE: the super awesome KEYTAR – that is a hilarious new in-joke referencing the original version of the song as performed by Edgar Winter. EW was the original “master” of the keytar and famously played the crap out of it in live performances of the song. You can probably find a version on Youtube – my favorite is from the Old Grey Whistle Test, a BBC music show. It’s like 8 minutes long and is one of the most ludicrously over-the-top things I have ever seen; it’s simultaneously actually really awesome and also ironically/comically awesome. At first you think “oh cool” then you think “wow that’s pretty silly” then “holy crap this is ridiculous” then finally all the way back round to “fucking A, that totally rocks.” Highly recommended.

In fact the whole Old Grey Whistle Test vol. 1 DVD collection is pretty great. But that’s what the keytar is about.

  23. R1 Says:

tyler – you’re a very welcome addition to the board man. nice keytar knowledge dropping

  24. anabiono Says:
