March Madness

As the NCAA tournament takes peak form this weekend in the rounds of sixteen and eight, a different type of March Madness has swarmed the Phish community in the form on ticket on-sales.  After the near-impossible Red Rocks mission, fans look to have more success against the weaker seeded shows this weekend.  Big match-ups against both Ticketmaster and Live Nation headline today’s slate. The host venues of these battles will be The Gorge, Merriweather, Darien, and SPAC.  The fans look to give it 110% in their quest for paper glory.  After today the first nine tickets of late summer will have come and gone, and only Shoreline and Hartford will remain.  On a raucous Friday in March, the madness is most definitely in the air.

“Madness” is a word often used loosely to describe Phish music.  Honing in on this idea of “musical madness,” I compiled eight Phish jams that embody this word.  A friend on mine recently posted on Facebook “The Best Five Albums to Listen to After a Phish Show,”  and yesterday, another buddy retorted, “What are the best albums to listen to while frantically trying to score Phish tickets via public sale?”  Well here is my response.

The music should match the mania, and these eight selections fit the theme of the day.  In honor of March Madness- both ticket and basketball- I have collected an “Elite Eight” jams that are the musical definition of madness; allow them to color your weekend in any way you please. The download link is above the track listing.  Good luck today!  I’ll always take any extra pavilions off your hands.  Just drop me a line!

“Bathtub Gin” 11.23.97, Winston Salem, NC

This one is a beast that dominates the second set that could be better than its legendary Hampton predecessors.

“Simple” 11.29.98, Worcester, MA

Hampton (P.Washburn)

Hampton (P.Washburn)

I’ve written about this one before- a masterful, tour-ending  piece of psychedelic sorcery.

“David Bowie” 10.27.95, Kalamazoo, MI

A dark and monstrous “Bowie” from Fall ’95, one high point for the song.

“Split Open and Melt” 12.1.94, Salem, OR

A dark-horse jam in the first set that illustrates ’94 Phish going for the jugular.

3.8.09 (Unknown)

3.8.09 (Unknown)

“Tweezer” 12.2.95, New Haven, CT

A “Tweezer” like none other- fifteen minutes of the most seething music you’ll ever hear.

“Maze” 10.18.96, Pittsburgh, PA

A highlight of this dark-horse ’96 show, this “Maze” gets way out there in a hurry.

“Stash11.12.94, Kent, OH

Dark and terrorizing, like “Stash’s” should be, this version characterizes the depths to which ’94 Phish plunged to in no time at all.

12.7.95 “Mike’s > Weekapaug,” Niagara Falls, NY

One of the best “Grooves” out there, each half boast stand out jamming- though the “Mike’s” takes the cake.

(Note: This is not meant to be a definitive list of “the” eight craziest jams.  ever- just eight pieces of madness.)

Congrats Davey! 🙂 No luck here… That online/telephone bullshit was really rough, it looks like it sold out in 10 minutes!

  2. Mr. Completely Says:

note also lines were longer at more obscure TM locations than I have ever seen. Went to my standby at 11:15 and there were 15 in line. My wife called around and found even boonier location, I did 85 on the way there are was 6th in line & barely ended up getting my 4+2

  3. Chalkdustin Says:

Have been away from this site for a while today, but it looks like most people here got at least some of the tickets they wanted. Good to hear! Hope to see some of you this summer!

  4. cottle Says:

What a shitty day to have to be responsible, and do work related stuff. Stupid job got in the way of me trying to get SPAC or Gorge.

I’ve given up hope on Gorge and RR, since those are on the other side of the country anyways, but if anyone has extras to SPAC or Merriweather, post here and we’ll get up. FACE is what I’m offering (I can throw in a few extra for the service fees and shipping, but that’s it). I’d love to trade, but I have no extras for anything. Maybe if tomorrow goes smoothly I’ll have an extra Hartford or two. Ideally I’d love to find two SPAC’s and two Merriweathers, but I’m down for whatever. Lawn seats are fine. The boys alwasy sound better from the lawn than they do from the parking lot. 🙂

  5. slave2traffic Says:

Congrats to those that hooked it up… condolences to those that didn’t. The only thing today taught me is that TM is much better than LiveNation…

My group has 2 Gorge 8/7 and 2Gorge two-night passes… trying to turn some of these into Ashevilles primarily, maybe Camdens. I’ll post on the trading board once dates are updated, but in the meantime let me know!

  6. cottle Says:

    Oh, and BTW…

CONGRATS to everyone who scored today!!!

This might be the most positive response this board has seen on any public on-sale date so far in 09.

  7. Davey Says:

I went to the booniest one I could find. 7 in line and 6 got em.

  8. SOAM Says:

Forget-If I can swing it-Gorge but sofar 6 of 8 easties and still working it….late

  9. Davey Says:

I think we’ve stumbled across the only way to get tickets. Get your butt up and go get em’ yourself. It’s more of a chance that the crappy internet thing we got going. That shit doesn’t work ever. I’ll never forget hearing “912122” you’re first. BOOYEAH!!!

  10. notkuroda Says:

We’re in too. I’ve got tix to 10 shows if you include the 2 roo shows. I’m so fuckin ready!!!

  11. Mr. Completely Says:

so the shows are like next week right?

…are you telling me I have to wait til AUGUST?!?!?!?

  12. In Flagrante Delicto Says:

Question for the board: how do we handle a trade of an early summer show for a late summer show with a total stranger, if the June shows will pass before the August tickets ship in mid-July. Essentially, one would have to hand over a June ticket with the hopes that the other person in the deal doesn’t enjoy the June show then forget your ass exists come August.

Any thoughts? This is where I do see the value in Stubhub, actually.

  13. Davey Says:

“so the shows are like next week right?”

    I so wish they were.

  14. Davey Says:

I don’t know how that would work out. Gotta trust the guy. I wouldn’t do it with a total stranger though cuz you might get screwed.

  15. Davey Says:

Stubhub doesn’t trade tickets though. They just sell them at ridiculous prices.

  16. slave2traffic Says:

    @ In Flagrante Delicto
That’s a good question and one that I’m actually going to have to answer sooner rather than later… hope for good karma?

  17. Frankie Says:

On another note, thank you very much for the picks Mr. Miner… MADNESS indeed! Love that 12/2/95 Tweezer!! So much energy!

  18. bunitingi Says:

Mr. Miner, just to change the subject a second, i LOVE when do offer these Picks. LOVE it. I get tired to entire shows and rummaging through for a track here a track there… i SO prefer to have someone do it for me. LOVE when you do the picks. LOVE it.

  19. tba Says:

Gorge selling out in minutes? And I thought watching The Clippers to a packed house was ironic being our economic state. Is it just me or does someone else think the Chinese don’t have a snowballs chance in hell on collecting from us.

  20. Mr. Completely Says:

Unless you have a trusted person in common it is difficult to verify identities online. If you have a verified identity you at least have recourse of some type if you get screwed.

A common way to do it involves webcams. Both parties online at the same time, each person shows their face and ID to the camera, and (if possible) carries the cam to actually show the physical address on their house or apt or whatever.

But that’s a lot to go through and is still scammable. It comes down to trust, which is unfortunate.

  21. Davey Says:

Contractual agreement. Sign a contract and have him sign it too via fax or something.

  22. Billy Breathes Says:

I have 4th Row Dead Center to Darien Lake. Looking to trade for THE SAME to Deer Creek or Alpine….

    🙂

  23. R1 Says:

A contract is only useful if you’re going to be willing and able to spend the time, money, and enormous hassle to actually bother litigating the matter. I suppose as a pure deterrent it’s of some value, but . . .

  24. R1 Says:

^4th row Dead for 4th row Phish straight up????? good luck with that.

hey, i have some tickets to the south dakota state fair i’m looking to trade for red rocks

  25. Billy Breathes Says:

    @R1

what’s wrong with that offer? are you envious?

I’m asking to trade SICKO tickets for the same SICKO tickets.
