Weekend Nuggets: Gamehendge SBDs

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

gamehendge-plateThis weekend, I am featuring the second and third full Gamehendge performances- both in SBD format.  Both shows are hallmarks of the analog days, and both showcase a very different version of Phish than we know today.  Legend has it that the band broke out their musical fable at Sacramento in ’93 due to the intimate and attentive audience.  The ’91 edition, performed in Olympia, WA and coming in an extended first set, was bookended by some Phish classics.  Both shows are a must for any collector.

  • With these two shows, all five Gamehendge sets (3.12.88, 10.13.91, 3.22.93, 6.26,94, 7.8.94), plus Trey’s original project can be downloaded from this site.

    Great Video! Thanks.
Hey, for all guys who fell in LOVE with the youtube video of Trey playin’ St. Steven solo from Phil’s Camden Tweeter Center show 2006:
Here you can download that show:

  2. whole tour! Says:

intimate and (hopefully) attentive = asheville? st. louis?

  3. hairy pood Says:

north shore surf club… is that where jake’s is now? any old school oly heads here? i know that used to be the tropicana, and slayer played there at one point. big name bands that aren’t from this town sometimes leave more of a local legacy than the bands from here that left international legends.

Miner- you mentioned “With these two shows, all five Gamehendge sets (3.12.88, 10.13.91, 3.22.93, 6.26,94, 7.8.94), plus Trey’s original project can be downloaded from this site.” where can i find those?

  4. ColonelJoy Says:

I think a hendge bust-out is more likely than at any time in the last 15 years, or at least anytime in the last 5:)

I wouldn’t guess at a venue. I imagine something unique is planned for Roo late night, but probably not hendge. Where is halloween…Albany is a boring location, but I guess close to the original spot….glenn falls…interesting…

  5. Al Says:

Oh man, I fell in love with the Phil Lesh & Phriends shows!!!!
Great Phil & Trey SBD show from the Beacon Theater NYC 2006 download here:

  6. Billy Breathes Says:

with only one show at Deer Creek….keep an ear out!

but with St Louie being the intimate show before…

could be a very special 2 show run….especially after the BONAROO chaos.

  7. Billy Breathes Says:

Wow what a SPLIT! Had me freaked watching it on my 21″ flat screen.

    Great lighting.

Overall I would classify this as “Tenaciously Loose”.

Very intensely psychedelic and they brought back nicely.

Shout out to whoever shot that vid….GREAT JOB.

  8. Al Says:

@Billy Breathes: There are a lot more of these great Hampton (HD) Vids on youtube. Check it out:

  9. OlFactoryHugh Says:

Your hopes are better spent on a Time Turns Elastic Narration than a Gamedendge. Phish doesn’t like to repeat themselves. Expecting special is good, but expecting the same special thing is going to let you down.

Me? I’m expecting to see them on stage with the Dead tonight. Set II Wolfman’s!

  10. Al Says:

My expectations for the summer are NEW songs!!! New jams!!! A progress…

  11. hooks Says:

i’m sorta curious what others think about this. i’m not convinced gamehendge will be performed again, this summer or anytime. course, i’d love to be lucky enough to catch it if they did do it. it seems like such a Trey trip. since they were so different in the earlier days, it was appropriate to drop it here and there from the arsenal of live show ideas. but it would sound inherently different, musically, if they did bust it out again, and everybody would flip… i’d rather hear a unique set of crazy inspired jams, hot intricate playing, segues, and raw energetic interplay with all four guys. (i’m sure if i was AT at show where they dropped gamehendge, my views would change a little)

  12. wanderin Says:

Does anyone remember the talk of a gamehendge cd-rom / animation that was discussed way back when 93-94-95 ??? I thought I remembered reading about it in the Schvice too (although reading it in the Schvice is very fuzzy).

  13. Pence Says:

didnt see any thing about gamehenge animation, but you shouls remember this.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1BdWdkg52M

  14. funky_son_of_a_b1tch Says:

    @OlFactoryHugh
I agree with this call. they never repeat themselves!
    but harpua?

  15. Matthew Andress Says:

@hooks: Isn’t it your hope to hear GH live part of all of the experience? I know for me, I am waiting for the day it happens again.

Love the 3.22.93. This show happened the day before my 13th birthday. I didn’t know of Phish and would not know of them for another 5 years. Now, I can’t imagine my life without them.

RE: 3.22.93…the crowd is tiny! Kinda reminds me of YMSB shows. A totally different era, yet highly familiar. I wanna hear an Uncle Pen this summer!

  16. hooks Says:

as far as my comment earlier…not meaning to discount the history of it. and as always, thx for the DLs miner!

  17. Mr.Miner Says:

you can always search terms and dates using the search bar up top…

the project and the debut set are attached to the article I linked….and Great Woods ’94 was a Weekend Nuggets, so you can use the tag cloud to find that one

  18. Mr.Miner Says:

they are not gonna perform Gamehendge again. (IMO)

  19. RamblinOnMyMind Says:

Pence, thanks for that video. It made me think immediately of the opening to The Grateful Dead Movie. I don’t know how the First Tube video was animated, but I’m sure it was a fraction of the time and effort Jerry and co. had to put into things back in ’75 or so. (Check out the bonus features on the Grateful Dead Movie DVD – so much time and tedium involved in that stuff.)

I agree with Miner about Gamehendge. With a new studio album, Time Turns Elastic, each guy’s solo stuff, and the unexplored material from some of the 2.0 albums, I would doubt they’re looking to revisit Gamehendge in its entirety. Especially since they’ve talked so much about new directions and new touring conditions and all that, they probably wouldn’t want to revert back to Trey’s college days too much. Maybe for a 30th anniversary or something, but it seems like ’09 is about moving forward (while maintaining the back catalogue, of course).

Now watch them bust out a full Gamehendge at Phenway 🙂

  20. Mr. Completely Says:

It seems very unlikely, but I wouldn’t put it past them to bust it out one more time. Who knows, I have given up on thinking I can guess what they’ll come up with

thanks for the SPAC 04 tip. the improv from the first night is amazing, but it’s trey’s tone and phrasing in Jiboo and Limb that kill me – those solos are perfect. It’s among the finest music I have ever heard. Amazingly beautiful. That 6.19 second set is just staggering from start to end.

  21. RamblinOnMyMind Says:

@Mr. C – did you find an alternate source for those shows, or did you cave and pay the ten bucks for the livephish.com version?

  22. Billy Breathes Says:

they will play it again….wouldn’t you want to?

i do however believe there will be certain songs shelved.

    i have a few in mind…

  23. hooks Says:

with our collective imagination, surely the possibilities of a modern visit to gamehendge are limitless. but it’s not exactly my holy grail of phish experiences. maybe just because i don’t think they’ll do it again, for the same reasons you guys mentioned before. if we keep psyching it out of the question, maybe GH will show up again!…..

  24. OlFactoryHugh Says:

If Phish repeated their greatest moments from the past we’d miss out on all the greatest moments from the future.

  25. hooks Says:
