Weekend Nuggets: Gamehendge SBDs
DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:
This weekend, I am featuring the second and third full Gamehendge performances- both in SBD format. Both shows are hallmarks of the analog days, and both showcase a very different version of Phish than we know today. Legend has it that the band broke out their musical fable at Sacramento in ’93 due to the intimate and attentive audience. The ’91 edition, performed in Olympia, WA and coming in an extended first set, was bookended by some Phish classics. Both shows are a must for any collector.
- With these two shows, all five Gamehendge sets (3.12.88, 10.13.91, 3.22.93, 6.26,94, 7.8.94), plus Trey’s original project can be downloaded from this site.

Here is a Phish Thoughts piece on Gamehendge I wrote a while back.

VIDEO OF THE WEEKEND:
“Split Open and Melt” 3.7.09, Hampton, VA
I’ve been waiting a long time to replace my old SBD of the Oly Gamehendge. Love this show. Thanks!
As much as I’d love to hear a GH I kind of let go of that dream around the late nineties. It just doesn’t seem like their heads are in it, and quite honestly, I can’t blame them. I do remember reading somewhere that Mike especially was not really into the GH thing, that he looked at it as a Trey project.
To be honest, in my GH chasing days, it seemed like I wanted it more for the “I was there, I saw it” aspect. I’d love a GH, as historical as it would be, but a tight set with flawless seques, and a Harpua->Mock, or Mcgrupp, would please me just fine.
If they do decide to bust it out, it will be in a very unpredictable location, IMO. I played the guessing game for so long with Phish (Radio City Hendge, Big Cypress album cover, etc, etc), but I learned that when you expect something really crazy and different to happen, they surprise you with something ‘ordinary’ yet extraordinarily played. Sort of like Miner’s Cypress write-up…everybody had a theory for the midnight set…and I bet NOBODY predicted seven hours of just straight, commonplace phish tunes, (although the song choice was the ONLY thing commonplace about that set.)
how do i plug my labtop into my flat screen? im am not gifted at all when it comes to technology.
i thought possumm was the end of gamehendge?
that split got the blood flowing again…waiting for fenway
Dun-Dun Dun-Dun WILLLLLLLLLLLLLIIIAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMSSSS!
Edit above post: I meant Forbins->Mock, not Harpua->Mock…although I certaintly wouldn’t complain either way…
History is made from stories passed by generations. It would be a shame if phish didnt do gamehenge just so we didnt miss out on some unknown moment in the future. Why cant the story be reinvented? They replay songs all the time and they are different all the time, why does gamehenge have to be any different. Its the same thing about Destiny Unbound, I think its a case about them wanting to play it, but they just forgot how. Well maybe I shouldnt say “forgot how” but I m sure it takes a lot of practice to ensure its done right. Even if the best band ever is the one trying to remaster it.
anyone trying to download older mediafore links- Mediafire is having issues right now, but be patient, it should work itself out. (This is why I switched my file hosting to Amazon!)
Had another Phish dream. This time I got miracled into an unannounced show at some venue on the east coast. Super small venue, around 2000 people, my friend and I are walking down the street talking about how excited we are to see Phish come summer, and we see all these people outside this venue, but no name on the billboard. I ask people what’s up, they say “PHISH IS PLAYING AND NOBODY KNOWS!!!!!!”, and I immediately put my finger up in the air. People all over are giving out tickets, and this one cute chick gives us two, but my friend says she doesn’t want to go. I’m bewildered for a fraction of a second, then I fly through the doors with my ticket.
An opening band made up of audience members (including the chick that gave me a ticket, who is the drummer) is all I saw play.
I don’t know why I keep having Phish dreams, but don’t ACTUALLY get to see them play.
Shit. I’m so stoked.
Thanks for the DL’s Miner!
Wow, I was just about to ask if the old mediafire links had been take down, as I’m still on my never-ending quest to catch up with all the downloads on this site. Would it be cheaper or easier for you to repost them as torrents somewhere down the line? I’ve caught on to the torrent thing, so there’s no sense (at least for me) in costing you extra cash.
Call me crazy, but I thought Destiny should have stayed in the closet.
Don’t get me wrong Pence, it would be fun to see them perform Gamehendge again. I didn’t get to see any of the GH shows myself and frankly I’d kill to have been at one. It’s just that I think the memory of it is more magical than what we would get if they played it again.
It means more to me that they do something new since we all get to have that experience for the first time together. Dragging out old-hat stuff feels like a gimmick.
Am I the only one who thinks rehashing old experiences is exactly what their live show is directly attempting to conquer?
No. I don’t want to see another Big Ball Jam or the glide pads. No, please don’t take us to the Gamehedge time factory again, or explain the story of the lizard at RR, or ride in on the hotdog or play all night… wait… maybe they should play all night… but seriously, I want to see them do something special because it’s new, not because I missed out on it when it WAS new.
Also, , many people have heard the rumor that the reason they don’t play many GH songs is Mike’s dislike for them. Seems like BS to me… I think the band just got over it and wanted to move on. ‘Mike says no’ wasn’t true at IT and I don’t think it’s true here either.
Predictions:
This summer we will get 1 Lizards, 1 Sloth, and about 4 Wilsons and 4 Bags but nothing else from GH proper.
I love the horn arrangement of Lizards from Summer ’91. Probably won’t ever see THAT again.
Totally forgot about that First Tube video…thanks for that!
But I’ll NEVER forget being at The Crest 🙂
Thanks to this site, I now have 2 Shoreline lawns! Showed up in yesterday’s mail. Still need more, and seats preferably, but I’ll take what I can get at this point. Thanks Anthony, and Thank you Mr. Miner!
OlFactory – you write as if you are inside the band’s brains with all your ‘seemingly fact based’ opinions and ‘know it all’ statements.
in actuality, your lack of experience shines through and you really have no idea what you are talking about. but to each his own!
and your summer predictions are based off of what, the past?
they rarely busted out Lizards or Sloth in the first place. strike 1. and of course Wilson and Bag could be considered regulars. strike 2.
overall – you’re not very impressive, although i know you’d like to appear as such.
strike 3 you’re OUT!
im gonna have to duck after saying this, but i’m not a big fan of forbin’s and mockingbird or the first 1/3 of lizards. i dig the significance, and appreciate the story they tell, and don’t really hate the tunes, just not my cup o tea. not to perpetuate any negativity toward gamehendge, God knows I wore out the 3-22-93 version back in the day with my buddies driving around town all stony going to pink floyd laser shows at the imax theater which I remember fondly. (i realize these are early Trey tunes written specifically for a college project at the time)
I saw a review recently in some pop culture publication, might’ve been rolling stone, i dunno, but they reviewed Time Turns Elastic (which i’m stoked to hear the album and possible phish versions – I ordered the vinyl), and said it sounded like a Disney soundtrack on shrooms, which I thought was pretty funny, but they weren’t knocking it either.
I’m still looking for two Shoreline Lawns or Seats. Would rather not get them off of this random I have lined up.
Anyone driving from RR to Shoreline?
As far as GH goes, I absolutely love it – every part. It’d be way cool if they did it, but I don’t expect them to, they’ve got plenty to rock out with.
I’d absolutely love to see Lizards and Mockingbird live though.
On a side note, how many shows have YOU been to?
Whoa Hooks Whoa.
The jamming in those songs is beautiful.
You’re joking, right?
nah those tunes are okay, just not my faves thats all
I didn’t intend for my opinions to be interpreted as facts. Predictions aren’t anything more than a feeling. Not sure why I got under your skin but sorry none the less. To each his own is right.
Mugician- I got 2 lawns for you…email me at mrminer@phishthoughts.com
All mediafire links should be back on track….
just re-read my post about forbins and mock, i don’t want to sound too opinionated or something like that, i was just trying to express my looking forward to the new, which I think I share with everyone else (and not that those songs shouldn’t be played)…
IMO Phish should also play some new covers – as I told you I’m in Phil Lesh fever at the moment – how about droppin’ a St. Steven, Help on the way, or the Eleven ?
Yes…or how about a Duprees Diamond Blues? I could live with that.
Kinda off topic here, but I just found last night a demo tape that Trey sent around to local bars to try and book gigs in 1987. While most of the tracks are just undated live performances, there is a studio version of Mike’s Groove that was apparently an outtake of Junta. Here is the link to anyone who does not have this. But beware, the torrent hasn’t finished downloading for me, it stopped at like 75%, but I’m using Transmission and I just set the priority for the last three songs (Mike’s Groove) to high, and the other songs to low. Enjoy.

i want to hear phish play “my favorite things” and hendrix’s “machine gun”
FYI the direct links never work for me. I’m on a new intel MacPro tower with latest OS. I have been using the torrents, but all the DLs freeze for me at some point and I have to cancel them out.
^God DAMN, Gus! Thanks!
