Friday Facts

Hampton (J.Volkhausen)

With a famously obsessive fan base, trivia has become part and parcel of the Phish world.  Not only are the dates of shows and versions of songs fodder for conversation, but band history, song origins, stage gear and the like also provide endless reference points in Phish culture.  Often brought up in post-show debates or on-the-road symposiums, trivial Phish knowledge is a pseudo-badge of honor in the scene.  So in honor of the community’s obsession with facts about their favorite band, I present to you twenty things you probably didn’t know (or care about) about our fearless foursome.

1. Mike’s dad, Robert Gordon, founded the Store 24 convenience store chain located on the east coast.

38012. Trey’s morning radio show in college was called Ambient Alarm Clock.

3. “YEM” is the most often played Phish song with 473 total appearances.  The next closest is “Mike’s,” almost 100 behind, at 379.

4.  Marley, Trey’s loyal dog of legend, passed away on 10.8.00, the day after Phish’s last show at Shoreline.

5. Fishman wrote the lyrics to “Gumbo.”

hot_chocolate5166. Phish has played more shows in July than any other month- 175.

7. “Foam” was orginally called “Marijuana Hot Chocolate.”

9. “Runaway Jim” has opened the most shows with 80.

10. “Funky Bitch” has been played in every year (that Phish played) since its debut in 1986.

11. Tom Marshall’s band, Amfibian, performed “Heavy Things” (before Phish) as a dark, biographical mini-rock opera.

love_goat12. Before joining Phish, Page played keyboards for “Love Goat,” an R & B band.

13.  The longest Phish jam is “Runaway Jim” from 11.29.97 at 58 minutes. (“Tweezer” from 6.14.95 comes in second.)

14. Trey decided not to play “Fluffhead” at IT, not Mike. (The famous “Mike says no.”)

15. “Rocky Top” is the most popular encore with 102 renditions.

16. “Forbin’s > Mockingbird,” “My Soul,” and “If I Could” have not been performed post-hiatus.

17. Phish played 43 shows at Nectar’s, but played 53 shows at The Front, a now defunct bar in Burlington,

phish-front-3-9-9018. Fish’s Senior Study at Goddard was called A Self-Teaching Guide to Drumming Written in Retrospect.

19. Phish has never performed in North or South Dakota. (The two states I’ve never been to. Hmmm.)

20. “Uncle Pen” is the band’s most played cover song (191.)

Thanks to The Mockingbird Foundation, ZZYZX Stats, and Relix for the help!

After receiving several setlists for the contest, we have a winner.  Nailing 11 out of 12 tracks in order, reader R1 is our Fall ’97 Mixup Champion!  Congrats, R1, your hard work paid off!  R1 will be choosing the “Downloads of the Day” for next week, and writing an accompanying paragraph for each. Second place goes to Eric R., who only missed two tracks.  Also, big ups to Mark L. who submitted his setlist on his lunch break on Monday and missed only three tracks!  Thanks to all who participated, I hope it was fun.

Check out this great article about Trey lobbying for drug courts on Capitol Hill.  The guy is amazing.

1995-11-22gnThis show is famous for the colossal 40-minute “Free” that emerged from an aborted “Rift” opener of the second set.  Known for its exploratory nature, this version is an all-time gem, and certainly remains the longest “Free” ever played. Often overlooked is the  show’s stellar first set with an “Antelope,” “Fluffhead” combo wedged in the middle.  Enjoy, and have a great weekend!

I: Cars Trucks Buses, Wilson, Run Like an Antelope, Fluffhead, Uncle Pen, Cavern, Fog That Surrounds, Lizards, Sample in a Jar, Sweet Adeline

II: Rift*, Free > Llama, Bouncing Around the Room, You Enjoy Myself, Strange Design

is 37 a cougar? sounds more like milf territory.

  2. Mr. Completely Says:

    cougars are 45+ minimum

  3. whole tour! Says:

i’ve been pounced on by a few cougars in my day.

soam is correct. they are all crazy to different degrees. they all wear a mask of sanity, it’s just a matter of time till the mask comes off and the monster is revealed.

  4. Jack O Roses Says:

That was a 4-20 show, if I remember correctly. Great room, WOW Hall. Loved seeing Trillian Green play there, too. Serious tribal madness. Gonna stop by Eugene on the way to Gorge. Can’t wait…

  5. Mr. Completely Says:

there are 2 sides to the coin

    women are crazy
    men are idiots

the biggest difference is that all men are basically idiots in the same way and for the same things, but every woman has her own kind of crazy

here in the clubhouse you can talk shit about how crazy they are but bottom line, the good ones are better than us & we are lucky that they let us touch them or have anything to do with them.

when you find one whose particular crazy is one that you can live with, keep her if you can

  6. Mr. Completely Says:

@Jack – wow – yes I was WOW Hall regular volunteer/board member etc – its my favorite small venue in the world.

I saw that whole Trillian/Hanuman scene there (and elsewhere) many times but my favorite WOW Hall shows were always Jambay and the Lazy Porch Dogs – best unknown regional band of the 90s

  7. A_Glide Says:

I like the cray ones (for a coulpe weeks)

I need a DC ticket for a friend. Can anyone hook it up?

  8. notkuroda Says:

My wife is a former deadhead who’s never seen phish. After Jerry died, she had no interest in the other ones, ratdog, phil and friends, etc. She was a Jerry fan, always preferred to hear him picking with Grisman more than anything else. She dropped out of the scene, and married a total loser. When we met, she reentered the live music scene and remarked how good it felt to be home. We’ve seen a lot of music together, and our tastes are pretty close. We’re going to the gorge for her first shows. She’s gonna love them, just doesn’t know it yet.
ps, she’s almost 40, 4 years older than me. Young chicks are great, but don’t discount older ones either!

Mr. Completely you should have your own News Paper column.”Ask Mr. Completely” Then you could really pass your wisdom on to others.

  10. Jack O Roses Says:

    @ Mr. Completely

Trillian regularly blew my mind. My favorite memory of them was at Blue Moon Stage at Faire sometime in the late 90’s. Amazing musicians.

I just missed Jambay and the Porch Dogs, though. I escaped the east coast vortex in late 1996. (I’d been planning to move out to Eug. since Autzen 1994…) Got sucked back in by my now ex-girlfriend in 2006. 😉

  11. Mr. Completely Says:

other amazing and little known Phish Phacts:

    1) in the mid 80s, before they started making big Rock Star money, Fishman worked as a blackjack dealer in Atlantic City to pay the bills

    2) Mike was the director of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” video

    3) the most-played vacuum solo sound is “bwwwuuuuuaaaaaaooooooohhhh” with 173 appearances, followed by “pfffffththhthtthtththtttttt-t-t-t-t-fffffffff” with 123

    4) Trey once performed “divided sky” on solo acoustic guitar while skydiving from the International Space Station – good recordings are hard to find though

    5) that guy in the dead show lot photo was actually wearing a “Love Goat” t-shirt

  12. SOAM Says:

No dingo balls in the Dakotas-aw maan-what about some fat dice

  13. whole tour! Says:

lol…love goat is making a serious comeback.

  14. Al Says:

SOAM- that sounds like a lot of experience…

@R1 – seems I’ve missed out the Landover on this site. Never noticed.
But I’d swap all my suggestions just for 10/18/96. The second set is a “best of” show.

  15. whole tour! Says:

the fm + aud matrix of 11.02.96 would make a nice lil download:

    yamar(set 1)
    crosseyed and painless >
    day in the life

  16. whole tour! Says:

^ best jam of 96 imho

  17. Al Says:

    good idea!

  18. old dude Says:

i hang gooballs in my rearview

  19. Mr. Completely Says:

oh yes plz, my cds of 11.02.96 suck ass – great stuff

  20. old dude Says:

i think the convo today confirms the sausagefest that is the phishthoughts discussion board. not one respectable lady in the house.

  21. snigglebeach Says:

Besides Phish, i am real disappointed with the Bonnarroo schedule.

Femi Kuti is playing opposite Phish on friday and he was prob the undercard i was most excited to see. also the one act i can not find a live recording of anywhere.

also, they are forcing us to watch Bruce Springsteen. Apologies to u Jersey folks, but i can do without that old tired act.

On the flip side, Beastie Boys into Phish…. sounds interesting.

@Mr. completely, still laughing about fun fact #3

  22. Mr. Completely Says:

@notkuroda thats a cool story – she’ll have a great time and feel the feeling she forgot

  23. Al Says:

The absolute highlight for me would be the one set opener Phish played for Santana in Hanover, Germany on 7/24/96. I saw them for the first time – never heard of them before. It got me hooked on Phish….I left after 15 min. into the Santana show.
Phish played: Chalk Dust Torture, Ya Mar, Julius, You Enjoy Myself, Golgi Apparatus
Now if that isn’t a set to get hooked – I don’t know. Unfortunately, all tapes of this opener are pretty bad….

  24. whole tour! Says:

snoop dogg and show at st. augustine crawfish boil tonight! gotta go burn a few blizzzzunts!

  25. old dude Says:

sniggle – sucks about that schedule. i highly recommend checking out Femi. his women are divine.

i recently read about a Bruce show where he took an audience request (some zz top song) – the e street had never played the song before. even if they don’t mix the setlist up like our boys, gotta love that attitude.
