Arrowhead Ranch '91

These are the shows that everyone had on analog at some point in the ’90s.  Some of most circulated tapes, these Arrowhead Ranch shows were a staple of any fan’s listening rotation at one point or another.  Smack dab in the middle of Phish’s famed Summer ’91 tour with the Giant Country Horn, these shows were an early signpost on Phish’s road to glory.  With Dave Grippo on alto sax, Russell Remington on tenor, and Carl Gerhard on trumpet, songs such as “Stash,” “Split,” Gumbo,” and “Cavern” took on new life with new arrangements.  Bringing a fusion feel to Phish’s unique form of rock and roll, the horns added an undeniable dynamic to their music and improvisation.  These two shows, the second in SBD fashion, are a hallmark of Phish history.

High Bill. Had a wicked Phish dream last night. Was at a show with a little league game being played in the venue simultaneously. Strange mix. Opened with a new song into Sand which set me off. Saw Trey at setbreak with one of his kids(I hope)inside a bag. He slapped toilet paper on my back as he was leaving and I tried to enlist Mike to get him back but he basically ignored me. Was able to go home during setbreak and my ride split without me at which point I woke up. Goddamn this summers gonna be good. Happy Mothers Day.

I read this a moment ago from the Phish Companion and laughed.

“Post-hiatus, the song has taken on a new life in the minds of many fans, one of myth and legend. 2003 was the first year when Phish was performing that “Fluffhead” was not performed in concert. Fans noticed, to say the least. While it is clear that many fans desire that t the band play “Fluffhead”, they have seemingly picked the method least likely to achieve the desired result: the chant. “Fluffhead” chants have sprung up in summer sheds and hockey rinks across America, replacing the long-standing chants of ‘destiny UNBOUND” finally satiated ON 2/28/03. Toward the end of the second day of IT on 8/3/03, the crowd engaged in a particularly spirited “Fluffhead” chant; Trey responded: “Mike says no,” before launching into “Mike’s Groove.” The discerning listener may have noticed a minor tease of the opening notes to “Fluffhead” before the 12/31/03 encore. The band is clearly aware of the fans desire for the song to be played, and seems content to build on the tension. The release will likely come someday, though given the vastness of their repertoire and never-ending thirst for a running joke fans are best advised not to hold their breath, or go hoarse from chanting.”

I saw someone asking for an explanation the other day to things you might not know. Trey actually saying no, not Mike. Cool read.
