Weekend Nuggets: Phishin’ the UK

phish-london-97In response to a UK reader request, this weekend I am featuring two gigs from England’s capitol city in 1997.  The first show, at Shepherd’s Bush Empire, was Phish’s first performance of the year, kicking off their Winter ’97 European tour.  The second evening took place at Royal Albert Hall, the classic London venue cited by The Beatles in “A Day In a Life.”  While Phish doesn’t have an extensive British catalog, these two shows are high points of their time on the isle.

I was at the Shepherd’s Bush gig….very nice!! There was a huge pub near the venue where everyone was drinking Guiness and Bass pre-show. A dude was selling acid that he had brought from the states. He had dipped the pages of a book titled, “The Wisdom of Jerry Garcia”…each page had a different erudite Jerry quote, so you just picked your favorite quote, tore a chunk from that page and then flew away…seriously….

Cool post Miner. Last year my brother and I went to London and Manchester to see My Bloody Valentine. While MBV was taking up most of my time and focus (a year later, I’m still speechless about those shows), we did drop by Albert Hall and A Day in the Life did pop into my head.

Would love to see Phish in London! Loved that town! And it was pretty dark in the daytime.

  6. El Duderino Says:

@ ColonelJoy – That sounds like a very cool story!

  7. ColonelJoy Says:

    El Dude,

I did the whole Feb 97′ Euro-Tour. The funnest tour ever. I knew then it was the time of my life. I should tell the story of how we drove after show on L from London to Brussels……..

  8. El Duderino Says:

    Hair raising I bet!

  9. Highway Bill Says:

…I did the Euro thing but not with Phish and not on L , that definetly would have taken it up a notch. I would be lying if i said I wasn’ t jealous!

  10. Highway Bill Says:

…I am still hoping for Hawaii.

  11. Eric Says:

I did the first 7 shows of that 1997 winter tour -the best adventure ever! And it only got better after Shepherd’s Bush. Thanks for uploading this show -I love your writing, Mr. Miner!

  12. Davey Says:

    Love the video.

  13. ColonelJoy Says:

We realized that if we slept that we would probably get up too late for Brussels, and since I had taken my vitamins, I was quite alert for the drive. Still, I had little experience driving on the left and all that….so, I put in a 72′ Dark Star and we rolled out of London Town….did Push Ups waiting for the ferry at dover….we didn’t get to Brussels until daylight…this was before navigation systems and all that, and I remember getting lost in some farmland. Brussels was one of the shows we didn’t have tickets for, and when we got to the venue, the dude at the ticket window said, “Sold Out, No Tickets,” but then this big promoter dude, I’ll call him the Flemish Bill Graham, came up to the window and started yelling at the ticket clerk, “They want tickets, you give them tickets!!”….that was fucking awesome. The brussels venue was tiny, way tiny, as Eric will attest….fucking awesome show, too.

    Just some sentiment:

I’ve been posting here about a month now. Usually, I don’t find much commmunity in the online community. I used to dable in other Phish forums back in the 90s, but there was always so much frequent drama…..

Anyhow, I’m enjoying everyone’s posts here. People get opionated, but I haven’t seen any silly flamethrowing sessions. Honestly, I figured I would by now. That being said, I hope folks won’t mind if I make fun of Michael Kang every few days for the rest of my life…..

  15. Highway Bill Says:

Happy in Life = Happy in Phish. And I love Phish.

  16. whole tour! Says:

this has always been a ‘flame war free zone.’

i hope col.’s friend with the jerry book is on tour this summer!

  17. wanderin Says:

    @ Colonel Joy….well said…there is a good cast of characters on this forum….humorous sessions…not too much drama….its a good forum…thanks miner

thanks for all you do over there…stay safe and get back over here to see some shows!

  18. Mr.Miner Says:

cheers all. That’s what this place is all about, intelligent, friendly discussion- no bullshit.

    Totally true Colonel 🙂

  19. whole tour! Says:

only 573 hours, 30 minutes till phish in asheville!!!!

  20. old dude Says:

Miner needs a countdown clock on the PT homepage.

btw, still planning on no spoilers? it’s the only consolation prize for those of us that have to wait for 2nd leg of tour…

  21. Mr.Miner Says:

^ still figuring that out…gonna try

  22. Mr. Icculus Says:

  23. Mr.Miner Says:

  24. Mr. Icculus Says:

Isn’t that article fucking haliraus!!! That was about 6 years ago so things aren’t as hot, and they don’t just grow on one companies property. They grow up and down the OHio valley. But it does take a very skilled eye and alot of knowledge. They arested 80 people in like 3 days its supposed to be a record in mushroom arrest.

  25. Mr. Icculus Says:
