Weekend Nuggets: Phish At Bonnaroo

Bonnaroo (M. St.Clare)

Bonnaroo (M. St.Clare)

After much debate in the Phish community as to whether or not the band should headline the biggest music festival in the country, the band killed it and we all had a blast!  Welcoming the wide open field and festival-sized open-air sound, we were once again at a Phish festival- sort of.  The only band for which Superfly turned off the all-to gaudy Bonnaroo stage sign, when Phish took the stage, the place felt like a Phish show- with more a diverse crowd.

6.12.09 (D.Vann)

6.12.09 (D.Vann)

Playing their longest set since Big Cypress, Phish closed the main stage on Friday night with a three-hour late night slot from 11 to 2 am.  Taking one day off, the band closed the festival with an outright two-set Phish show from 8-12 am on Sunday night.  The band did a little bit of everything over these three sets, played to over 70,000 people.  This weekend was certainly one of the high points of June’s tour.

Follwing the recent pattern of brutally sub-par-LivePhish soundboards, (more on that another day), the SBD releases of Bonnaroo don’t come close to conveying the size of the music.  The “Tweezer” doesn’t crunch, the sound is flat.  Audience tapes are the only recordings that give bring this festival-sized show to life.  In short, if you download any AUDs, download these!  (Note: The “Rock and Roll > Light > 46 Days” is a can’t miss highlight, taboot).

  1. Frankenstein Says:

I’m thinking it’s gonna be Vegas, with management links between Phish and Superfly, responsible for Bonnaroo and the now defunct Vegoose. Just a thought…

  2. freshtracks420 Says:

Howdy…looks like I might be the 1st poster at this late hour!?! Well if the rumor is true that the Halloween festival is going to happen in deep SoCal, then that would be too sweet for us far-flung west coast phishheads…and make more sense as to the short foray through Shoreline this August. Anyway, really hope that it’s true…3 day fest in the west…HOORAY…keepin’ my fingers crossed!!

  3. red Says:

I suppose there will be more dates to come… memphis, anyone? Pyramid 99! also thinking about pelham from the night before – Whew!

  4. davey Says:

I can’t wait to visit Cali for the firs time in my life. If anything would bring me there, a 3 Day Phish Halloween Festival would do it. I heard rumors that it will be 8 sets, 2 Friday and 3 the rest. I wonder how much this bad boy will cost us.

  5. suMMer Tour 2009 Says:

I’m missing antelope through glory days from the torrent download today. Anyone else experiencing this?

  6. BingosBrother Says:

Did any of our boys ever sit in with anyone elses band at Bonnaroo?

  7. sumodie Says:

“Rock and Roll > Light > 46 Days”
We’re in complete agreement, Miner. From 30ft. away in the pit that night, this was far and away my musical highlight from Phish at Roo (the Boss was another peak, just not a pure phishy one).

I also just listened to again yesterday and it holds up. I haven’t assiduously listened to the whole tour yet, but I wonder if this isn’t the best, most seamless jamming involving a new tune from the whole tour.

@BingosBrother: Fishman wore a suit (I heard) and sat in with the Del McCoury Band I believe.

  8. parrott56 Says:

Wait. Wait wait wait. I realize there are rumors swirling of the Coachella site, but the graphic on phish.com would suggest events in WEST VIRGINIA, IDAHO, and OKLAHOMA. Could that possibly be true? Selfishly, I hope so. I would be able to see a show in WV. I wouldn’t be able to see a show out west.

  9. Mr.Miner Says:

there are three folder in that torrent…are you sure those are missing? Pretty sure those files are part of folder labeled “Part II”…please confirm

  10. smegma Says:

Hi all. been keeping up with this site for a long time now but this is my first post. I’m taking a guess here, but it looks to me that they are going to gradually gray out states on the halloween graphic until one state is left. If you roll your mouse over the states all of them move except the gray ones. Also, i’m really looking forward to the late night bonnaroo download since i haven’t heard the end of it yet because it was cut off on the no spoilers (no offense to miner, following the tour virtually through no spoilers has been an amazing experience)

  11. BAND Says:

Indo raises some concerns. Coachella has strict time limits on how long the music can be played at night. Curfew is midnight. That would take away from the experience if this is the case for Phish, especially on halloween night. The Cure had the PA plug pulled on them while playing Sunday night at Coachella 2009. Paul Mcartney was allowed to play past the curfew and was fined for every minute he played over. The Coachella festival is not a camping festival either. Not sure what the average temps are in Indo around halloween and if its conducive to camping, or even if its allowed. Camping adds to the experience as well as makes it economical for us fans that cant afford a 3 night hotel stay. It would be fun to be there for the weekend, but logistical issues are of concern.

  12. ColonelJoy Says:

While I’m certainly no stringcheese fan, I love the expression Kangfirmed, and that is pretty much what Halloween at Coachella is at this point!!

I already made reservations at a Best Western in Indio….

    The Colonel is coming back!!

  13. Mr.Miner Says:

Yes Colonel!! Will see you there…planning on bringing turntables for after shows throwdowns…should be a great 3-day party in the desert in the most beautiful time of year there!! Might as well stop speculating- the festi is in Indio…

  14. Mr.Miner Says:

Missing tracks- “Antelope” through “Glory Days” added in extra torrent file. My apologies.

  15. ColonelJoy Says:

It gets dark a 5 that time of year, so no issues with curfew, as they can start early. Average temps are in the mid 80s that time of year…will be cool at night, but not cold…perfect.

tour-rats (not suggesting you are one), can make that economical…I think there will be some camping too….

  16. Mr.Miner Says:

def will be camping….I am upping a new torrent file with the complete 6.14 show…..

  17. ColonelJoy Says:

Thanks, Miner!! I look forward to meeting you, kind brother!!

You don’t know how stoked I am am….well, on second thought…I suppose you all do!!

  18. Mr.Miner Says:

“ll your mouse over the states all of them move except the gray ones. Also, i’m really looking forward to the late night bonnaroo download since i haven’t heard the end of it yet because it was cut off on the no spoilers”

^^ The music was actually all there, the ID tag was messed up through, so it didn’t appear so”

  19. Pence Says:

yeah there has to be some dates leading up to the fest. Fall tour 09′ sick sick sick. As long as phish comes to chicago in the winter, I wont mind living here anymore.

  20. smegma Says:

thanks miner. guess i had it all along. well gives me something new to listen to now any way.

@colonel- i was psyched for you when i saw the announcement. you’ve been talking about the halloween show for a long time now.

see everyone at merriweather! anyone know a good campground nearby?

  21. shpongleyez Says:

    ever so slightly off topic:

as a big Gin fan, any recommendations on the best one of the tour?

  22. Mr.Miner Says:

6.14 torrent file has been fixed. It now contains the whole show.

Gin- all pretty much in the box- check out Bonnaroo Gin- maybe the best one

  23. Frondoot Says:

happy for everyone that could go, but sad as i almost positively wont be able to make it. being in school in philly at the time i dont know how i would even go about getting to socal, plus the money issue bla bla bla

and an update for those of you who put alot of time into your suggestions the other other day:

Miles Davis- “In a Silent Way”…first one i downloaded, completely great, loved it the first time through

Miles Davis- “Live Evil”…something totally different to my ears and not what i expected. thats not to say i didnt enjoy it, i did very much and have been through it twice so far. this one will take even a few more listens for me to completely digest

Coltrane- “A Love Supreme”…this was the last one i got to yesterday and by far my favorite. need a few more listens but i was really digging this one yesterday

  24. Mr.Miner Says:

Lets have a couple folks hop on the new 6.14 torrent to get in moving! Thanks 🙂 Remember- keep your torrent window open to seed when you are done!

  25. Robear Says:

Yes! What a way to wake up! A 3-day festival in California, after the harvest! So grateful, after just one show scheduled for the summer in Cali. West Coast Phish heads, let’s help make this a great event! Mr. Miner, I love your site. Let’s hook up while you’re out here!
