Weekend Nuggets: Phish At Bonnaroo

Bonnaroo (M. St.Clare)

Bonnaroo (M. St.Clare)

After much debate in the Phish community as to whether or not the band should headline the biggest music festival in the country, the band killed it and we all had a blast!  Welcoming the wide open field and festival-sized open-air sound, we were once again at a Phish festival- sort of.  The only band for which Superfly turned off the all-to gaudy Bonnaroo stage sign, when Phish took the stage, the place felt like a Phish show- with more a diverse crowd.

6.12.09 (D.Vann)

Playing their longest set since Big Cypress, Phish closed the main stage on Friday night with a three-hour late night slot from 11 to 2 am.  Taking one day off, the band closed the festival with an outright two-set Phish show from 8-12 am on Sunday night.  The band did a little bit of everything over these three sets, played to over 70,000 people.  This weekend was certainly one of the high points of June’s tour.

Follwing the recent pattern of brutally sub-par-LivePhish soundboards, (more on that another day), the SBD releases of Bonnaroo don’t come close to conveying the size of the music.  The “Tweezer” doesn’t crunch, the sound is flat.  Audience tapes are the only recordings that give bring this festival-sized show to life.  In short, if you download any AUDs, download these!  (Note: The “Rock and Roll > Light > 46 Days” is a can’t miss highlight, taboot).

now kicking myself for booking my late october vacation last fall…then paid for it. Damn would love to head west for this fall festi.

@red…I didn’t make it to the 99 memphis show, but good call on Oak Mtn. that was a FUN show, well-played, GREAT setlist. the previous show in NOLA was really nice as well…Michael Ray and Tim Green (I think) came out for the last few of the 1st set – it was one of those REALLY GOOD guest sit-ins.

And thanks to everyone’s jazz recs…I had a few already, but not Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, so I picked it up on my way home yesterday. Was a good listen last night after a late italian dinner with lots o’ pane e vino. I’ve already updated my amazon cart with some of the others.

@Colonel…congrats on your return in time for the festi, just stay safe between now and then…and thanks bro.

Maybe an october run into ‘ween, then another late nov>NYE…would like a NYC run somewhere in there.

The free audience shows downloaded from phishows.com (Jones, Camden, Bonnaroo 2, Burgess) sound as good or better than the FLAC of Deer Creek from Livephish. What gives? Audience shows are better than ever with the latest equipment, is one guess. The other is, Livephish needs to improve the sound of the downloads before releasing them.

  3. Mugician Says:

That background jam on the savethedate page sounds really familiar… anybody?

If it’s in Cal, there’s no way I’m missing this. Ever since I saw the IT DVD, I’ve wanted to go to a Phestival, and ever since I saw a youtube of Run Like an Antelope from 10/31/94, I’ve wanted to see a Halloween show.

Life is fucking great with Phish around.

  6. shpongleyez Says:

Anyone know of a crispy Bonnaroo “From the Archives”? I have a copy that sounds like it was ripped from the online broadcast, which = craptacular.

@smegma and others going to Merriweather PP:

First off, I highly recommend either getting into the lots SUPER early, or, parking at the mall or on the surrounding streets (which is what I would do). MPP had horrific traffic jams when I was there in ’98 (the sabotage show) -I parked at the mall and had no trouble but my friends missed the entire first set stuff in traffic for the lots.

I don’t have close by camping ideas but if you’re heading up to SPAC after MPP then I suggest driving into the night a while before pulling over. After this past Camden show I stayed at Timberline Campground in Clarksboro NJ -very close to I-295 -wouldn’t be that far from MPP if you’re going to SPAC.

I’m not an audiofile but at bt.etree.org I downloaded flac copies from a taper named ‘bhadella1’ based on someone else’s recommendation.

Click on ‘Phish’, search for Bonnaroo, and on the right side you will see the a listing of tapers who recorded each AUD.

listening to trey shred on #line at the creek….getting really good vibes from this tune. my 1.5 year old is groovin…amazing day in SF, brews & bocci in the park.

colonel-if anyone deserves a show it is you, get home safe and the boys will take care of the rest.

  15. sumodie Says:

Yo Halloween commenters: While I think it would be cool if states began to disappear from the phish.com announcement, I think those 3 black states are just there to make a jack o lantern face.

From what I understand there is camping allowed at the two festies that currently take place at the polo grounds in Indio (Coachella & Stagecoach). Like they’d want ALL of us crazies running rampant in the area -I’ll be camping for sure.

  16. ColonelJoy Says:

Yes, I pretty much had Halloween pegged as my first opportunity. This is beyond anything I could have asked for. Halloween is happening and that is amazing. I have to balance Phish and Family, so getting essentialy 4 shows in 3 days (if they do 2-3-3 for sets), is quite economical for me.

  21. red Says:

I ran km184>dmic20 (48k) from austin through Minneapolis in fall 99. not the perfect rig for every venue, but I got some nice pulls. lots of other great sources out there so I never really spread them, especially since my P1 died about that time. I still spin those dats on my sony home deck from time to time.

wish I was back on the tour but very happy witha degree, real job real family, etc.

My most sincere thanks and love to the the tapers and those like miner who spread the music.

Oh, and Del McCoury is playin my hometown tonite – I’m stoked! Wish I had a recorder and my t-bar – the neumanns would be up!

  22. ThePigSong Says:

  25. wothlesswampyfool Says:
