Weekend Nuggets: SoCal ’96

phish-pauley-pavillion-96DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

Phish concluded Fall ’96 with a famed run down the west coast.  Ending in Las Vegas on December 6th, these two shows came directly before- with a stop in Phoenix in between them.  Both shows illustrate the band’s developing sound, as they finished the tour with far more musical direction than when it began.  Converging in more groove-oriented playing, the transition to funk was underway.  The LA “Tweezer” and San Diego “Mike’s” stand head and shoulders above the rest of their respective shows.  Enjoy the weekend.

ahhh. Ann Arbor! That is sick…An analog classic…super improvisational….would need to relisten to give you real thoughts

  3. Robear Says:

thanks. I really respect your opinion. I was lucky enough to be about 12 rows back, center. It was awesome. I kept waiting for the weekapaug to come….. I really started thinking of the good Mike’s I had seen after reading your article. So, is it possible to get decent recordings of those older shows? I used to have DATS of that show, as well as 11/14, grand rapids, and 11/18 east lansing from an old taper friend, Scotty from InFlight, rest his soul.

  4. EL Duderino Says:

Robear Check bt.etree.org this is the site to download all Phish, Trey etc. bit torrenting they call it if you don’t know already. Welcome and enjoy. Usually what happens @ bt.etree.org is all shows eventually come around so go there every day and you’ll see a few new ones. Hope on the bus and enjoy the ride 😉

  5. EL Duderino Says:

Here is what they’re saying over @ LL.
Here is the latest rumor from another fairly spot-on contact:

Here’s the deal: Phish WAS scheduled to play at the Polo Grounds in
Indio, where they host Coachella. There was some minor issues with the
alcohol restrictions, etc at the event grounds, but that was being
handled in the rider of the contract along with the confidentiality
agreement about the announcement of the album they are covering, due
to some superfluous stage setup stuff they wanted for their “musical
    costume” (from the contract).

Phish is/was planning to cover Guns n’ Roses “Appetite For
Destruction” and had even gotten Axl Rose to agree to make an
appearance (Coachella is close to Axl’s home in L.A) and to share the
stage with Phish on at least one of the tracks. However, Axl got upset
and cancelled his appearance with Phish (for unconfirmed reasons). Trey got upset with Axl and Axl then reacted by threatening legal recourse if Phish covered his album (similar to the way Zappa had “Peaches” copyrighted and disallowed it from being covered without a fee being charged – that was in the 80’s and was one track, you can imagine the cost of GnR’s copyright status especially considering the whole leaked copy of their new album).

Trey and the band then decided that due to the hang-up with the
alcohol situation, which had not been completely resolved – they were
still hammering out the specific language in the contract rider – and
the fact that Axl was threatening to sue (Axl has a pretty good
relationship at this point with a music lawyer, he just wrapped a
lawsuit for the leaked copy of “Chinese Democracy”, that they would
switch the location of the festival to Big Cypress, where as an Indian
Reservation, typical US laws (including copyright
infringement/intellectual property laws) do NOT apply, or are a grey
    area at best.

So, the initial word was correct, Phish DID have a contract to play at
the Coachella site, but the legal language in the contract rider was
never finalized and the contract was therefore voided. So, Phish is
now booked to play at Big Cypress for the Save the Date Festival.
Seriously, I was shown the contract for this event. And while this
location may fall through as well, Phish has played there before
making it much easier to finalize the negotiations. Take it for what
you will, but Phish is playing Big Cypress for this festival.”

If you all believe this shit…Well I got this bridge to sell you!!! 🙂

  6. whole tour! Says:

    heLLo feLLow LLegger!

  7. Robear Says:

thx el duderino. I am pretty green when it comes to torrents. I have a MAC. Do I need software to use the ‘bt.etree’ site?

  8. Mr.Miner Says:

    ^ I’ll post Ann Arbor on Monday…

  9. whole tour! Says:

    pick up ‘utorrent’

  10. Mr.Miner Says:

  11. EL Duderino Says:

You need a bit torrent client. This is a program that allows you to download the files. Then.. you need to convert the files, which are either shn files or flac files, to wav files to burn them to CD. Once they are converted to wav files you can burn them to disc via your favorite cd burning program. I’m a Mac user as well. I use Vuse/Azerus for my downloading program. xACT for my program to convert the files from shn/flac to wav. format for burning to cd. this will be all you need Robear. Enjoy. There is an even bigger Grateful Dead catalog as well for your enjoyment. Endless music if your a serious ollector. 🙂

  12. Mr.Miner Says:

I’ve not been able to get utorrent to work with my MAC, fwiw….any help? Been forced to use Vuze- a much bulkier program

  13. uncle matty Says:

does that 18 wheeler on the save-the-date map remind anyone of ‘spyhunter’ ?

  14. EL Duderino Says:

@ Mr. Miner LL = Lossless Legs. All people, you should know this. 🙂 More of a Dead site than a Phish site like bt.etree.org Still Miner, you should be a member of LL and Workingman’s Tracker. You Are Are kind of people. Smart, Articulate and Kind!

  15. EL Duderino Says:

I use Vuse/Azerus as well. Yes it is very bulky!

  16. Themanatee Says:

I have three extra Friday night tickets for the gorge . 60 for each.

  17. EL Duderino Says:

Where were you two months ago! I spent 145.00$ @ Ticketsnow. I will never fall for the ticket hype again for this band. If it’s show that’s that hard to get into, I just won’t go. I threw an Alpine on the ground and I have two toyota Park tickets that I’m gonna eat as well

  18. Robear Says:

thx everyone!!!! I could not get uTorrent to work on my Mac. I will download Azerus. I scanned some of the pages on bt.etree.org. wow, I guess it’s time for another external hard drive : ) I saw 8-11-93 Grand Rapids, which was my first show. Very exciting. A soundboard / matrix of 12/29/98 is up there as well. Didn’t even check the dead yet. Kid in a candy store. I’ve been in the mountains of NorCal too long I guess!

Miner, thx. for the AA post in advance!!

  19. BrandonKayda Says:

    Hey Miner,

I know this is really un-related, but I recently bought Paul McCartney tickets for the Fedex Field show on StubHub, and when I got the confirmation email it said that the seller didn’t have the tickets yet. Is that normal? The show is in 2 weeks, and I just want to make sure that the tickets come in on time. Sorry for asking you, but I thought I remembered you saying that you knew someone who was high up on StubHub, so I figured you might know what I should do.

Thanks man. This Gin is incredible by the way, nice choice!

  20. Prince Nabby Says:

OK, Miner, you have me (more or less) convinced. If the phish.com flash is now scooping up topsoil from dead states and bringing others back to life, then I am convinced that Indio is still a very real possibility. I’m glad I did not cancel my room in Palm Springs 🙂

PS: Would love you to do a blog entry on Phish stage banter and/or antics with props

  21. george de la porge Says:

hey miner, thanks for the bathtub, it was from my third show and is a personal favorite of mine. but where is the rest of it? it should be over 20 minutes long! that was a great show. i cant believe they played three nights in chicago, and then one in madison. it was a chicago phan’s dream! do you wanna share the whole show some time?

  22. bearito Says:

I’m a mac user as well and utorrent wont work without the OS X 10.5 software, which I haven’t felt like buying just yet.

  23. bearito Says:

@ george – it was over 20 min

  24. Mr.Miner Says:

“but where is the rest of it”
    ^ what do u mean?

  25. Mr.Miner Says:

the entire three night stand is posted as a weekend nuggets here:

Remember, if you want a show, it is very likely it is on the site. You can use the search window to search for dates and venues.

(PS. If anyone has a somewhat complete list out there, I want to put together a page of all the shows on the site…never managed to get that going….there are SOO many)…
