The Gorge 8.8.09 (W.Rogell)

The Gorge 8.8.09 (W.Rogell)

Here we have Saturday night’s Gorge show, an affair that showcased Phish’s more rock-based jamming.  The clear high point of the night was the monster “Rock and Roll” that opened the second set, which remained a summer highlight.  A centerpiece “YEM” anchored the middle of the set in laid-back style, while a growing “Number Line” got into some significant late-set  improv, segueing into “Piper,” whose fast-paced jam closed the thematic set.

The first set featured an opening bust-out of “Mango Song,” included  a completely original take on “Tweezer” and made engaging runs through “Wolfman’s” and “Antelope,” with the latter standing out as a weekend highlight.  Definitely a show that delivered high-octane psychedelia- and several standout moments- this capped band’s first west coast run since 2003.  Enjoy the weekend folks!

    RR stash is amazing.
Huge feedback psyche jam in the middle segueing nicely back into the main theme.
Trey wailed over the main melody for a few minutes longe than I expected.
    Mike was killin it.
This is 1st song when I knew 2nd leg would have a different vibe than 1st

It’s all a matter of opinion! subjective to the listener. Too me Gorge 2 is it but out of the 5 shows I saw this summer Gorge 1 is second. Who cares really!!!! ha ha beat me to the punch, dont i feel silly.

  8. Lycanthropist Says:

the RR Stash was definitely a turning point. It was the proof in the pudding that the Whale had been finally used tastefully and successfully, that the band was willing to open up again, and that it was gonna be breaking NEW ground, not just surfing old turf.

Its beautiful midsection, its amazing return to the theme, and wonderful climax. Definitely the first taste of what 3.0 Phish can achieve.

    Miner and Completely
You are correct on your Fluffhead assesment.
I have seen enough to know that the live experience easilly glosses over the mistakes from the Gorge.
The live exerience is all that matters. When listenening to shows you don’t attend that needs to be taken into account.
What kind of energy that specific song provokes in a live setting.
If I was there I would have loved it.
It’s not as if it fell part, minor errors.
The Stash we can just disagree on and the Taste I guess just hoping for alittle more from that one.

had beers + og kush on my deck last night and had friends over that i haven’t seen in a while cuz of tour. What did i put on for our music. Gorge 1. worked quite well. wow that was a drifty psychedelic show.

  20. butter Says:

the gorge stash touched on dark psychedelia , the RR butter b’day stash was psychedelic as FUCK!!!

  21. MOonSHaKE Says:

man I’m so disappointed Phish didn’t bust out “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It’ on this tour… 🙁

  22. butter Says:

@AW – its an interesting phenomenon in the way folks will go to great lengths to defend a show they were at. I find myself doing it all the time. My wife is a pickier phan than me, and it drives me bonkers.

A good comparison is when one talks shit about a golfers home course.
A good comeback I’ve come up with is this: “I didn’t fuck your wife, I just don’t like your golf course.”

and i think you are right on, AW- that RR 1 was played more to the venue like the Gorge. Thanks for pointing that out. 4 night runs are something to behold. I think i’m just starting to digest some of what just went down.

  23. MOonSHaKE Says:

RE: My wife is a pickier phan than me.

butter: interesting… tell me a story about when you really liked a particular show/jam but your wife did not, why it drove you bonkers, and what was her reason (or reasons) for not liking it.

I’m married as well so differences in likes/dislikes especially when it comes to music in a relationship… well, it’s an interesting topic… would like to hear more…

  24. MOonSHaKE Says:

oh… and i was j/k about the Will Smith bust out. Phish actually played that @ Hampton I think in 1998.

  25. Mr.Miner Says:

tapes are for memories- if you loved it when you were there- it was great….
