The Gorge 8.8.09 (W.Rogell)

The Gorge 8.8.09 (W.Rogell)

Here we have Saturday night’s Gorge show, an affair that showcased Phish’s more rock-based jamming.  The clear high point of the night was the monster “Rock and Roll” that opened the second set, which remained a summer highlight.  A centerpiece “YEM” anchored the middle of the set in laid-back style, while a growing “Number Line” got into some significant late-set  improv, segueing into “Piper,” whose fast-paced jam closed the thematic set.

The first set featured an opening bust-out of “Mango Song,” included  a completely original take on “Tweezer” and made engaging runs through “Wolfman’s” and “Antelope,” with the latter standing out as a weekend highlight.  Definitely a show that delivered high-octane psychedelia- and several standout moments- this capped band’s first west coast run since 2003.  Enjoy the weekend folks!

I. The Mango Song, Chalkdust Torture, Middle of the Road, Tweezer > Driver, Twenty Years Later, Yamar, It’s Ice, Wolfman’s Brother, Character Zero, Run Like An Antelope

OK Scott Bacula, LOL!!!! Ziggy says you have to make Phish Heads more cutious to others!!!!!

  2. BrandonKayda Says:

Hey guys! How have you been? Last night was great.

Robear – I’ll get to work on your discs now. I do have Tony Rice Unit (that Completely mentioned) if you want it.

  3. Lycanthropist Says:

    lol at Scott Bacula reference.

  4. albert walker Says:

As Usual Mr. Completely it seems we were arguing the same points, from a different perspective, meeting in the middle.

Too bad Tube is tour downer. I would put Free on this list also.
Tube needs a 2nd set placement that really gets going, although I agree RR had some real tasty bars.
Free is always in the 2nd set and it seems to just want to finish. The Free at RR was the low point in a very hot set, too bad.

Listened to the Gorge again while running this morning.
    A beautiful show.
I know Possums, been beaten to death this tour but what a version.
They need to keep laying the outro jam in DWD, also love it.
Love the way Ocelot sounded at the Gorge, really gaining confidenace on this once as a song, but I still think the jam is finding a path.
Spinning Hartford for the first time this afternoon.

I think Antelope has yet to reach a real hot version.
I have not heard them all though.
Think RR went some real interesting places with a nice psyche jam in the middle, but it kind of got lost towards the end.
Gorge was nice and tight, but fairly controlled compared to hot Antelopes of past.
though Camden Antelope was one of the nicest 1st leg jams, but probably won’t stand up to 2nd leg.
Maybe Darien is the one, still need to check out that one.

“Free is always in the 2nd set and it seems to just want to finish.” <— wow that really nails it.

don't play it if you don't feel it, right?

Gorge Antelope is just starting to get back to where that song needs to be. Darien is crazier if I remember right but I've only listened once. While these versions are getting there, agree there's a way to go. Same with the Splits. Or Split. really just one this leg?

@lycan – I don't think so, but clearly we've jumped the shark on off-topic-ness for a Sunday morning

  7. Mr. Completely Says:

if a bunch of duplicates show up, sorry. weirdness this AM

  8. Mr. Completely Says:

@albert – ‘Free is always in the 2nd set and it seems to just want to finish.’ <— wow that really nails it. Getting it over with. That song used to be really fun.

don't play it if you don't feel it, right?

After giving both 8/7 and 8/8 another re-listen this weekend, I think it’s got to be 8/7 in a photo finish.

  10. albert walker Says:

It’s great to be ranking in terms of Great, Greater, and Greatest
    all varying degrees of tastiness
that’s what I love about west coast 2009, no real low points, all fire

  11. Lycanthropist Says:

    nicely stated albert

  12. EL Duderino Says:

Tubes have been a let down ‘cuz they’re so damn short again like they were back in the day (MY Youth).

  13. Lycanthropist Says:

seems like everyone needs a BIG tube.

    I could use one myself.

That funk groove is just to tasty to be so short

  14. Robear Says:

Listening to some “Chance Fisher” from 8/8/09, over morning coffee. So far, so good, two thumbs up! (my gf and I).

I want to put in a plug for the SPAC ‘Antelope. I loved the RR version, felt like some new life was being injected into the old classic. I really loved the Darien version, there’s something about a mid-set Antelope that just shines.

For some reason though, the SPAC version hit the high gear of my soul. I posted earlier, I could not stop giggling or wipe the shit eatin’ grin off my face for like 10 minutes. Could barely function at the WW booth, and I don’t get loopy at shows. Just loved it!

I agree with mr. walker, no real low points out west.

People need to stop calling out ‘Tube’ at every show. The version at MPP was the bands way of saying “We’ll pick the songs, or you’ll get this”

  15. EL Duderino Says:

agreed Robear! Trey is getting annoyed with the request bull-shit

  16. Robear Says:

I can chime in on some good underground / concious Hip-Hop.

    I recommend:

    Aesop Rock : Labor Days
Talib Kweli : Beautiful Struggle, or anything of his, including his album ‘Black Star’ with Mos Def
Immortal Technique : Revolutionary Vol II
    Nappy Roots : Wooden Leather
    Atmosphere : All pretty good

  17. Lycanthropist Says:

    @ Robear –

    Thanks for the kind words.

Also agree that SPAC antelope is pretty fiery!

And requests seem kind of counterproductive to the nature of Phish.

I would much rather them play what they are feeling, than any particular song I may want to hear. In fact, requests in general drive me crazy.
We (my band) very rarely play requests, because then it brings us out of the moment and into our own heads. They can be a real speedbump in an otherwise good show.

Now occasionally there will be a request that is just too sweet to turn down and I am sure Phish feels the same way. But in general, lets just let the band do what they do.

  18. Lycanthropist Says:

will second all of Robear’s hip hop picks

  19. Phish...Yup Says:

I’m feeling a huge Tube at Indio. Speaking of shit eating grins Robear, the fact that 7 sets and an album cover of halloween phish awaits puts one right on my face

  20. Robear Says:

Lycan, apples are just getting ripe out here, almost Apple Pie time! I suggest you send an email to the folks at passionpresents dot com.

Matty and Steve have connections all over the country for music promotion. They are promoters out here in Humboldt, but are well traveled.

  21. Lycanthropist Says:

i tried that once, I guess I will just have to try them again Robear

  22. Robear Says:

Matty’s been on tour with Phish, I’ll remind him to respond when i see him. He’s an unbelievably busy guy, and summer is down time for Passion Presents. Their next big show is ‘Ween’ in Eureka at the end of this month. Glad you tried!

  23. Robear Says:

lycan, does your band or do you dig ‘Cake’? I am hearing different influences in your music, very creative and diverse. John, the singer / songwriter is a friend of mine. Thought I heard a bit of his humour in ‘Ride a horse..’

  24. spike2518 Says:

I want FALL TOUR?????? ANYONE KNOW WHATS UP???
