Overshadowed by Hartford and SPAC, the opening show of the summer’s final four-night run flowed well, had copious highlights, and set the tone for the end of tour.  The first set under the tent featured the darker bustouts of “Dinner and a Movie” and “My Friend” while carrying one of the outstanding “Wolfman’s” of summer and, in my opinion, the most engaging “Bowie” of the second leg.  The second set opened with a exploratory “Drowned,” sparking the unique highlight of “Drowned > Caspian > Rift.”  A smoking mid-set “Antelope” set up a revelatory “Fluffhead” closer.  This show is a real dark-horse, and deserves more attention than it has garnered.

I: Sample In A Jar, Dinner and a Movie, Wolfman’s Brother, My Friend, My Friend, Possum, Farmhouse, Sugar Shack, Brian And Robert, David Bowie, Bathtub Gin, How High The Moon, Golgi Apparatus

II: Drowned > Prince Caspian > Rift, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, Sparkle, Run Like An Antelope, Suzy Greenberg, Fluffhead

E: Joy, First Tube

Jam of the Weekend:

Drowned > Caspian > Rift” 8.13.II

Phish cohesively strung together this unique run of songs to begin the second set at Darien.  Look out for the standout “Drowned” jam- totally patient and fully realized.

@ Brandon – which “version” of 2.28.03 do you have? The livephish website download (flacs or mp3s?) or the official CD release? I’m tempted to get the d/l but want to know:

    1) Does the d/l flac show currently on livephish have the same remastering as the cd release?

    2) What is the overall sbd quality for that run in 03? I have the 7.12 and 7.13 gorge shows and wasn’t super impressed with the sound.

Hope everyone is having a good night!

  3. flarrdogg Says:

the cd release of 2/28/03 is amazing. 10 out of 10.

  4. JP Says:

flarrdogg – do you know if the flacs on livephish have the same mastering as the cd release? Thanks.

  5. Lycanthropist Says:

who’s still awake on this board?

  6. mutt Says:

would you beleive my sister, who hasn’t seen phish in ten years wanted to ” hear a bunch of rift and junta” at this show..amazing. I if I was in a phantasy pool this night, I very well may have won!!

  7. Leo Weaver Says:

thanks Sumodie…’preciate it. BTW, I’d catch that WSP/ABB show. Not sure which has the “lead” slot tonight, but regardless should be a good show. I mean, you can’t really go wrong with the Bros…and from what I’ve heard, WSP with Jimmy Herring has been very good as of late. I haven’t seen ’em since Houser was still around. They’re playing here in charlotte in about a month, but I’ll be out of town so can’t make it…otherwise I’d be there.

  8. fat bastard Says:

sumodie i saw WSP in louisville 6 weeks ago and they were awesome. the bands are really close friends and you can tell, you’ve got all kinds of sit ins throughout the night. check it out

I have an AUD I believe. I just got it off of bt.etree

  10. flarrdogg Says:

jp- not sure about the flacs. sorry. probably the same?

  11. Mr. Completely Says:

so i just listened to RR Split with a really serious buzz and at full volume for the first time. it ate my brain. phish should play like that a whole lot more.

knowing that the end was perhaps cut short by the weather helps put it in proper frame. the end doesn’t matter tho. that’s the shit right there. give me more of that please.

  12. Lycanthropist Says:

    @ Mr. C –

Yes that Split got me so amped.
I was like, “Yes! They finally can play this song again!” and then they didn’t play it again for the rest of the tour. Ha. Oh well. That is the kind of down and dirty Phish that I love.

BTW, did you check out the new blog?

  13. JP Says:

Totally agree on the Split from RR – was really hoping for a reprise at the gorge, but they always keep you guessing.

“down and dirty” and “give me more of that please” – 100% agree.

  14. JP Says:

watched set 2 day 1 from the Clifford Ball dvd yesterday – interesting set. Opened with Split (awesome, but I would take RR!). The Free jam was very different (for me) – Mike not really taking the lead, Page driven, Trey even playing a small set of drums near him? Different – sounded pretty good to me though, maybe just cause it was so different. Mid section of way mellow songs with a different band configuration – circular and close together. Good Mikes.

the playing overall is great, and it’s fun to see it all up close and personal. 1st night had a great sunset, was fun seeing the viiew the band sees too. Watching Page is the biggest treat as i’ve never been able to see his hands overly clearly at a show.

Another interesting note – their configuration in 1996 matches 2009, Page and Fish on the wings, etc. What year did that set-up change and had they changed this set-up previously?

  15. JP Says:

could I say “different” anymore? sorry… focused on the ‘variances’ i guess – ha.

  16. JP Says:

Listened to this on ipod yesterday – i know it won’t appeal to everyone, but i think well-done. anyway, check out:

  17. whole tour! Says:

    set up changed in 99
trey and mike switched spots, fish in back

    changed again in 03
mike and trey switch places, page facing crowd

and back to pre 99 set up in 09

  18. Mdawg Says:

    @ Mr. C

That SOAMelt at RR was da bomb. I remember sitting there in the rain watching the four of them getting pretty soaked but still throwing down some sick stuff. That moment is when i realized that set II was about to get real rowdy!!

  19. voopa Says:

Ugh, Trey on his own drums…talk about jams that went nowhere. As soon as he picked up those sticks I went somewhere…piss break.

  20. JP Says:

Trey looked pretty silly on the mini-drums. Page really led this free jam, and he sounded good i thought.

  21. JP Says:

wt! – thanks for the breakdown on set up.

  22. JP Says:

    Anyone ever heard this?

^^ exactly….this is what I’ve been saying. I am not sure how much this was cut off to be honest.
