Weekend Nuggets: Two Nights In Europe

Europe '97 Summer Tour T-Shirt

This weekend, I am featuring two shows from the game-changing tour of Europe Summer ’97.  Fully realizing their transformation to groove, Phish explored slow, funky realms throughout the beginning of summer. Warming up to the point of sizzling over the course of a 19 show European tour, Phish then turned their attention stateside for one of the most beloved summer runs.  Starting in Virgina Beach and ending in Limestone, Summer ’97 was a special era of Phish.  But the excellence we witnessed throughout the U.S. had its foundation in Phish’s European vacations in winter and summer.  These two nights represent explorations of the new style, with funk galore and a whole lot more.  These Europe ’97 shows are very underexposed, in general, containing many a night glossed over.  These are two of those nights.

Let the european grooves flows and come back here !

  2. EL Duderino Says:

    Good Morning all!

Just had some estimates for a moving co. to move our asses down to Raleigh from Chicago. Not Cheap!!!!!

  3. fat bastard Says:

dude, miner brings it every day. he’s like Cal Ripken!

  4. halcyon Says:

Morning Everybody. Thanks for putting up the Tower Jam video. I haven’t found a decent copy of that, and have been wanting to see a decent video of it for quite some time.

  5. MOONSHAKE Says:

I was at the two shows in Amsterdam and it was an experience I’ll never ever want to forget. I met Trey three times during that trip (once in the Dutch Flowers coffeeshop, once more in the Grey Area coffeeshop, and finally outside the Paradiso Club after night two). It was the most intimate venue I’ve ever seen Phish, a converted church with stained glass windows that lit up while they played, a place where you could walk inside with a glass bong in one hand and your ticket in the other. I actually wore that t-shirt that Miner pictured here, borrowed it from the girl that was with us b/c it was a bit nippy outside. We were definitely all on the ‘back of the worm’ through the canals of Amsterdam, and a part of my memory and soul still is…

  6. fat bastard Says:

Moonshake, what did the girl wear>what was she toppless? sounds like an awesome time. I really hope I can pull it off and go over the pond next time they do Europe, which according to Miner is nxt spring.

  7. MOONSHAKE Says:

    fat bastard:

heheh… no she bought the shirt from the show as a souvenir before we left, then she let me borrow it.

  8. Robear Says:

“To the Moon, Moonshake!” Great story! Never been to Europe. Wish I could have beat the McDonaldization of the planet, and gotten out a bit whence younger. Se la vi’.

My slow connection does not allow me to watch any of these video’s. I was at the IT, but was having a serious meltdown with my then wife. I listened to the ‘tower jam’ on the stereo from my truck. That weekend contained lots of great music, much of which I missed. My whole memory from that trip is the color gray. That was a perfect example of how a person’s state of mind, body and soul, can have an overwhelming influence on the Phish experience. It wasn’t my first rodeo, but it was the first time personal issues clouded the event.

Soon, I need to give that whole weekend a listen….and find that little PBS video, as well.

  9. Robear Says:

‘Scents and subtle sounds; colors in the void’

  10. good buzz Says:

I was at those Amsterdam shows too. and the one in Amsterdam in Feb – caught 11 in europe in 97. was at this vienna show too, and haven’t heard it since that night, so pretty nice saturday morning. Most intimate venue was Cologne germany feb 97 – around 500 people. have a super weekend.

  11. gus Says:

just listened to the went gin for the first time…my life is now complete.

  12. JP Says:

totally hear you robear. so many phactors go into defining the overall experience.

great show stories Moonshake – would think very seriously about trying to hit some euro shows if 10 rumors bear fruit.

hope everyone has a great weekend – go Dawgs!

  13. JP Says:

SS&S @ IT is the defining version that i’ve heard – anyone have some recomendations on better/standout versions? was so hoping for that at gorge 09.

  14. Robear Says:

JP, I was hoping for S&SS @ Shoreline! I hope they dust that one off and launch her at Indio. While waiting for traffic en route to Coventry, the last show from Worcester? was broadcast on the radio. I thought they played a great ‘Scents’ to close the show, I think. Of course that blew the chance of hearing it at Coventry, which in retrospect, was probably for the best.

Just blared the ‘Scents’ from 7/9/03 @ Shoreline. My son got a kick out of it, big smiles!

  15. JP Says:

certainly a song for smiles – that is awesome.

your thought on the SS&S around coventry was actually from the show in camden in between great woods and coventry. would have loved to have been at this one based on the setlist (i remember being pretty crushed when i saw it b4 heading to vt, and now you’ve got me intrigued about this show again. any reviews?

was at both great woods shows and coventry. i’ve said my blessings for having seen more than just coventry many a time – though i think only set 1 night 1 was in that upper echelon of phish magic (for me). 8.10.04 with a great bag and birds anchoring a spacious first set – i have been thinking about this d/l for a while. get a little scared off in terms of sound quality of 2.0 on livephish though.

was the dwd you saw at shoreline the highlight for you? there were two super cool people right near me at the gorge from sacremento who had been to shoreline and i kept feeling weird for them in terms of the repeats, starting of course with the very hard to figure out dwd opener. anyway, they didn’t seem too bummed – good people!

  16. Robear Says:

JP, I loved everything at Shoreline, and the ‘DWD’ was a clear highlight, along w/ ‘Bowie’, ‘Suzy’, ‘Divided’, ‘Cities’, ‘Maze’, ‘Sweet Nuthin’ and ‘Mike’s Groove’. Still kicking myself for not getting to the Gorge. It will stick in my craw from here on out, I reckon.

Yeah, you’re right, it was Camden. Listening on the radio, it sounded great. One of the highlights of the weekend, sadly. I agree on your first set comment, from Coventry.

just got bassed last night…man that fucking place was RAGING!
show was off the chain. i posted some cell phone videos here:

  19. JP Says:

Miner – can you comment on sound quality of the sbds for 03/04? I have gorge 03 and something just isn’t right to my ear. any better in 04 iyo? thx for the recs.

sadly, i wasn’t into much at all from coventry. despite all the negatives, i felt like you could really feel the raw emotion in the music, thinking the melt specifically. were you into first set night 1?

loved set 1 from 8.10.04 great woods. nice on shoreline, leg 2 was pretty amazing, at least out west 😉

  20. JP Says:

love hearing that the mike shows are going off!

  21. whole tour! Says:

i’ve never seen that place go off like it did last night
    mike brought the heat
straight head babging mike all night

i called that they would play ‘swamp music’ at the freebird…and they did! tore that song a new one. They were teasing ‘sugar shack in one jam’ Meat encore that was like a heavy metal meat.

  22. BrandonKayda Says:

    That Tower Jam is DARK.

  23. whole tour! Says:

  24. JP Says:

do people expect a tower/ambient type set at indio somehow or does the costume set take sort of compensate? these type of explorations are my favorite thing about the fests. hoping the release the soundcheck from indio as a bonus on the d/ls.

  25. Robear Says:

Coventry was a mental, emotional and natural storm from the beginning. I haven’t gone back and listened to any of it. I got confused on your earlier post, JP. I’d have to look at the Coventry set lists. It reminds me of Mr. C’s comment about Portland Meadows for the Dead in ’95. Some big jams in an otherwise sub-par outing. Like you said, though, lots of raw emotion pouring from the stage. I remember the first night thinking to myself, “I hope Trey’s family is not here.” Then his mom came out with Mike’s mom the second day.
