Weekend Nuggets: Two Nights In Europe

Europe '97 Summer Tour T-Shirt

This weekend, I am featuring two shows from the game-changing tour of Europe Summer ’97.  Fully realizing their transformation to groove, Phish explored slow, funky realms throughout the beginning of summer. Warming up to the point of sizzling over the course of a 19 show European tour, Phish then turned their attention stateside for one of the most beloved summer runs.  Starting in Virgina Beach and ending in Limestone, Summer ’97 was a special era of Phish.  But the excellence we witnessed throughout the U.S. had its foundation in Phish’s European vacations in winter and summer.  These two nights represent explorations of the new style, with funk galore and a whole lot more.  These Europe ’97 shows are very underexposed, in general, containing many a night glossed over.  These are two of those nights.

I’m seeing the blue Trey picture that was up here a couple of days ago

  2. Mr. Completely Says:

Miner is manning the Dharma “Phish Station,” love it – is the Tower Jam the training video? Time travelling bunnies is pretty much all that thing is missing…

  3. Mr. Completely Says:

    you preferred the monkey?

I love that Trey shot…especially big…you can barely see his glasses, it’s super weird lookin

  4. EL Duderino Says:

    I’m an Obama supporter!

  5. voopa Says:

    @ Chuck D

“7/15/98 Tweezer > California Love > Tweezer > Free just got me pumped for 8 like I couldn’t believe”

No shit…just checked that out again the other day myself. I think the Free jam might be even better than Tweezer. The thick start/stop funk in there is some of the best ever.

  6. butter Says:

gettin ready to head over to Soldier Field for Bears vs Steelers, i haven’t been there since the last GD show in 95

  7. EL Duderino Says:

Me too butter. Would love to go to the game !!!!!

  8. fat bastard Says:

    Cutler blows it again today

  9. Robear Says:

    Lions upset the Favikings today!

Yeah, Butter, that was my last trip to Soldier as well. Today, Ashley woops you at Fantasy, though. I finally see your Mastiff. My browser is slow to update avatar’s! El Dude, that statue looking picture of Warren is funny.

Phish mgmt. 1 “Should we announce the fall dates yet?”
Phish mgmt. 2 “Virgin Air is having a blow-out fare sale. Lets get a few more tix sold to Indio. We’ll announce after the sale.”

  10. fat bastard Says:

when the GD played Soldier field in 1995 i was 18 and a bag boy and the local Jewel. My girlfriend had two tickets to see The Grateful Dead and wanted to know if I wanted to go. I said no thanks, I have to work at Jewel. dumbest move I ever made.

  11. EL Duderino Says:

    @ fat bastard

If that was gonna be your first GD experience… You didn’t miss much. It was rather sad on many levels. I Miss My Jerry Licks!!!!

  12. fat bastard Says:

    yeah I never saw em.

  13. EL Duderino Says:

IMHO 1991 was the last good year!!!

  14. Al Says:

I’ve just finished listening to the new album JOY:

I think it is really good. When Miner reviewed it I thought I might be very dissapointed – but, no, I like it.

But there are a few things I’d like to say about the mix:
    1. Trey’s vocals are too compressed in my my view. Sometimes I hardly recognize his voice.
    2. His vocal performance on the first refrain of Joy is far from note perfect. Pretty painful.
    3. …but the biggest criticism goes to the mix of Trey’s lead guitar solos. They are all mixed to the right corner, so when you listen to the album on your iPod/headphones, only your right ear will enjoy his playing which is really a shame cause it diminishes his playing to an itching noice from the side. My God, Steve – why did you do that??????

But anyway – I am really happy with the album. But I’ll probably listen to it more often on my Hifi than on my iPod, I suppose.

  15. Robear Says:

Jerry’s famous last words @ Soldier Field

“I will walk alone, by the LAST Muddy River, sing me a song of my own”

The last Dead tour had some things in common with Coventry.

  16. EL Duderino Says:

“Should I be Jerry or should I be Trey”

This line sums it up for me. Self destruction!

  17. EL Duderino Says:

    @ Robear

And that’s why Phil was like “Fuck this we are not ending this tour like that”, then came Box Of Rain and you can here the curfew horn going off. Heading back to the car we all knew it was over. So sad! I love Phish as much as next person here. Hell, I’ve seen much more Phish than GD and Jerry shows. But I do have to say “There Is Nothing Like A Grateful Dead Concert anywhere” They were the best shows on earth!!!

  18. BingosBrother Says:

Last Dead show = my only Dead show. I was also 18 FB. FWIW I had a great time. Vivid memory of Jerry pointing at us during Sugar Mag and fireworks after show. Funny story. Super spun on booms walking out of show and had to piss. If you’re familiar with Soldiers Field there isn’t much grass outside of it, mostly concrete. PortaJohn located on super small patch of grass. Me, waiting in line, start to feel something biting my ankles, look down to ants covering my feet up to ankles. Start screaming, “are these ants real!”, “is this real!” People busting up laughing while assuring me that said ants are real and helping get those fuckers off me. Good Times. I miss Jerry, too.

  19. halcyon Says:

Mr C…..Thanks for the Floyd Link

    @ Al…..welcome back…where you been?

  20. Lycanthropist Says:

    is exhausted!!!

but going to the Avett Brothers show tonight with the wife.

    Should be a blast.

Haven’t seen my wife for real in about a week!

  21. BingosBrother Says:

going to the Avett Brothers show tonight with the wife.

You lucky duck. Tell me how it was? Have records but never seen live.

  22. GuitarPicker420! Says:

@Bingos – that’s pretty freaking hilarious. ants of all things. I love that the last line ever sung at a Grateful Dead concert was “such a long, long time to be gone and a short time to be there.” Talk about apocryphal.

  23. halcyon Says:

Bingos….I caught them about 4 weeks ago, great show. You will have a great time.

  24. BrandonKayda Says:

GD ended their final Jerry show with Box of Rain, that sounds fitting, lyric-wise. How did everybody know it was over? Did they announce it as their “final shows” a-la Coventry? Stupid novice questions, sorry. Carry on.

Thanks for that 91′ comp Completely, I am really enjoying it this morning.
