Weekend Nuggets: Two Nights In Europe

Europe '97 Summer Tour T-Shirt

This weekend, I am featuring two shows from the game-changing tour of Europe Summer ’97.  Fully realizing their transformation to groove, Phish explored slow, funky realms throughout the beginning of summer. Warming up to the point of sizzling over the course of a 19 show European tour, Phish then turned their attention stateside for one of the most beloved summer runs.  Starting in Virgina Beach and ending in Limestone, Summer ’97 was a special era of Phish.  But the excellence we witnessed throughout the U.S. had its foundation in Phish’s European vacations in winter and summer.  These two nights represent explorations of the new style, with funk galore and a whole lot more.  These Europe ’97 shows are very underexposed, in general, containing many a night glossed over.  These are two of those nights.

@brandon “GD ended their final Jerry show with Box of Rain, that sounds fitting, lyric-wise. How did everybody know it was over? Did they announce it as their “final shows” a-la Coventry? Stupid novice questions, sorry. Carry on.”

they knew it was over because jerry died not long after… (that show was the last show of the tour)

  3. EL Duderino Says:

Deep down in your heart you knew it was over. Look at pics from ’94-’95 he aged 20 years in 1. Barley conscious on stage at times.

  4. EL Duderino Says:

I blame a lot on “Kuntz the killer” (Deborah Koonz Garcia) Jerry’s 3rd wife

  5. EL Duderino Says:

She brought him the dope at Serenity Knolls Rehab Center. The night before he died Staff members saw him in her car in the parking lot. I wonder what was going on?????

  6. BrandonKayda Says:

That’s crazy. Why would she bring him drugs while he was in rehab?

My computer has decided to not work, so I have yet to rip those 91′ mixes onto my iPod.

Truckin’ seems like it would’ve been a nice tour ender too. “What a long, strange trip it’s been”

  7. BrandonKayda Says:

Any of you guys watching the Steeler game?

  8. EL Duderino Says:

Why do they call her “The Widow”?

I saw 7 shows from Europe summer ’97…Amsterdam through Marseille. I remember clearly the opener at the first Amsterdam show was Ghost…and this was before they switched it to the spacier sounding funk like the version on the album, but just the straight-forward-funk version. Obviously, I had never heard the song before, but I do remember thinking “Whoa….what IS this?” The last show I had seen before Amsterdam was Omaha from the previous fall….and compared to that it was almost like they were a completely different band. It was really neat to see such a rapid evolution of the bands’ sound all through 1997.

Also got that shirt that is pictured from the Amsterdam show and a cool poster from the venue which I have never seen another copy of since…. I’ve long since worn out and lost the shirt but the poster is still framed on my wall in the living room. Great times….thanks Miner for posting this!
