Fall Tour ?

It’s almost October and no fall tour announcement – hmmm.  We know its happening; Trey mentioned that fall was mapped out in a recent interview with Timeout: New York, while Mike vaguely discussed further fall Phish plans with the newspaper, The Poughkeepsie Journal.  The rumored dates that have circulated for well over a month seem all but set-in-stone.  Then why is Phish holding back?

fest8Rumor has it that ticket sales for Indio haven’t gone as well as expected, potentially pushing back the announcement of any other shows.  Well, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to predict that placing the festival as far as possible from the band’s home turf, in an expensive resort town, would adversely effect the draw. With trips from the east coast to Indio totaling in the $1000 range, people aren’t exactly flocking across the country.  This limited audience is one reason that Festival 8 could send the intimate west coast crowd directly to Cloud 9. The organization seems to have stripped away any surrounding shows from Halloween, in an effort to funnel everyone out west to Indio. If the band was playing the Hollywood Bowl in a month, you’d think we’d know already. But it seems just as peculiar that Phish wouldn’t play a couple warm-up gigs before stepping under the vast desert sky of Festival 8.

At this point, it seems that plans have been made – so announce the shows.  The set of dates that have circulated for quite some time, from a number of reliable sources are as follows:

Fall Tour 2009
November 20: US Bank Arena – Cincinnati, Ohio
November 21: US Bank Arena – Cincinnati, Ohio
November 24: Wachovia Center – Philadelphia, PA
November 25: Wachovia Center – Philadelphia, PA
November 27: Times Union Center – Albany, NY
November 28: Times Union Center – Albany, NY
December 2: Madison Square Garden – New York, NY
December 3: Madison Square Garden – New York, NY
December 4: Madison Square Garden – New York, NY
December 5: John Paul Jones Arena – Charlottesville, VA

Indoor Phish Awaits (Unk)

Indoor Phish Awaits (Unk)

All of these high-key east coast shows will sell out in minutes, perhaps another factor reasoning into the delayed announcement.  Assuming this is the Fall Tour, it a mere ten shows.  But of these ten shows, seven are in absolutely classic houses of Phish and will certainly be spectacles.  The Spectrum > MSG chunk of the tour is the true meat, with a midwestern appetizer and a southern dessert.  With an extensive summer under their belt, it’s not surprising that Phish would reel it back a bit for the fall. When an initial month long trek was rumored, it seemed like we were back in the late ’90s rather than in ’09.  But as we approach 2010, the mere existence of fall tour is cause for celebration.

In all likelihood, we will hear something soon- just in time to juice you for “mail-order” money before heading to Indio. But fall tour will be upon us before we know it, transitioning this experiment in latter-day Phish from the breeze-filled nights of summer to the dark, concrete super-structures where dreams come true.  Three multi-night stands and three nights at MSG in the middle of tour?!!  If this is all true, go ahead, Phish, and take your sweet time to announce the dates.  We’ll be here waiting.

Jam of the Day:

Free” 11.22.95 II

An aborted second-set opening “Rift”  made way for the most colossal “Free” ever played.

5.3.1985 Last Day Party, UVM-Redstone Burlington, VT SBD < Torrent

5.3.1985 Last Day Party, UVM-Redstone, Burlington, VT SBD < Mega

phishThis is an historic Phish show for many reasons.  First and foremost, this was the first time Page sat in with the band, playing for the entirety of set III.  Strewn with Dead covers, including the only known performance of “The Other One,” Phish was still in the process of finding their musical niche- and their keyboard player.  If that doesn’t give this show enough significance, it also contains the first known performances of “Mike’s Song,” “McGrupp,”  “Alumni Blues,” “Dave’s Energy Guide,” and also the first incarnation of “Antelope.”

I: Slave to the Traffic Light, Mike’s Song* > Dave’s Energy Guide*, Big Leg Emma**

II. Alumni Blues, Wild Child, Can’t You Hear Me Knocking, Jam > Cities, Bring It On Home**

III: Scarlet Begonias > Eyes of the World, Whipping Post, McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters* > Makisupa Policeman > Run Like an Antelope Jam*^ > The Other One**

E: Anarchy

*debut, ** only performance, ^ jam only

Notes: The only part of set I that is on this recording is “Mike’s > Dave’s Energy Guide.” All of Set II is missing. This is the only known circulated source of this show.

Man…it sure would be sweet if those Hollywood bowl rumors came true (and the Warfield too!)…but it sure doesn’t seem likely at this point. Definitely agree with Miner that the less people that find their way to Indio, the more intrigue it adds to these shows. Don’t get me wrong…I’m all for everybody making it (and highly recommend everyone figuring out a way to do so!)…but everybody knows how that works….Phish has a funny way of making people remember that ticket sales might have been subpar for certain shows (see: Salt Lake City ’98 + ’03). But I certainly won’t complain if an already chill west-coast vibe is only enhanced by a more intimate setting. Either way…see ya’ll in Indio!!!

  2. Baxter Says:

Nice topic! I have read/heard the same dates, and hope you are right. My in-laws live in Albany, so I know where I’ll be going for Thanksgiving this year!

  3. Mr. Icculus Says:

what are the new year show rumors at this point?

  4. Phil Says:

See you in Indio! Travelling cross country and can’t wait. When you can go to a Phish halloween show, you go to a Phish Halloween show. Period.

  5. Little Buddy Says:

    Mr. Icculus:

NYE in Miami. Most have accepted this as reality, although technically it’s still a rumor.

  6. JerZ Says:

Suppose I cant complain too much because Colorado has so much great music all year round, but this tour makes me miss being in JerZ and being in the epicenter of Phish indoor venues- the original rumors that I saw not only had Hollywood Bowl- but also McNichols Arena in Denver- anyone hear anything about that?

  7. Pencilneck Says:

Where’s my Toronto dates! Chamon now!

  8. Lycanthropist Says:

    mentioned it last night

    gonna mention it again

Prefuse 73 rocked my brain last night. And all I had to do was walk a block from my house to get there.

    Frakkin incredible.

  9. EL Duderino Says:

Have any of you considered that maybe there will be no fall-tour dates? New Years only looks like more of a reality everyday! We have to remember the economy sucks balls for a lot of people. I think the days of three tours a year are over for this band for now. A big summer tour and a holiday tour might be it for awhile IMO.

  10. beepaphone Says:

    Morning folks –
as stated last night, bear with me. Just got up, need to tweak some files. 10/14/95 MMW with trey will be posted soon. Hopefully within a few hours.

  11. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

I think my favorite Fall Tour rumor that I have heard thus far was one I heard way back at Hampton. Did anybody else hear tell of that crazy rumor that Phish was going to play a 10 night run at MSG? That one made me laugh.

  12. tela'smuff Says:

    Cincy will be a rager!!!

Also, instead of going to yesterdays posts, if Miner reads this, I think it’s hard pressed to call that a true My Left Toe. While I for sure he the foundation of the song, it’s almost as if they never really get it there and instead jam around the theme. Eventually it seems quite clear to me they are jamming on a mix of MLT and Hydrogen. Not to say that it doesn’t soar to epic heights, because it does. It’s just if I were inclined to nerd it up I would really have to go with the MLT from 7-25-99 as the definitive version.

  13. fat bastard Says:

    MLT reminds me of TMWSITY

  14. VTsnowboarder802 Says:

I really would like to spend my b-day in Albany.

  15. albert walker Says:

With MSG was on the weekend

looking like my only shows between INDIO and Miami
still hit them but would be better if they were later in the week
getting floor seats from scalpers will be pretty brutal also
    what can you do

West coasters are not going to buy their tix early
most are just not as in to it
I would not be surprised if half the tix are sold the day of
good luck trying to predict total attendance from sales at this point

hope it’s empty out there. more room for me

  16. pebbles Says:

It’s a little myopic to suggest that there will be no fall tour because of the economy (sorry, duderino, no disrespect intended). They pulled off a heckuva summer tour, and the economy wasn’t exactly dynamite 6 weeks ago, either. Besides, they’ll make a killing doing those dates– there are more than enough people on the right coast to fill MSG 3 times in a row, even midweek. And the band will make money on it, and doesn’t have to go far from home to pull it off.

Besides, when has Miner been wrong about one of these calls? (The answer is never, as far as I can tell).

  17. albert walker Says:

sorry Wish MSG was on the weekend

  18. albert walker Says:

    bad economy?

    someone tell the Dow
it has been on fire lately

  19. BTB Says:

I would accept those dates – I’ll take what I can get. I knew there wasn’t going to be a “fall tour”, but was hoping to get some shows in December. I’ll take it.

And Miner, I think you’re spot on with the logic of why the dates haven’t been announced for the NE b/c of Indio.

  20. HarryHood Says:

Assuming that the fall tour date rumors are true, does anyone have any suggestions of good places to stay for the MSG shows?

  21. BTB Says:

the Dow is a leading indicator!! Pain everywhere – shambles – pain – grief – took our jobs! just kiddin – we’ll be back at 10,500 soon enough.

  22. fat bastard Says:

ALBERT you know the stock market is not the economy

  23. albert walker Says:

    I was kidding

but yes every piece of economic data coming out the past few weeks has blown away the estimates

all the bearish old school cats are flipping bullish.

if it holds who knows. but this stimulus is causing some growth. see if it lasts.

  24. albert walker Says:

at our age most of us have equity exposure

with a 50% plus move off March lows
I imagine that people will have more money to see shows
at least more than they had in March

  25. BTB Says:

I’m rooting for stagflation and spring tour….
