Ambient Evolution – An Audio Post

The Fox - 6.16 (B.Kisida)

The Fox - 6.16 (B.Kisida)

In an effort to switch things up, I decided to go with an “audio post” today. I often write about Phish’s ambient styles, and ever-evolving use of sound and layered psychedelia, so today I put together a mix that brings you on an audio tour through 1998, 1999, and 2000. Instead of focusing on songs or jams, I put a lens on ambient improv, creating an 80-minute “Trip Through the Late ’90s.” The jams evolve from a section of ’98, to a section of ’99, and concludes with a section of music from 2000. I will post a setlist once I figure it out, as I made the mix on the fly and it’s getting late out here. See if you notice an evolution through the years, or just kick back and space out. Enjoy! (As usual, click the orange track title to download the mix.)

David Bowie” 10.12.94 II

The first serious Fall ’94 “Bowie.” There would be many more.

phish-palumbo-94-miniThis show – Phish’s most recent October 12 offering – celebrates its fifteenth anniversary today. In only the fifth show of a 40+ gig tour, Phish boasted well-polished chops and masterful communication. A soaring second-song “Reba” led into this focused night of music that centered on the second set jams of “David Bowie” and “YEM,” and ” Harry Hood,” with “Bowie” taking the cake.

I: My Friend, My Friend, Reba, The Sloth, Poor Heart, Split Open and Melt, The Lizards, Guelah Papyrus, Julius, Sweet Adeline

II: Peaches en Regalia, David Bowie, Bouncing Around the Room, Scent of a Mule, You Enjoy Myself, Nellie Kane*, Foreplay/Long Time, Harry Hood, Sample in a Jar

E: Good Times Bad Times

  3. Lycanthropist Says:

    Listener Warning:

    May cause zoning at work.

Do not operate heavy machinery or crunch heavy numbers

  4. HarryHood Says:

I think it’s safe to say that most of us are pretty zoned at work anyhow.

  5. beepaphone Says:

Yeah I might have to save this one till after work

  6. SJC Says:

^lol. yup. Damn the heavy numbers, I’m going ambient anyway.

  7. Lycanthropist Says:

yeah gives a new meaning to backwards down the number line

that is what i am doin this morning…

my eyes keep closin as i am fillin in graphs..

    not good.

  8. MOONSHAKE Says:

    Morning PT, got a question:

It states on Phish website that orders made on different credit cards by same person at same billing address will possibly be rejected…

but is it okay if two different people (roommates, family members) put in an order and they have same billing address?

  9. fat bastard Says:

im sure thats ok mOoNsHaKe, your all caps now?

  10. henrietta Says:

“but is it okay if two different people (roommates, family members) put in an order and they have same billing address?”

Why risk it? I was going to do it with my wife that way, but just decided to use my cousin instead.

BTW Minor…My students are doing there work and enjoying the ambiant today….Inner city kids and you can hear a pin drop.

  11. MOONSHAKE Says:

    RE: your all caps now?

thanks for pointing that out, I didn’t even realize that I had done that. I think I’ll have to change the double-O to double-0 soon, as I signed up for gravatar but mOOnshake was unavailable. now I’ve got to find a suitable avatar…

  12. MOONSHAKE Says:

    RE: two people, same address

I’ll contact Phish tickets for clarification on this issue. Until then, I’m going to assume ‘only one order per household’ because I’d really hate to risk it.

  13. fat bastard Says:

hall and oates got whacked…whats the count at now, around 60?

  14. Pence Says:

Ive been meaning to start listening to the most probables for the halloween set, but I cant stop listening to the pha pha phish.

The ambient track is perfect for my work, sooo relaxing. I was up late last night, and was able to D/L and get it on the pod, along with ziggy SD.

@FB this site is tracking the Living/Dead albums, its continually updated and has some other cool stats. (If you havent already seen it) —>

  15. Stupendous Says:

    Maybe its been talked about…but….
Has anybody noticed that some albums have embeded links to live you tube performances…..a clue???…. Also I feel like the album covers that have been photoshopped are jokes and arent real costume posibilities???
Looking really careful yesterday… I noticed the talked about petty’s phish shirt,
the viking hat pretzel logic, and the not so talked about Beastie boys with phish inside the sardine/tuna can…. Fishman made it into one of exile on main st’s vintage b&w photos…of course there’s the boss with Trey’s guitar… the T.Rey (t.rex) and “Page” Against the machine….and the colorado 88 page&trey in Rush’s moving pictures….
does this narrow it down or what ??? hmmm just a thought

  16. VTsnowboarder802 Says:

    @moon –
My wife and I have diff last names, and different CC’s, and live at the same address (obviously), and we’ve never had problems with this. Otherwise what would they do for people living in appartments? Don’t use the same name, or same CC, and I think you’ll be fine.

  17. SJC Says:

Had to kill the ambient. Just doesn’t work at the office. Back to the Big Cat Disease. Can’t get enough of those Japan JsOTD.

  18. sumodie Says:

i believe ptbm has said before that 2 people same address is ok.

  19. bearito Says:

^ It’s all a ruse stupendous imo. Tomfoolery, if you will.

Lovin’ the ambiance this morning Miner. Grazie!

  20. SOAM Says:

    This is your song too..

  21. beepaphone Says:

    @ Stupendous

And thats obviously Mike wearing the jeans on the Sticky Fingers album cover.

  22. afroskully Says:

i miss those good ‘ole mail order days. You were pretty much guaranteed to get tickets once you sent that money order in the mail. Now with the ease of technology, any half witted scalper can preorder tix.

(cranky old man voice). Waaaahhh… Back in My day….. (and so on..)

  23. Stupendous Says:

    @ Beep
    LMAO !!!

  24. Neemor Says:

I’ve always loved Phish as “background music.”
I’ve always noticed its quality or ability to be put on and just sort of play while the world goes on around it.
A lot of times, like yesterday, there was supposed to be a 2001 tease in Gin before it dropped proper (JOTD). I could not for the life of me find that tease.
Cuz I just let the music float on around me without paying attention. It sort of lulls me to ambience.
Makes me look left while it subversively invades my brain with “ice cream for the ears.”
I guess it’s why I’m so easy to float flubs by and missed changes, band errors. They just don’t stand out for me.
    Ignorance is bliss.
So ambient Phish for me is pretty much redundant.
Don’t get me wrong, when the shit’s on, I can turn it on and focus on them melting my face or quickly pick up on a hot groove or tease when at a show.
But when listening to recordings, I find Phish’s charm is how it just blends into the fabric of life.
    There I said it.
What the fuck did I just say?!?
@SOAM-‘Treyzor’ is a classic nickname, never heard that for the Bad Lieutenant before, but very good.
For those that care: I’m listening to 5/18/68 Dead from the County Fairgrounds on Apparently it’s an aud recording by Jorma himself, pretty effin epic.
Good day, all…hope to get some work done today. JOTD might not help!

  25. Mr. Completely Says:

hey brothers so I’m looking for a fatty AUD of last friday’s epic show, that’s 10/9/09, it was a real rager unlike yesterday’s crapfest, I got totally spun during the Everything’s Coming Up Milhouse jam and ended up going back to a dingy hotel room with a midget nitrous wookette…
