Ambient Evolution – An Audio Post

The Fox - 6.16 (B.Kisida)

In an effort to switch things up, I decided to go with an “audio post” today. I often write about Phish’s ambient styles, and ever-evolving use of sound and layered psychedelia, so today I put together a mix that brings you on an audio tour through 1998, 1999, and 2000. Instead of focusing on songs or jams, I put a lens on ambient improv, creating an 80-minute “Trip Through the Late ’90s.” The jams evolve from a section of ’98, to a section of ’99, and concludes with a section of music from 2000. I will post a setlist once I figure it out, as I made the mix on the fly and it’s getting late out here. See if you notice an evolution through the years, or just kick back and space out. Enjoy! (As usual, click the orange track title to download the mix.)

The first serious Fall ’94 “Bowie.” There would be many more.

phish-palumbo-94-miniThis show – Phish’s most recent October 12 offering – celebrates its fifteenth anniversary today. In only the fifth show of a 40+ gig tour, Phish boasted well-polished chops and masterful communication. A soaring second-song “Reba” led into this focused night of music that centered on the second set jams of “David Bowie” and “YEM,” and ” Harry Hood,” with “Bowie” taking the cake.

I: My Friend, My Friend, Reba, The Sloth, Poor Heart, Split Open and Melt, The Lizards, Guelah Papyrus, Julius, Sweet Adeline

II: Peaches en Regalia, David Bowie, Bouncing Around the Room, Scent of a Mule, You Enjoy Myself, Nellie Kane*, Foreplay/Long Time, Harry Hood, Sample in a Jar

E: Good Times Bad Times

Yeah that’s Me……..I’m gonna look real good when I get home from work. I’d be very surprised if someone stole it. That’s never been a problem before………

  2. Robear Says:

top of the morning all! the season ending rain has finally arrived. Good timing, the mountains across the river from me have been burning the last week.

Awesome t-shirts available! Click my name for Phishthoughts t’s!

  3. Neemor Says:

I’m guessing that the first part of the JOTD from 98
is the Theme Jam that goes into McGrupp, first set 4/5/98 Providence CC.
    Total guess.

  4. Chillable Says:

Perfect jam for a gray, freezing rain morning. Thanks!

  5. Mr. Completely Says:

yeah Robear the weather has finally turned here too

from all around the valley you can hear the sound of scissors trimming the fruits of harvest

  6. MakisupaSecurity Says:

Listening to ambient blog during lunch, someone came walking by at the 17:30 mark, stuck their head in. “What the HELL are you listening to??”

  7. Mr. Completely Says:

when kiddo was a baby he really liked ambient, spacy things for calming music so I made a mix that was all like old Spiritualized tracks and Siket Disc stuff and abstract jams taken from the middle of old Dark Stars

once I shot a cute video of him doing, I don’t remember, some cute ass baby thing, and sent it around to family, and I got all these “WTF is THAT?!?” emails back…turns out the soundtrack was the meaty middle part of What’s The Use…it had become so normal to me I didn’t even notice it on the video

I’m jealous you pnw’ers. Having ‘drought’ issues here in the deep south.

  9. beepaphone Says:

outlook here in the midwest isnt much better

  10. Kenny Powers Says:

Neemor – def not, that Theme from 4.5.98 is hot as hell but doesn’t deviate from the Theme structure. Whatever that is at the beginning of the JOTD, it’s beautiful.

  11. Mr. Completely Says:

sorry to hear that, fellas – didn’t mean to rub it in…most high quality local production is indoors anyway but it’s still exciting when fall harvest rolls around

no question it is one of the greatest west coast luxuries. I’d be lying if I claimed it wasn’t a big factor in my original move out here.

not quite ready to break out of this Masada disk for the ambient adventure – probably after another coffee to avoid out of body trance induction

  12. albert walker Says:

Because of Indio I’m missing out on the annual harvest season trip out to Garberville.
Luckily got family driving down from SF with this years herbs.
Love the energy in northern cal around this time, great stuff.

Nice to see Arcade Fire down.

Some one over at PT said there’s a new message on Mike’s Hotline singing a verse as a clue to their costume. Does anyone call it to give any merit to this?

  14. albert walker Says:

I live in Chicago but we kick it northwest style
    that’s what drivers are for
a little taxed after the trip but def worth it
    what can you do

  15. Mr. Completely Says:

drivers earn their money, that’s for sure

I paid my dues as a young buck on the road – good way to work your way up but I was glad to be done with that phase

@bhizzle – I give NO merit to ANYTHING as an actual clue – photoshops, linked videos, soundchecks, arcane Mike messages, nothing. Phish is back to being playful. Enjoy the ride and assume that any “clue” is a red herring or just a joke.

  16. bhizzle Says:

    word mr. c

    esp.. coming from mike….

  17. bearito Says:

It really is a luxury Mr. C.

What I learned on my recent trip to the PNW:

Quantity + Quality + Affordability = West Coast Headies

  18. AintNoTele Says:

that’s the part that got me. I just made it to the 1hr7min mark, really good bass driven groove. i love looking at everyone else working and thinking, “they have no idea whats going on in these headphones”. from time to time i blast them with a funk-finger shot their way. POW sucka!

  19. MakisupaSecurity Says:

Mike is singing “Our Lips Are Sealed” by the GoGo’s, meaning he’s not telling!!!

  20. MakisupaSecurity Says:

    @ AintNoTele

  21. albert walker Says:

Mike does not care what album they play as long as it gives him an excuse to rock knee high, sequenced platform boots

There are def a few where this costume could work

  22. Birddog Says:

First snow of the year today in VT. Thanks Miner – little ambient jamming goes well with the white stuff.

  23. msbjivein Says:

I just checked Mike’s message….He definately sings some lyric to some song. Sounded familar but don’t know it right off hand nor am i going to worry about it. But he did say The recent rehersals are sounding Killer……

  24. msbjivein Says:

LOL!!! @ Makisupa I was wondering what he was singing…Halarious!!

  25. Mr. Completely Says:

you can also add to the equation the subtraction of paranoia and excess greed – at least up here it’s become so decentralized that rather than big networks with tog dogs making high cash stacks it’s more about lots of people making a solid professional living while doing what they love – almost impossible to bust for many reasons, and say what you want about

that shit’s hard work is what a lot of people don’t realize, take you eye off the ball for one day at the wrong time and months of work and investment are worthless bunk
