Ambient Evolution – An Audio Post

The Fox - 6.16 (B.Kisida)

In an effort to switch things up, I decided to go with an “audio post” today. I often write about Phish’s ambient styles, and ever-evolving use of sound and layered psychedelia, so today I put together a mix that brings you on an audio tour through 1998, 1999, and 2000. Instead of focusing on songs or jams, I put a lens on ambient improv, creating an 80-minute “Trip Through the Late ’90s.” The jams evolve from a section of ’98, to a section of ’99, and concludes with a section of music from 2000. I will post a setlist once I figure it out, as I made the mix on the fly and it’s getting late out here. See if you notice an evolution through the years, or just kick back and space out. Enjoy! (As usual, click the orange track title to download the mix.)

phish-palumbo-94-miniThis show – Phish’s most recent October 12 offering – celebrates its fifteenth anniversary today. In only the fifth show of a 40+ gig tour, Phish boasted well-polished chops and masterful communication. A soaring second-song “Reba” led into this focused night of music that centered on the second set jams of “David Bowie” and “YEM,” and ” Harry Hood,” with “Bowie” taking the cake.

I: My Friend, My Friend, Reba, The Sloth, Poor Heart, Split Open and Melt, The Lizards, Guelah Papyrus, Julius, Sweet Adeline

II: Peaches en Regalia, David Bowie, Bouncing Around the Room, Scent of a Mule, You Enjoy Myself, Nellie Kane*, Foreplay/Long Time, Harry Hood, Sample in a Jar

E: Good Times Bad Times

form the corporation, and submit a proposal to phish inc. if someone were to take the intiative to do this, it might actually happen.

I thought about it a lot. Would be hard to break into that business without credentials and history. I mean, you would be handling upwards of 50% of a bands tickets for sale. That is the one thing you can not fuck up. They would be looking for references and history in ticket management I would think.

  2. Mr. Completely Says:

phish does not have that information in usable form.

    they should.

    @ Leo

Thanks for the welcome. I brought some nugs down from Chicago but will be looking in a couple of weeks. Any Ideas Leo? I liked Walnut Creek for the smallness of it. We got Sect 6 row M tix. Dead center right behind the box seats. great view and really nice sound. Massive video screeens in the pavilion area too.

problem is, the ones that show up on the lot account for something like .0001 percent of the total number of scalpers/ticket scalped.

I haven’t been online in a while so I’m sure I’m late with this.

You guys know that the 7/31/09 RR dvd from teamhood is up @ TTD…Right? Just downloading now.

  7. morecowbell (aka jay) Says:

thanks dude, my favorite show all tour!

  8. albert walker Says:

You getting the NFL package down there dude.

Could not live without my Bears, Cubs, and Hawks if I left the city

  9. Neemor Says:

The Halley’s I was referring to was the comet that flew over Hartford (hence the Mother Nature comment).
    Hope that makes sense now.

  10. EL Duderino Says:

    @ AW

I’m with you there. The Panthers are awful and would never be a fan. Sunday’s game is a Sunday Night NBC game so I’m good there. No NFL package yet but found a place to go to watch Bears games. I need the NBA package as well. I love the Bulls as you know too, so we have some work there as well.

  11. EL Duderino Says:

    @ AW

What fall dates are you going to0 besides the Festi 8?

  12. albert walker Says:

You may be better off without those Bulls games this year man.
Total disarray so far this preseason.
Need to blow that shit up all the way down to Rose.

  13. albert walker Says:

I meant all but Rose, by the way

    going back and force.
Maybe just fly out to MSG for the 3 nights.

No desire to go to detoilet or cinci.
need to like the city, the venue, and the band to all fall into place these days to see shows

  14. albert walker Says:

NYC and MSG sounds like a real nice weekend

  15. EL Duderino Says:

Sounds good. We’re just going to the Charlottesville, VA. show. LeighAnne’s friend says it’s really nice there and the venue is almost brand new.

Derek Trucks in Durham, NC on 10/30/09

  16. morecowbell (aka jay) Says:

I heard the same thing about Charlottesville. Real nice brand new venue. Cool college town. Saturday show. Tour closer. Jesus, I need to find a way to make it there.

  17. morecowbell (aka jay) Says:

    upcoming shows for me:

    Butthole Surfers with Peaches opening.
    The Pouges (original members)
    Zappa plays Zappa

  18. Mr. Completely Says:

charlottesville is a real nice, chill college town

  19. EL Duderino Says:

    R there mts. Mr. C ?

  20. morecowbell (aka jay) Says:

Charlottesville is fairly close to the Appalachian trail and the Shenandoah valley. Real beautiful.

  21. Mr. Completely Says:

it’s right at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains. I would not call where it actually is “mountains,” more like really beautiful foothills. You go over one little ridge of mountains right by the city and you’re in the Shenandoah Valley, then the actual Blue Ridge is just on the other side of that.

  22. Mr. Completely Says:

all of that Blue Ridge country from south of Asheville NC up to west of Charlottesville and out into West VA is just very lovely – I grew up camping in those mountains and they will always have a place in my heart.

  23. morecowbell (aka jay) Says:

I stayed in a hotel in that valley. Was an old hospital converted. Real nice. Had a bar in the place called The Infirmary

  24. Mr. Completely Says:

Hey Miner – did you do these edits for the ambient mix directly to Mp3? Or is there a lossless version out there somewhere? cause, you know, 78 minutes is a nice length for a chill-out disk, just sayin’ 😮

  25. EL Duderino Says:

Looking forward to that. We took I 75 south to I 40 west through Knoxville to Raleigh on the way down here. The colors just started. In 2 weeks it’s gonna be sweet!
