Weekend Nuggets: Lemonwheel

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

phish-lemonwheel-98-smallPhish pumped everyone up yesterday with some great announcements about Festival 8, as it sits just at arm’s reach, less than two weeks away! Let’s take a deep breath this weekend and reflect on a festival past – 1998’s Lemonwheel. Limestone’s second season-ending festival brought six sets of pure fire. At the end of Summer ’98, Phish began blending ambient jamming into their repertoire, incorporating this style heavily in 8.16’s “Ghost.” But Summer ’98 was all about the laid-back funk, and the gem of this weekend was the second set of 8.15, featuring the massive combo of “Gunbo > Sanity > Tweezer,” all following a big-tim, festi-sized “Reba.” Set II of night II is also particularly strong, boasting “Disease > Piper, Ghost, Fluffhead” at the beginning of the frame. Six sets of greatness – plus the Ambient Set – later, and Phish had thrown one of their best weekends of all time.

  1. Lycanthropist Says:

what a beautiful sight to come home to after a party concluding in utter douchebaggery.

    thanks mr miner

  2. Uncle Ebeneezer Says:

Second that…I’m a horrible poker player. Nobody in the Northwest knows how to play Euchre….

  3. Mr.Miner Says:

Cheers Lycan and Uncle – sorry to hear about the douchebaggery

  4. Mugician Says:

Wow!!!! I’d totally work for them if I could pay the deposit 🙁 man, I want to go!

  5. sumodie Says:

Took my brother and his gf to Lemonwheel -zipped right from my folks house in Round Pond, ME. This time I remembered to take the back roads!

This festival is a blur to me (as my ex- and I had recently split). And I actually sat out the late night ambient set, which is so uncharacteristic of me. I opted to chill with my brother who was not a huge phish fan. Not sure that was the right choice!

FEight is just upon us, yet here I am longing for Phish to return to Limestone ME in 2010.

  6. sumodie Says:

    RE: F8

I’ll be flying into Palm Springs at noon on Thursday 10/29 and picking up my rental -if anyone needs a ride within a reasonable time frame let me know.

  7. Phish...Yup Says:

Lemonwheel weekend download = Nice. Thanks as always Miner.

Just got a promotion and raise, and all i want to do with said raise is get out to Eight. I figure with some buddies in SD (aka whale’s vagina) who will take care of camping gear, transportation, bud etc, i have to throw down the $500 on plane ticket from DC/festi ticket right? Anyone have a non cliche excuse to get out of work for a few days quasi last minute?

  8. Leo Weaver Says:

@Yup…congrats on the promotion and raise…those things are pretty hard to come by these days. And yeah, you’ve gotta celebrate bro! Not sure how THE MAN is in your situation, I’d just tell my boss that I’ve got a last minute opportunity to make a trip out west to visit some of my good friends who I haven’t seen in a long time. If you were my employee, and were at least quasi-honest with that story, I’d have no problem with it…as long as you have all your work done and deadlines met. The downfall of one of my employees last year was his overuse of the cliches…I told him once, “dude…if you’re hungover or laid up in bed with some hottie, just call and let me know, we’ll work it out.” Instead, he’d give me the “I had to take my car in for an oil change” or the “I’m at the dentist, didn’t remember to tell you yesterday” then he’d come in reeking of the previous night’s libations, unable to connect 5 words into a sentence. He was taking advantage of my somewhat liberal system and missed the memo that honesty/accountability trumps most. Good luck!

  9. Leo Weaver Says:

Nice bowl of (JotD) Gumbo Miner…tasty with the morning coffee on a cool rainy Saturday.

  10. ryan Says:

Does anyone know if there was a reason that they played the Riverbend Music Center in Cincy in 2000 instead of the Crown?

  11. m00nshake Says:

Euchre is a great card game. learned it from aussies in kampuchea… 1 dollar per person per game, playing in pairs

  12. beepaphone Says:

HMM just saw this in the new RS:

“Bob Weir and Phil Lesh have recruited John Kadlecik (Lead Guitarist from the Grateful Dead tribute band Dark Star Orchestra) for a new band called Further. Three warm-up shows featured an all-Dead setlist (and one new song). Further will launch a five-date East Coast tour on December 8th in New York.”

  13. beepaphone Says:

Euchre is huge in Indiana, but people hate having a partner who is new to the game, so I can’t get anyone to teach me. This has been an ongoing cycle for me since high-school. I am therefore anti-euchre.

  14. m00nshake Says:

    Phish…Yup:

If you just got a promotion/raise, it’d probably be disappointing to go to your boss and ask for 4 days off, but you know your boss and your position at work best. if you think you can pull it off without sounding like you’re being unappreciative, i’d say go for it.

  15. m00nshake Says:

I didn’t even know anyone played Euchre in the US. I didn’t learn about the game at all until I moved abroad. But again, that game is really fun, and yeah, my partners hated me too until I got a hang of the game.

  16. Robear Says:

Look good and lend support to this awesome site in one fell swoop! Check out the Phishthoughts t-shirts, courtesy of Mr. C and Mr. Miner by clicking my name.

Uncle Eb, no one in nor Cal know euchre either, unless they’re a transplant from the mid-west.

    Welcome back, Mugician!

Beep, my friend went to the Further shows in Oakland a couple weeks ago. He said it was the full on face melting bliss out.

They play New York City about 5 days after Phish.

  17. Leo Weaver Says:

In a recent conversation with Marshall, I mentioned NICU (and the show in general) from 11.23.97…made me want to listen to the first set of that show, which I’m doing now. My attention is usually centered on the 2nd set with the 30-min Gin opener followed by the 25-min DWD>LowRider>DWD…but the 1st set is no slouch. The Theme is dreamy and liqueous, almost like swimming thru the depths of the ocean…got a great build and release too. Then into Black Eyed Katy…nice wah work and chunky bass with a some nice peaks near the end. You guys should give it a go this weekend…

It’s also one of the infamous “Pepe le Peu t-shirt shows” 🙂

  18. fat bastard Says:

sumodie- Im flying in at 12:06. thursday from chicago. my friends should be picking me up. maybe we run into each other there? I’ll be supporting my phish thoughts t on the plane so look for it!

miner you make it all happen your the man!

  19. Pencilneck Says:

Aararrgh. The pain of not bein’ able to make feight is just tooo much. Somebody put me outta my misery. Or at least post a tasty dl for a brother. Oh. waitaminute. Danka Miner!

  20. Leo Weaver Says:

The t-shirts will be GREAT for spotting other PTers at feight…wish we’d had ’em at the gorge, I know a few I definitely would’ve run into! All the folks I’ve met from here are stand-up…I look forward to meeting others.

    11.23.97 Twist is the tits…SUPERB outro…

  21. Leo Weaver Says:

On the subject of running into other PTers at shows…found out I was 2 people in front of Marshall at Hampton 2. He showed me a pic of the stage from where he was standing and there was the back of my buddy’s head. It’s a small world out there guys…Miner’s created (or will create) lots of connections. Thanks Miner!

  22. Kenny Powers Says:

ryan – i would say the reason they played Riverbend instead of the Crown in ’00 was because it was technically still the summer amphitheater season. Most outdoor sheds in the colder weather places like the midwest and northeast have shows until the end of September.

  23. beepaphone Says:

    Re: Pencilneck, the pain

Those going to 8, this may be too much to ask, but if you come back with some kind of Big Cypress-like experience, see if you can downplay it a bit.
Maybe a one word review from Miner of a potentially epic experience: “Festival 8: meh.”
Tell me trey sounded like Dashboard Confessional during the acoustic set and they brought Pork Tornado back from the dead to cover it.
Tell me the Donuts were stale and the Bloody Mary’s were weak.
Well, on second thought, tell me how awesome it was, but wait till you see me at Cobo when I will no longer care so much.

  24. beepaphone Says:

of course I really do want everyone to max out on a good time

  25. Lycanthropist Says:

good lord that press release re: Fest8 is doing its job and making me try to figure out which organ i don’t need so i can sell it and make it out there.
