Weekend Nuggets: Lemonwheel

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

phish-lemonwheel-98-smallPhish pumped everyone up yesterday with some great announcements about Festival 8, as it sits just at arm’s reach, less than two weeks away! Let’s take a deep breath this weekend and reflect on a festival past – 1998’s Lemonwheel. Limestone’s second season-ending festival brought six sets of pure fire. At the end of Summer ’98, Phish began blending ambient jamming into their repertoire, incorporating this style heavily in 8.16’s “Ghost.” But Summer ’98 was all about the laid-back funk, and the gem of this weekend was the second set of 8.15, featuring the massive combo of “Gunbo > Sanity > Tweezer,” all following a big-tim, festi-sized “Reba.” Set II of night II is also particularly strong, boasting “Disease > Piper, Ghost, Fluffhead” at the beginning of the frame. Six sets of greatness – plus the Ambient Set – later, and Phish had thrown one of their best weekends of all time.

    Driving to Indy from Greenville next week. Drive takes about 7.5 to 8 hours. I think its about time that I gave The Show (1/1/2000) a true non-stop listen.

  2. Dbone Says:

    what if the trumpet player was a black female. what album would it be then? sorry – lame joke.

  3. Frankie Says:

    You guys seen this?

    Dub Like An Antelope: Legends of Reggae Celebrate Phish

    That’ll make Selector J happy! 🙂

  4. Mr.Miner Says:

    ive heard confirmed horn(s) from many people (not GCH). Just heard the vocalist today

  5. Marshall Says:

    Miner – this may have been asked already, but is your gravatar icon a Dharma Initiative symbol for the “Phish”?

  6. Mr. Completely Says:

    from http://jamtopia.com/blog/phish-festival-8-cover-album-teaser/

    albums with horns

    * Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
    * Curtis Mayfield | Superfly Soundtrack
    * Chicago | The Chicago Transit Authority
    * David Bowie | Ziggy Stardust
    * Frank Zappa | Apostrophe
    * Frank Zappa | Hot Rats
    * Michael Jackson | Thiller
    * Miles Davis | A Tribute To Jack Johnson
    * Pink Floyd | The Wall
    * Radiohead | Kid A
    * Steely Dan | Pretzel Logic
    * T.Rex | Electric Warrior
    * Rolling Stones | Exile on Main Street
    * Rolling Stones | Sticky Fingers
    * The Band | The Band (aka Brown Album)
    * The Clash | London Calling
    * The Police | Ghost in the Machine

    none of those have a featured *female* vocalist that I can think of (…?) but it could just be that they want someone to sing vocal parts in the higher registers (e.g. Superfly) and they just went that direction. Or it could just be for backing harmony parts.

    Or the whole thing could be misdirection.

  7. Mr. Completely Says:

    Thriller and Purple Rain also both have high vocal parts

  8. GuitarPicker420! Says:

    Female vocalist would certainly tend towards Exile. Frankly, it is one of my favorite albums of all time, and definitely my favorite Stones album. Gotta disagree with the disappointment Miner. I think that there are several great moments of psychedelia on that album (I would be floored to hear Just Wanna See His Face or Ventilator Blues). You are right that it would be bluesy and rocking, but it would also have tremendous moments of denouement, particularly Let It Loose and Shine A Light. Obviously have a rockin’ Loving Cup, but Torn and Frayed is a dark horse rocker. Happy, Tumblin’ Dice, Rip This Joint…it just is awesome.

    One great rumor I heard is that there is an album killing all the other albums off, in particular the 8th Rolling Stones album, Let It Bleed. I like that idea too, although some might think You Can’t Always Get What You Want is played out, it can jam with the best of them. If none of you have heard it, you must check out the King Biscuit ’73 (Also called a Brussels Affair) version. Wyman and Watts are locked in and the sax player just kills it!

  9. halcyon Says:

    Superfly would be dope … an all out funk fest

  10. frankie Says:

    I have a chance to drive out to ca from the east coast next week, but i would get there a week before the festival. i was thinking of backpacking for a few days in the joshua tree nat’l park and trekking in on thursday when camping opens. i looked into it and bus to la and flights are available and reasonably priced.

    should i go to f8?

  11. Mr.Miner Says:

    somone told me exile had female vocalist….is that incorrect?

  12. GuitarPicker420! Says:

    @frankie – that would be your basic no-brainer. Go, go, go!

  13. Mr.Miner Says:

    @ Marshall yes.

  14. GuitarPicker420! Says:

    @Mr. Miner – female vocals on exile would include tumbling dice, let it loose, just wanna see his face, and shine a light… that’s just off the top of my head.

  15. frankie Says:

    its not unreasonable to drop nearly 700 on a two week trek to see phish?

  16. GuitarPicker420! Says:

    @Miner – looking at album now, and those are all the songs with female vocalist listed. They really are key for tumbling dice, just wanna see his face and let it loose. More a swell during chorus of shine a light.

  17. joe Says:

    when has following the band ever really been ‘reasonable’ Frankie?

  18. GuitarPicker420! Says:

    @frankie – I’m dropping a grand for a weekend of phish at fest8. 700 for two weeks seems like quite the bargain. 🙂

  19. halcyon Says:

    700 looks awesome…DO IT!

  20. zippyhybrid Says:

    What airport are most people flying in to? I may be able to get out there on a standby flight (coming from Denver) and while I don’t know what flights will have open seats, Halloween doesn’t seem like a big travel holiday so I imagine that I could be fairly selective.

    The reason is that my girlfriend and I are thinking about trying to swing F8 on the lowest budget possible so we are hoping to catch a ride to the festival grounds from an airport rather than have to rent a car.

    Oh, and also, we may be broke but we aren’t wooks (just students) and are willing to generously pitch for gas money, if anyone were to have space for two and able to offer a ride….

    Thanks!

  21. halcyon Says:

    zippyhybrid … I might be driving from CO .. .or flying into vegas renting a car and driving from there.

  22. halcyon Says:

    dont know yet still waiting for Boss’s approval and some coworkers to pick up some shifts for me

  23. KWL Says:

    @zippy and halcyon: I AM driving from CO, 2 people right now in a subaru forester. Might be more and if that’s the case I won’t have room, but will know soon. Leaving a bit early to spend a night in flagstaff. Email me at keith dot lindner at gmail dot com if you are interested in carpooling.

  24. Leo Weaver Says:

    @marshall…yeah, do The Show on your drive…notice how the crowd comes back to life during Roses…man o man what a night. The stretch from CnP>Sand was my own personal Hunter S. Thompson moment – I was Mr. Duke having the time of my life…weird and wonderful.

    @frankie…hells yeah do it!

  25. zippyhybrid Says:

    @ halcyon

    We won’t be able to leave earlier than Thursday afternoon so driving from CO won’t work. However, if flying to Vegas and driving fits into that time frame….that may work.

    We’d be using employee companion passes on United so bigger airports = more flights = cheaper and more likely that we’ll get on the one we want. Just found out that flying directly to Palm Springs is way more expensive….even on standby, so it appears that the best options would be LAX or maybe Vegas….keep me posted on your plans, if you end up flying, email me at zippyhybrid at gmail dot com
