Ghost Stories – An Audio Post

Red Rocks - 7.31 (W.Rogell)

I’ve really been enjoying the audio posts as of late, and after four-hour baseball games, there’s nothing like unwinding with some Phish to the dome as the evening moves on. Sticking with a theme, this time I focused on “Ghost,” a song that has launched jams of all shapes and sizes. “Ghost’s” improv has been diverse and consistent since its debut (see below), but for this mix, I focused more on the groove side of things, speckled with doses of fast-paced psychedelia. Pulling several classics off the shelves I’ve crafted a small musical stanza of “Ghost Stories.” With Halloween around the corner, some spooky tales should serve the season right. With most of us  leaving one week from today – it’s about to be on – Indio awaits!

You know you’ve arrived when you spark a wave of imitators.

After taking a quick look at the competition (sarcastic), pretty funny.

Made me realize that although I may not agree with all his reviews or opinions on certain jams, Miner’s writing style is what keeps bringing me back.

Anyone can post a setlist and a few downloads, or make a list of best versions, but Miner’s original takes, in his personal style is what makes Phish Thoughts the success it is.

In agreement or disagreement you have become a known and trusted voice leading the triumphant return of the band we all love.

Nice Download of the day. I loved that show. Good run except for the debute of Jennifer Dances…….What was Trey thinking??

  3. Mitch Says:

    Harry,
If I bullied every artist into using my services and owned rights to every venue in the nation, I’d have money to build a decent server by now too. They get thousands on every single event that they sell. That’ll buy a server farm or two. And I’ve seen TM crash and its not pretty.

Granted I have pretty good luck on there, it’s not the point. Don’t get me started on the bots that brokers have.

Just a tip for people who don’t get the tix they’re hoping for either now or duting the official onsale – if you’re persistent enough you can usually score awesome seats online via TM or LN the day or two or three before the show.

I used to work at the box offices of certain venues in Boston and they would always release a small number of kick-ass seats in the days and even hours before the show. They block off some of the best seats in the house for friends and family of the band as well as press. What I’m assuming then happens is the band management tells the venue (or ticket company?) that “x” amount of people will be actually making it to the show in that section. Any surplus seats will be released and sold back to the public.

It requires alot of time to sit at the computer, which I think many of us do at work already. My wife and I did that this past summer, scored 5th row center at Mansfield and 13th row at Merriweather…

Just an idea when all else is lost.

  5. Mitch Says:

    Kenny,
My girl got a nice looking stub for jones and it happened to be VIP and the lady at the show tore a piece off of it. Then at SPAC we got drenched and mine were soaked too. The girl at the gorge tore my ticket since they are back in 1980 still without scanners. Better yet, she was an idiot and just tore it at random, not on the edge and the front of the ticket peeled off when she did it.

I know its not the end of the world but I like to keep my stubs and I like PTBM stubs even more. Here’s to good luck getting cool ones for fall.

  6. Kenny Powers Says:

I’m kicking myself for not saving all my stubs over the years…would be nice mementos to stick in the CD sleeves of the AUDs. I think I still have the stub for my first show (7.8.94) but the ink had virtually faded away…ho hum.

  7. HarryHood Says:

    @ Mitch

I hear you, and I’m not defending TM. I’m just saying that as far as having any hope of getting tickets, I would rather use TM than LN or Tix.com.

man i loved this hampton show. the weekapaug > buffalo bill > weekapaug was an early christmas present!!!!

  10. AbePhroman Says:

    12/18/99 WAS THE SHIZNIT.

The 2001 with the Frampton teases rocks.

    “On the keyboards, Bob Mayonaise!”

  11. Mitch Says:

So did someone say that Chalkdustin was a girl? The name really throws people off.

  12. Leo Weaver Says:

I think she confirmed it Mitch…and fromthetub was representin’ the ladies as well

  13. Neemor Says:

Ghost is a funny tune for me.
I never see it coming until it’s started to gather itself together out of the ooze and I’m always amped to hear it make it’s appearance.
    Similar to Melt or Slave.
Maybe it’s the time signatures, but it always sounds effed up when it starts. The staccato way that they lyrically set up the impending Ghost never sounds like it makes any sense, always sounds like they’re making it up along the way and usually they stumble along for the intro.
But once it settles in, after Jon hits the usual drum signature, ti’s almost always a party!
If I could lend my $.02, don’t overlook the 2/26/03 Ghost>Low Rider as one of the funkiest jams ever. I was front row and it singed my eye brows right off.

  14. BTB Says:

I keep the 20th anniversary tix stub in my wallet at all times.

First show in 98′ has no print on it at all anymore – just a little blue and white piece of paper.

  15. Mitch Says:

Leo, I missed that. I always thought she was a dude cause of the “dustin” part. Thats good then, break up the boys club. Ratio seems about right compared to at shows.

    1000 dudes 2 ladies.

Was it SOAM that made the Mound reference back around Fenway? I’d like to get that quote.

  16. Chalkdustin Says:

^^Yeah, sorry about that. Someone pointed that out to me a while ago, but I wasn’t about to change it.

chalkdustin (verb): to live like there’s no tomorrow.

  17. fat bastard Says:

AW- welcome back….your going to indio right? im flying from chi to palm springs on thurs 10:05>12:05 sumo’s on that flight too.

  18. Leo Weaver Says:

I’m with you Neemor…it usually takes me a few seconds. I’d been talking with the guy next to me about a big Twist in Asheville…they went into ghost and we both gave the ol’ “Hell yeah…there it is…TWIST baby!” Then we realized at the same time it wasn’t twist and gave the ol’ “Hell yeah…there it is…GHOST!”

Mitch…I think the confirmation post showed up out of order or something…I didn’t see it until I accidentally backed up an extra page last night. And yea, the ratio is about right! Mound references during the summer were great…

  19. Mitch Says:

I think it was something like “too many meatsticks, not enough mounds”

Thats prob why I missed it last night.

I get it now, verbage. The act of chalkdusting

  20. HarryHood Says:

    @ Neemor

I’ll second that 2/26/03 Ghost. I was about 9 rows behind you and I could smell your eyebrows burning.

  21. albert walker Says:

I gotta work half day Thursday
flying out of Chi late afternoon
looking forward to chillin with ya’ll on the left coast
can’t beat it during harvest season

    need a vacation!

  22. HarryHood Says:

Harvest season = Hippie Xmas. The shit in the Northeast right now is crazy good.

  23. bhizzle Says:

just checked my cc and got charged by Phish tix enough for four tix.

I asked for four for cuse & both nights in albany. do you think they’d give me four for one or some weird combo of tix and dates (which I highly doubt, but had to ask)?

  24. HarryHood Says:

I think that you are going to have to know someone who knows someone who robbed someone to get into that Cuse show.

  25. Bipsy Says:

I’ve really NOT been enjoying the audio posts as of late: I don’t come to your site to grab a mixtape. I come to your site to read your interesting analysis. Enough of this nonsense.
