The Final 8 ?

WARNING! :: This post contains spoilers about the set-up of Festival 8!

Picture 1As Indio is less than a week away, a leaked copy of an overall schematic for Festival 8 titled “Battle Plan” hit the internet this week, uncovering some potentially revealing details about The Halloween Set. In the festival site, there are eight campgrounds, each named after one of the potential musical costumes. Conventional wisdom would say that these campground names will be the final eight albums left alive. The campground names are:

Exile on Main Street (Rolling Stones)
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (Genesis)
Hunky Dory (David Bowie)
Electric Ladyland (Jimi Hendrix)
Purple Rain (Prince)
Kid A (Radiohead)
Larks’ Tongues In Aspic (King Crimson)
Oracular Spectacular (MGMT, Rumored, not visible on map)

6.6.09 (G.Lucas)

6.6.09 (G.Lucas)

Now there are multiple ways to interpret this information. The first, and most obvious, way to make sense of these campground names is that Phish will play one of these eight albums. In this scenario, all other albums should be “killed off” by the time we head into Indio. Maybe there will be a process of elimination at the festival to get down to the last album alive, maybe we’ll get “Phishbills” as we walk in on the 31st and maybe the band will just get on stage and begin one of these records – who knows?

The second going theory is that there is a secret 100th album that has been “murdering” all the other records in the gallery. In this hypothesis, the entire elimination process has been a decoy, and Phish will solve the “Who Dun It?” mystery by playing the “murdering” suspect – widely conjectured to be The Rolling Stones’ appropriately named “Let It Bleed.” This scenario would certainly fit Phish’s prankster spirit and provide the “Trick” in the holiday’s “Trick or Treat” tradition.

6.4.09 (W.Rogell)

A third way of looking at the leak of these campground names is to call their bluff; this could be all bunk information to mislead us to the very end. Everyone will listen to these eight albums at their campsites to make sure they are familiar with them, and then Phish will come on stage and play “Thriller” or “Ziggy Stardust,” or something different altogether. I certainly wouldn’t put it past the band to have led us on a month-long wild-goose chase while they sat behind the scenes and laughed while rehearsing something else.

phishpumpkin-300x240It’s hard to believe that the band will conclude this album elimination game without any twists or turns – this is Phish after all. With the spirit of Halloween trickery in the air, and with a band known to fuck with their fan base, the only thing to expect is the unexpected. I, personally, believe there is a missing piece that has yet to be revealed.

A bit about the potential Final 8. Noticeably absent from the campground titles is many fans’ favorite, “Ziggy Stardust.” Again, these name may have no predictive value whatsoever, but if they do, the band has opted for “Hunky Dory,” a more mellow, lyrically-based Bowie album that wouldn’t seem to fit for a Halloween blowout. “Larks ‘ Tongues” has awesome potential, though I suspect it would lose the interest of many fans not familiar with King Crimson. Radiohead? MGMT? They just don’t seem to fit, but could push the band in completely different directions. If this really is the final eight, it leads me to think they will play “Exile” “Electric Ladyland” or “Purple Rain.” But, again, who knows?! The questions  and theories will continue to flow until the answer is revealed, and, in the meantime, all we can do is keep guessing!

Back in 1994, the band was on the road leading up to Halloween, and this night this night in South Carolina marked their second-to-last show before they debuted The White Album. Along the path of a momentum-building tour, this show was no exception. The second set sequence of  “2001 > Bowie > Manteca > Bowie” highlights a well-played show. PS : The Audio Archive is well on its way!

good stuff mr miner. I agree phish will probably add a twist. i enjoy reading you every day. THANK YOU MR. MINER!

  2. Mugician Says:

Miner, as usual, reading your blog gets me all fired up. I’m so stoked to get out there. There’s so much to do, I kind of wish I didn’t have to work!

  3. Leo Weaver Says:

beep…re: sun tunnels, I’ll let you know…would love to talk to you some more about all that stuff in the not-to-distant future. Probably gonna do the reno in another year or so.

  4. Mitch Says:

you coming to MSG or what? Either way, on sale is at 11. I need 2 for Friday if you wanna help.

  5. Don Barto Says:

It seems to me that if the campsite names will be of the albums listed, as leaked, then Phish would probably not play ANY of those albums, but rather a different one (either from those remaining, minus the camgroung-named ones, or a mystery album).

  6. Stir it with a Ladle Says:

Great Post today Miner, everyone getting ready for FEIGHT? I agree that they will play something that is not on the list and I have heard “Let it Bleed.” My thoughts on the matter are thats it’s a great album by the Stones but there are many other albms that would drive the band in a new direction but lets be honest, anything will be remarkable. Just being with the boys on halloween night again and in ’09, that is what is amazing to me. Can’t wait to see the bad lieutenant grinning ear to ear on stage, see yall in Indio.

  7. Leo Weaver Says:

Still trying to make it…gonna be tough with the funds shortage right now though (just had to buy a new heat exchanger for the ol’ HVAC…and gotta pay an architect’s bill). I’ll be on a plane at 11, so have a couple of folks at the office trying the tix for me (2 for each MSG and C’ville, I’ll only need 1 to each if I score). If I don’t make it up for MSG, I’ll be up there before too long…gotta go visit big sis. Haven’t been up there since the Radio City and Roseland shows in ’00…way past due! Thanks for the postcard BTW…got it up on the fridge.

    re: ticketmaster numbers:

Ignore those numbers I posted. I found an old list that I used to use but apparently these numbers have all been disconnected and there is only one TM number now – 800.745.3000

    News to me…

  10. beepaphone Says:

Never tried to score tickets via phone…better potential than online?/how does it work?/ any tricks of the phone trade to learn about?

    I’m spazzing this ticketmorning

  11. Leo Weaver Says:

yet another way they can control the flow of tix…bastards

  12. Kenny Powers Says:

trying to score tix online (guessing phone too, i can’t deal with that) is a total pain in the ass. everyone and their mother will try to get on starting five minutes early and for the next 20-30 minutes. Either the server will crash or no one will be able to get through.

I think it was the Fenway show where Live Nation’s server crashed or something, no one could seem to get on. Then apparently about 25 minutes into the onsale window people must have given up because my wife and i suddenly got through a couple of times in a span of five minutes.

Basically you gotta have time, patience, and the ability to hog a computer and not have to do work.

  13. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

okay so another thing anyone headed to *8* needs to check out are some of the other things on the leaked map, notably “Burble” and “Borealis”. Beepaphone posted some links last night (page 16 of the comments) and I think there are some more links on the facebook page.

my initial thought with both of these was that these have the potential to be mind blowing visual experiences. I can’t wait to see what happens when the phish crowd has the chance to interact with these installations and to *really* take them out for a ride. I’m envisioning drum circles and group hoots and whatnot to get these things really cranking. you gotta coordinate, people!

  14. cal Says:

Personally, I doubt they’ll play any of the eight “leaked” albums…but I do think LARK’S TONGUE would be perfect. They’ve jammed on it before, and I don’t think it’s any more obscure than REMAIN IN LIGHT…did anybody “lose interest” during that set? Out of those eight choices, I’d take the Crimson hands down; not too much difficult singing, TONS of glorious improv potential, and creepy as all hell.

  15. Kenny Powers Says:

speaking of how cool the festival site is shaping up to be, in a way i’m almost wishing i was camping there so i could make the absolute most of it. y’know, like if there’s impromptu wackiness going on at all hours of the night after i’ve bolted for the hotel.

but my ass has become pampered and cranky since the camping days of old. i need darnkess and quiet (with a bit of white noise, like the fan of an A/C unit) to sleep soundly, and i’m gonna need that sleep to be sound if i’m gonna be able to rage it full force the rest of the time.

  16. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

Is it only me or is there a brief “Seven Below” type jam at about 13-14 minutes into the JOTD? I realize this is like 8 years before that became a flicker in their eyes, but I swear I heard it…

  17. BTB Says:

On-line we just go to the website and click buy tickets right? Which is better TM or LN?

  18. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

Kenny, in the immortal words of Warren Zevon, I’ll sleep when I’m dead!

  19. HarryHood Says:

Historically, Ticketmaster is the least likely to crash, but the most likely to eat it’s young.

  20. fat bastard Says:

beep- nice find on the light trippy things, whatever they’re called. im re-naming them in your honor.

  21. Kenny Powers Says:

“Which is better TM or LN?” – i think every show is either/or, right?

    LOL @ type III

i gave up on psychedelics long ago, but maybe i’ll slowly chew on just enough Cali fungus to keep me awake till the wee hours. nothing sucks more than beer/ganga fatigue when the party’s still raging.

  22. beepaphone Says:

I’ve heard LN is more likely to crash

  23. beepaphone Says:

    lol@ harryhood

  24. Mitch Says:

So far I may have a thursday night for you. Ill be trying for extra fridays today too.

  25. beepaphone Says:

@ fb thanks its an honor.

Sitting in a booth right now trying to represent my company at this community planner’s conference…
