The Final 8 ?

WARNING! :: This post contains spoilers about the set-up of Festival 8!

Picture 1As Indio is less than a week away, a leaked copy of an overall schematic for Festival 8 titled “Battle Plan” hit the internet this week, uncovering some potentially revealing details about The Halloween Set. In the festival site, there are eight campgrounds, each named after one of the potential musical costumes. Conventional wisdom would say that these campground names will be the final eight albums left alive. The campground names are:

Exile on Main Street (Rolling Stones)
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (Genesis)
Hunky Dory (David Bowie)
Electric Ladyland (Jimi Hendrix)
Purple Rain (Prince)
Kid A (Radiohead)
Larks’ Tongues In Aspic (King Crimson)
Oracular Spectacular (MGMT, Rumored, not visible on map)

6.6.09 (G.Lucas)

Now there are multiple ways to interpret this information. The first, and most obvious, way to make sense of these campground names is that Phish will play one of these eight albums. In this scenario, all other albums should be “killed off” by the time we head into Indio. Maybe there will be a process of elimination at the festival to get down to the last album alive, maybe we’ll get “Phishbills” as we walk in on the 31st and maybe the band will just get on stage and begin one of these records – who knows?

The second going theory is that there is a secret 100th album that has been “murdering” all the other records in the gallery. In this hypothesis, the entire elimination process has been a decoy, and Phish will solve the “Who Dun It?” mystery by playing the “murdering” suspect – widely conjectured to be The Rolling Stones’ appropriately named “Let It Bleed.” This scenario would certainly fit Phish’s prankster spirit and provide the “Trick” in the holiday’s “Trick or Treat” tradition.

6.4.09 (W.Rogell)

A third way of looking at the leak of these campground names is to call their bluff; this could be all bunk information to mislead us to the very end. Everyone will listen to these eight albums at their campsites to make sure they are familiar with them, and then Phish will come on stage and play “Thriller” or “Ziggy Stardust,” or something different altogether. I certainly wouldn’t put it past the band to have led us on a month-long wild-goose chase while they sat behind the scenes and laughed while rehearsing something else.

phishpumpkin-300x240It’s hard to believe that the band will conclude this album elimination game without any twists or turns – this is Phish after all. With the spirit of Halloween trickery in the air, and with a band known to fuck with their fan base, the only thing to expect is the unexpected. I, personally, believe there is a missing piece that has yet to be revealed.

A bit about the potential Final 8. Noticeably absent from the campground titles is many fans’ favorite, “Ziggy Stardust.” Again, these name may have no predictive value whatsoever, but if they do, the band has opted for “Hunky Dory,” a more mellow, lyrically-based Bowie album that wouldn’t seem to fit for a Halloween blowout. “Larks ‘ Tongues” has awesome potential, though I suspect it would lose the interest of many fans not familiar with King Crimson. Radiohead? MGMT? They just don’t seem to fit, but could push the band in completely different directions. If this really is the final eight, it leads me to think they will play “Exile” “Electric Ladyland” or “Purple Rain.” But, again, who knows?! The questions  and theories will continue to flow until the answer is revealed, and, in the meantime, all we can do is keep guessing!

Back in 1994, the band was on the road leading up to Halloween, and this night this night in South Carolina marked their second-to-last show before they debuted The White Album. Along the path of a momentum-building tour, this show was no exception. The second set sequence of  “2001 > Bowie > Manteca > Bowie” highlights a well-played show. PS : The Audio Archive is well on its way!

I: I Didn’t Know, Llama, Guelah Papyrus, Scent of a Mule, Stash, Glide, Axilla (Part II), All Things Reconsidered, Sample in a Jar, Carolina

II: Also Sprach Zarathustra > David Bowie -> Manteca -> David Bowie, The Lizards, Peaches en Regalia, Rift, Lifeboy, Chalk Dust Torture, The Old Home Place*, Nellie Kane*, Foreplay/Long Time

E: Fee, Highway to Hell

    TYPE III

    1) Do you want to do it everyday? Best set list of the week? Think that over and I will do the same. I’ll go ahead and make you an administrator, that way you can figure something out. Cool?

    2) ROBEAR – I’ll make you an administrator – post the OASIS info under “create event”.

  3. Mitch Says:

GASP! Miner is gonna be up top with the rest of us!! I’ll keep my ears open. there are a bunch of tix floating around waiting to settle back down. People are still in a tizzy about what they need. I think after tomorrow it will relax a bit.

Who’s got my Fri MSG for a Thur MSG??

    Also need singles to Philly.

  4. Robear Says:

Allright, today’s not a complete loss. My friend scored three nights MSG, so I have my ticket stub to move around with. Now for some Portland access.

Mr. C, regarding Alchemy. We were discussing a show, 12/17/99 where the CROWD brought too much heat for the ideal ‘reaction’. I love your explanation, so simple, yet so complex.

  5. Mitch Says:

Robear, You gonna be partying and not working MSG??

  6. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

morecowbell, I was referring to Running with the Devil (8-6-98). Hot for Teacher is on 1984 (which would have been an awesome cover choice IMO)

BTB, that works for me. Not sure on the frequency yet (at some point there will be a day or ten that I’ll need someone else to give it a go if the interest is there). I’ll figure it out for today’s setlist…

i didn’t realize that ‘cuse had only been played at once before (11.4.94). makes that one even more special. smallest room of tour. predicting more old-school song selection and/or bustouts at that show.

also, the band is bookending the tour with venues they haven’t played before. starting at an older venue (cobo) and finishing in a newer one (jpj).

wondering what kind of MSG hangover JPJ may experience. tour closer and all, but fourth night in a row and a saturday show. (friday nights are better i’ve come to discover). regardless, i will be in attendance.

cccc is my pick for sleeper show of tour. very stoked for that one. some serious phistory in that place.

getting ahead of myself though … there’s a festival in less than a week! !!!!!!!

re: Oasis. Yeah, whatever I can do to make us easier to find. I’ll be rolling into the Polo fields on Wednesday morning. I can use the on-site wireless to post updates. For some reason, I can’t get on my facebook, though. I’ll try again today.

re: Avatar- Do you guys see a picture of a river, or a CK5 spread? I cannot get my home computer to clear itself and show the new avatar (should be the river picture).

Wow, a week until new music. These guys rock. and roll.

I had dreams of a better, more just world. Dreams that were somewhat born, and surely grew on tour. Real Hope. Then, let’s face it, those dreams have been shattered by the relentless pursuit of power and greed. Thank goodness Phish is back, bringing a bit of hope and dreams and a sense of community back to this mixed up planet. A mobile meeting point for our tribe. The work is more important now than ever? Phish carries an enormous responsibility. They have the key to that timeless, endless space, where everything is all right. I, for one, am sorry if I ever doubted their place or purpose, or felt they owed me anything.

The forecast calls for Solar Tokes at the ‘Oasis’.

Funny story re:van halen – I met David Lee Roth and the bass player for Van Halen on the 1984 tour, it was during the summer, so I don’t know if it was ’84 or ’85. I was 10 or so at the time. I was out on the lake with a neighbor girl (total hottie, admittedly only like 15 at the time, but hey I was 10!). Anyway, girl runs the boat aground in the mud, and is standing there waving her arms in a bikini. Low and behold, a boat pulls up to see what the problem is and its Diamond Dave himself along with bass player dude out waterskiing before they played a concert in Indy that night. They were pretty nice dudes, and very flirtatious with the girl, until she revealed her age….then only Dave continued to be flirtatious.

  10. BTB Says:

    Robear, what’s you name????

  11. Robear Says:

Mitch, I’ll be working the Waterwheel during MSG. I’m one of the low totem minions that just rows the boat. I get to catch most of the show. It’s nice to have a ‘ticket’ even just a copy of a ticket, because we don’t get any credentials or passes or anything. Just a foot in the door. Some places it works fine, cool staff, easy to Jedi. Some places, not so great.

  12. Robear Says:

    ^btb,

    Robert Gale

  13. BTB Says:

Cool – your an administrator now, you can make the event and update it

  14. Robear Says:

gp, phrickin’ phunny. Diamond Dave was “Hot for Student”

  15. Ocelot42 Says:

Robear, your avatar is only the river, it’s only the river.

  16. BTB Says:

ROBEAR – did you join the FB group? I can make you an admin if you do

  17. BTB Says:

Ocelot – I’ll be a Cobo, although not sure if i can leave work early. I’ll get back to you on that.

  18. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

BTB, your description of me as an officer is remarkably spot on for me at shows. Lately though I’ve been using a Hampton 2009 pen. Fits perfectly in the spiral edge of my book… 8)

  19. GuitarPicker420! Says:

Hot for a freaking freshman in High School!

  20. BTB Says:

    I figured….

  21. Robear Says:

    “Hot for teener”

Being from Michigan, I have seen some stunner’s in bikini’s on the inland lakes. Indiana, probably even better.

Found faceplace group and linked up.

diamond dave was hot for jailbait 🙂

  23. msbjivein Says:

FFA chicks all over downtown INDY if you’re into Jailbait…………Nothing beats a young farm girl………….LOL!!!

  24. Selector J Says:

Wasn’t trying for tickets today but it seems things are a little less FTW than the last few TM/LN feeding frenzies. Hope everyone gets what they need.

As far as Halloween albums go…

Idon’t know if anyone’s mentioned this (I’ve only been skimming comments lately) but did anyone hear about the Emerson Lake and Palmer- Pictures At An Exhibition as 100th album theory? It started as a Phantasy Tour thread and was mentioned on jamtopia, too. Fun theory even if it’s a little far-fetched (though “nearer-fetched” than the Let It Bleed Theory, imo).

  25. BrandonKayda Says:

    ^HAHA (to “hot for jailbait”)

I hope Phish is just messing with us and everything that they are doing is a scheme to divert our attention of the real album they are playing. I am not even going, but I just hate that the possible surprise is now taken out of 8. Hopefully it isn’t true, that’s all I’m hoping for.
