Returning From The Desert

Festival 8 (A.Lansing)

Festival 8 (A.Lansing)

I just got out of the festival where I was relying on a communal, camp wireless card the entire weekend. Gotta deal with the RV and drive up north tomorrow, and I should be getting back to regular posting by later this week. And boy is there a lot to say! Sunday’s night’s show easily vaulted to the top shelf of 3.0 offerings with a second set chock-full of chunky dance grooves and a whole lot more. We will be looking at Phish’s eighth festival from all sorts of angles…when I get home!

    Interesting TV program on tonight:

Watch “Inside LSD” on National Geographic TV (November 3, 2009 @ 10 PM)

On Tuesday, November 3 at 10 PM et/pt, National Geographic will debut its newest television special about psychedelics. “Inside LSD” will air as part of the television series “Explorer.”

The shows producers consulted with MAPS Executive Director Rick Doblin, Ph.D., among other experts, in order to create the show. The documentary features interviews with numerous colleagues in the field of psychedelic research, including pioneering psilocybin researcher Charles Grob, M.D. One of the highlights of the show is a segment about an underground psychedelic therapist who administered LSD to a client. Another segment is about cluster headache research with psychedelics that MAPS helped to start at Harvard Medical School.

FYI: The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is a membership-based, IRS-approved 501 (c) (3) non-profit research and educational organization. MAPS’s mission is to develop MDMA, LSD, psilocybin, and marijuana into legal prescription medicines for therapeutic applications.

“I saw a few undercovers, but it looked like they were only chasing nitrous.”

That’s pretty much all they seemed to care about. Dude set up a tank behind my neighbor’s car on Friday and they shut him down real quick, but that was the only “busting” I witnessed all weekend. Security was letting anyone with a festival ticket in-and-out of the campgrounds and they didn’t pat me down once going into the festival area. Yet I felt like it was the most behaved festival crowd I’ve ever seen. So carefree and stoked! Didn’t feel any bad vibes all weekend.

thanks for the info sumodie. I’ll watch that. Never seen a TV thing on psychedelics with peeps that knew what they were talking about

east coast summer fest / so cal winter fest is not a bad idea at all

  4. Mr. Completely Says:

problem is making it special enough

the creativity and attention to detail

2x a year might dilute all that too much

  5. beepaphone Says:

@ Sumodie thanks…now I have a plan for the evening

1 fest per year average is beyond good enough for me. Would like DC to get some more 3 night stand love though, but that could just be the Indiana bias of course.

  6. snowbank Says:

Indio Police Sgt. Ben Guitron said there were nine drug-related arrests Sunday and a little more traffic congestion than Saturday. But overall, he said, “It’s worked out very well. Obviously, the arrests have been narcotics related, but it’s been pretty good. The traffic has been really great.”

nine arrests on sunday! wow. That is less than the daily average at Coachella. I think they realize they want to confiscate drugs and keep arrests at a minimum. Too many arrests and it scares the community, too few and it is obvious they are not enforcing laws.

  7. halcyon Says:

Mr C … the links to the 10-30 show you posted the other day .. were they from livephish or sirius?

  8. wvbrdr Says:

Mr C and snowbank, Seattle has the poorest planned transportation infrastructure ive ever seen. i have to navigate it every day.

regarding west coast fests, you can almost throw the gorge into that category, with the onsite camping, multiple nights, festival sized shakedown raging at all hours…

  9. sumodie Says:

Yes, two festivals a year is probably too much. I could easily handle a yearly rotation between Limestone, Big Cypress, and Indio.

I cannot stress enough how much energy and effort (and love) Phish and its associated staff put into F8. The band shined all weekend, and we gave it right back to them.

just got the hoties booked for Miami

nice to see you too 420
thought with all the Cardinals gear had to be you

got plenty of shows in the future to have some more market chat

glad you stumbled across some heads that morning

    Miami

Are folks feeling brave enough to purchase their flights? I would agree that the David Bowie ad in the Phish Bill from Saturday was practically a full blown announcement, but still…

  12. She Divides Says:

@ Phish…Yup glad you like the koozies (coozies?–is this a regional difference?) We had an awesome time making them, selling them, and enjoying them–but I’m also a bit koozie obsessed…

We saw a couple different disc golf baskets at F8 which was pretty cool!
We were in Kid A–arrived at LAX at 12:45am thursday night, hit the 24 hour wallmart for supplies, then drove out to Indio–arriving around 6 (I think) friday am–by the time we had our tents set up the sun was up and we were too excited to sleep as was everyone around us so partying ensued.

Security wise there was no line when we arrived and our cars got a serious search, but we managed to get through with a couple bottles of liqour. Around us glass bottles seemed to be the main thing security was looking for in the campsites. We were also out vending when undercover cops ran by us shouting “taze him” at the time it was pretty jarring and seemed over the top, but I guess it could have been the stabber…

  13. butter Says:

yes, i bought my flights, this is the vip announcement ….book it dano

  14. Mitch Says:

I just found out Marge is in this months playboy. Has anyone seen this. Marge Simpson if I really have to be more clear than just marge. I feel like we all grew up with her and are on a first name basis.

  15. snigglebeach Says:

The gigs are good as gold in Miami, but tiks are not going to be automatic. If you book the flights, u better hit the lotto, or be ready to pay whatever it takes to get in. I guess there are usually tiks available down in miami, but i personally never feel comforatable until the ticket is in my hand.

  16. Mr. Completely Says:

@halcyon, those were from Sirius, was just trying to get something up quickly, and seeing if it was easily doable. I strongly recommend the MkV FOBs on etree FWIW.

@sumodie, if we were going, I would have already booked flights and rooms. Definitely. I think that counts as an announcement.

We camped in Electric Ladyland- Undercovers popped two guy a few cars over for selling weed- It appears they were asking people as they walked by if they wanted to purchase. Not sure it was the best move to ask the buzz-cut guys in AC/DC shirts… A few tanks went down as well, but a few managed to last for some time 😉

  18. Mr. Completely Says:

there were naked pics of Marge Simpson on the internet by 1995 at the latest. One of the first examples of Rule 34. Print magazines 15 years behind, sounds about right.

    Wow.

Think of it as evolution in action.

  20. Mr. Completely Says:

…if you don’t know what Rule 34 is, do NOT google it. I warned you.

  21. Mitch Says:

Also I’m finally reading “this is your brain on music” and I know some of you said it was awesome. I just hope it’s not all like the introduction. It’s reading like a text book.

  22. snigglebeach Says:

Anyone know what the official numbers were for attendance at 8??

    Just curious..

  23. Selector J Says:

    re: stabbing at 8

There’s a video of the arrest of the stabbing guy on youtube. The victim of the alleged stabbing is standing there watching the dude get taken in to custody. Makes you wonder if there’s another, less severe word for ‘to attack with a knife.’ The crazy thing is that it’s during the acoustic Curtain With and there are all kinds of people walking around (not involved with the incident) oblivious to the holy spectacle they could be witnessing.

re: phish women’s group in local paper at 8

Cool write up about the jam girlz. My wife is a JG and knows the people in the article.

  24. Mitch Says:

I remember seeing Marge naked prob 12-15 years ago. Just saying it’s in playboy. That’s funny to me. Guess the inet is cutting into their porn sales so they had to get Marge for gimmick appeal. Guess the articles aren’t to appealing after all. 😉

glad I read your warning before searching rule 34 butthen again I really wanna search now. What gives?

  25. BingosBrother Says:

@sniggle : Marge is fine as hell, but I also think of Large Marge from Pee-Wee’s when I hear that name. Wonder if Pee Wee got the new Playboy? Just don’t bring it to the theater Pee Wee!
