    Funny, I’ve had it in my head this way for years but a quick check reveals it was 10-29-88 when they played in the Sculpture Room at Goddard College that year – I’d swear the show lasted 6 or 7 hours. Was there again a year later on Halloween w/the macaroni boxes and Trey wearing an agressive set of plastic t*ts with a chain btween the nips as his costume… By that point the venue was moved to the much larger Art Barn building and there was a muddy snowy SCENE outside!

    @Bingos – thanks! That was an awesome random occurrence helping Mike with the tape covers in The Front! We must have assembled about 100 cassettes. It wasn’t like I was a personal friend of the band, but the circles were small in Burlington and we all had a very good time! It was a tape release party that night and i remember the line “In case anyone was wondering, Junta has no meaning in Nicaragua” being interjected at some point in the show. Miner posted an ’89 Front show recently with the Reba debut and made me remember everybody laughing as they played the new song because tall hairy man Tom Baggot (cue “bag it, tag it”) was dancing and grinning from ear to ear. Other Front debuts of note: Split and Mango come to mind. Tha Mango Song included “dancing instructions” complete with a demonstration from an audience member in the know.

    @stitchstash – I never heard the Wall of Sound of course. The Meyer PAs the dead used in my era were staggeringly loud and clear. So is the Phish PA most of the time. In terms of the actual PA quality I would say they are approximately equal.

    However IMO Dan Healy was a better mixer most of the time than Paul is/was. This may or may not be a controversial statement, but such has been my experience. Dan was a little better at getting a really even mix that carried a lot of well defined bass throughout most or all of the room (most of the time, there were bad rooms and off nights of course). And also at not losing definition in the midrange as the guitars drown out the keyboards.

    Also he was a little more accomplished at pushing sound to all corners of a very big room (or stadium). As a result of both those factors, it has been a little more rare in my experience for Phish to really be quite as loud as they could be across the entire spectrum.

    When Phish has it dialed in, it sounds so close to perfect that any comparison would be splitting ridiculously small hairs. They just don’t have it dialed in quite as high a percentage of the time as I remember from dead tour.

    Bottom line, they’re really close. Could be my hearing, it still tests very well but I’m sure it’s taken some hits over the years.

    @Tyler. If you can send me a plane ticket, I’ll sneak some stuff in for you πŸ™‚ jk. Thanks for the videos, didn’t realize you comment here. I spent about 3 hours the other day looking through your work. I’m very impressed. I got my SLR in (and a packpack full of beers) only because I was working production. I know it’s not fun filming the shows and not being able to dance, but it must be rewarding in the end. Thanks again for your effort.

    @KWL – The June ’76 tour has a particular, very laid-back vibe that only fits a narrow spectrum of mood for me – and it’s a mood in which I often turn to JGB instead. However there are some beautiful shows and unique song performances. I like later in the year better, from September and October, but there are actually still a lot of shows from that run I’ve never heard. They’re on the agenda. There’s some really beautiful playing in ’76 for sure. I always think of songs like Crazy Fingers…

    @Ramblin, the GD 1970 Project is sitting mostly untouched yet on my HD. It’s up after fall Phish tour, I’ll be through the ’74 Project as well. 1970 was a weird, very uneven transitional year for the band but the best shows are among their very finest. I especially am looking forward to a bunch of shows I’ve never heard from later in the year.

    That 8 jams mix works really well. You can even crossfade easily from the Piper jam to Ghost and then from Ghost to Mike’s and it just works. However doing that points out how much better 10/31 and 11/1 are in this MkV FOB (z-man) source than 10/30 is. The Friday pull is much more muffled sounding.

    Has anyone heard a better recording of 10/30 yet? Or was it reflective of the sound?

    Thanks for the stories Fatbunch. It’s an honor to hear it first hand from an old Phan. I had the pleasure of meeting Fish, Mike and Page in the cattering tent @ F8 a few times. Probably 100 people in there, mostly Goldenvoice peeps, and not one person knew who they where. I’ve never been star struct before and I work around a lot of famous people, but I was choking over my words when talking to Fish. I felt so bad asking his wife to take a picture of us and appologized for making what could of been a scene, but they where cool about it. In fact, they had to be so stoked that they could cruise around and not get hasseled by fans. Got to love the West Coast for that.

    @Mr. C – what do you mean the 1970 project is up after fall tour? Up as in no longer available, or up as in you’ll be posting them somewhere? Haven’t quite figured out these projects. I searched for them but ended up on some page with like 8 sources of single shows with all sorts of gibberish (i.e. things people who work with computers know).

    Also, I’m not sure if I’m remembering something from earlier in the week or if it was the weekend, but we were talking about introducing people to Phish. 11/17/97 and Slip Stitch and Pass were mentioned. Slip is probably the better of the two because there’s a ton of jamming on 11/17 and it might be overwhelming. Also, I think the group groove kind of improv is more difficult to “get” than the kinds of jams with wailing guitar and keyboard solos. I wanted to throw Farmhouse into the mix. It’s not something I listen to, but chicks seem to dig it. A lot of people in college who had heard of Phish but didn’t really know them would have a couple album tracks on their computer, especially “Farmhouse” the song. It might not turn them into someone who wants to dissect every song, but they might be willing to catch a show or two with you and then who knows? Maybe they’ll dig it. But yeah, this is an observation I’ve only made about girls. And we could certainly use more girls on the scene.

    Do I recall you mentioning being a Brown alum? We you there around β€˜88-92 by chance and if so do you remember a phish-like band called Omar Sayeed Quintet?

    @Fatbunch: I graduated Brown in ’92 and do remember the Omar Sayeed Quintet. However, I can’t recall what they sounded like -were you in that band?

    To my regret, I didn’t get into Phish until the summer of 1992, so I missed the infamous Phish show at Brown that got cut short due to a stupid curfew (2/1/91). Still remember seeing the show poster on the wall of my fraternity.

    Was there again a year later on Halloween w/the macaroni boxes and Trey wearing an agressive set of plastic t*ts with a chain btween the nips as his costume… By that point the venue was moved to the much larger Art Barn building and there was a muddy snowy SCENE outside!

    Cool beans! I found that show online (10/31/89 Goddard College) recently (at pt?) and read an article about it with a pic of Trey wearing that top. Thanks for sharing the stories.

    Also, I’d never trade my 90’s phish for 80’s dead. I love the depth and continuity I’ve been able to forge with Phish these past 18 years. If it was 60s-70s Dead, well, then I’d have to think about it πŸ™‚

    @Ramblin – re: 1970 project: I mean, I grabbed it from etree, and it is sitting on a hard drive, just a ton of FLAC files. I will decode and listen to them soon, but first I have to finish dealing with the 1974 project and the upcoming fall Phish tour.

    Dealing with the Project torrents is confusing at first. They’re huge and usually at least half redundant. But if you’re used to dealing with torrents in general, you can just uncheck all the sources you don’t need. I can walk you through that if you’re interested, it’s not hard to figure out what source to pick. FWIW I am seeding 1970 Project #6 through #9 now and will keep em up for a while.

    2 more thoughts on 5.8.77

    One: At the time, the sound quality was just killin’ on this tape as it circulated, no doubt making it or helping it become the famed show it was. I turned that one up a lot as I drove to and fro to hs back in the day.

    Two: My (now) wife was born on that day, in Germany…Clearly, this is why the GD played so beautifully.

    Thanks guys. Never posted here, but I’ve definitely come across Mr Miner’s No Spoilers downloads that were a lot of fun to listen to. Very nice to see some intelligent Phish talk here compared to an infamous Phish board I frequent.

    Shooting at the shows is definitely a mixture of fun and annoyance but it’s totally worth it when I get to work on them in “post” as I usually forget what I shot.

    I’m a bit worried about getting my cam into Philly because my girlfriend won’t be attending those two and I always use her big bag to hide it in since security usually just gives it a quick glance. But if all goes well I’ll have 5 more shows worth of video so stay tuned and be sure to subscribe to my channel!

    i just want to see his face is probably my favorite moment of the whole weekend – Brother Trey layin down The Word – phish gospel is rare, but maybe something we will get more of now with the newly inlaid influence, a la talking heads leading into the funk…

    Julius is the only song I can think of that really brings that jazzy gospelly vibe out of the phish catalog- maybe there is one I am forgetting?

    re: dead eras – 77 has that crystalline sound that almost anyone can get on board with – if you can’t get that, you just don’t like the dead, is kind of how I’ve always thought of it. 71-72 can be that same type of thing, lots of “skeletons from the closet” and mostly accessible music, with the super space craziness isolated to a 30 minute dark star or other one each night.

    73-74 is like the thinking man’s dead to me – such a sublime period for so many tunes (china.rider, eyes, scarlet, playin, come to mind) and some really cool jazzy jamming that comes along.

    I agree mr c with your assessment of 76, some cool versions of certain songs (help.slipknot for one) as they reinvent themselves after the 75 hiatus… on that note, the few shows of 75 are very cool to me, the kezar stadium (blues for allah > stronger than dirt> drumz > stronger than dirt > blues for allah) stands king..

    It’s all about the one drummer dead love, 72-74
    I do love some of the blues heavy more rootsy early 70’s stuff
    Jerry’s playing in the 75 shit is just smoking, starting to see the more fusion, soul of hanging out with Merl coming out. seems to be practicing a bunch of new styles at this point

    I rarely listen to much after 75. I’m def not a huge fan of the more layed back pretty sounding 76 or polished arena rock 77 stuff.
    do dig some of the more funky 79 stuff.

    a wah heavy 74 playin, dark star action is probably the pinnacle of GD for me.
    nimble on one drummer, jerry’s playing starting to branch out in new directions, very open and very tight

I always wondered if Phish was able to match or surpass the sound quality of the Dead and I think you did a great job breaking it down and explaining it to someone who knows very little about this sort of thing.

    @AW : Couldn’t agree more about the one drummer. Remember Jerry saying in an interview that two drummers was like trying to turn a train and one was like a corvette(or something to that effect).

    @Fatbunch : that Baggot dude must have been flippin out! Plus an actual Mango dance? I could get down with that. Page at the end of Mango allows me to feel like I could be an actual musician for a few seconds. Cheers all.

    To drop a little love on the 80s and 90s dead – the thing you get there that you do not get before is the Jerry ballads that ooze with soul – Standin on the Moon, So Many Roads, The Days Between, Wharf Rat – these all became highlights in the later years for me. Something that maybe has very little overlap from the phish world though, as phish ballads are nice, but rarely considered a highlight.

    This may be changing though – hearing trey sing circus, waste, even secret smile takes on a whole different weight right now. I look forward to watching this element of phish evolve as we move forward into the new era of “mature phish” or whatever…. But Trey has a long way to go before he can match the intensity brought by a good post space jerry ballad!

    Also – I’m not sure phish ever really had an “accessible” era that everyone can really agree on, (though albert you shoot a hole in my theory by not liking 77 – the exception that makes the rule?) making their “5/8/77” harder to pin point. Many of the early fans, who enjoyed phish for their tight prog-rock compositions, got turned off by the space odysseys that began, as far back as 93, peaked in 97, and took over by the time the hiatuses came along ..
