just spun the 29th of the Miami 03 shows
I did not see much in 03 and never have really listened to many tapes

    first the Piper is amazing
the unbridled, drug induced jamming is quite amazing

I did notice at times they were all just jamming away with such energy and passion but it seemed to lack overall coherence
either way one of the best Phish jams I’ve every heard

Limb, Piper, and Tube had amazing moments
but in general very bad flubs like the one in FOAM
the only LA Women portion seemed kind of jumbled and sloppy
Anything but me in the first and Wast and a rough Coil to close
just make it an allright show for me

lame to compare dif eras but I really think this 2009 run with how the boys hit their stride lately has the potential to blow that shit out of the water no doubt

  2. ThePigSong Says:

never started that show, the Rock and Roll hall of fame show on HBO sucked me in.

i don’t think its lame to compare different eras

just lame to always think the older eras are automatically better, imho

i agree: 09/10 has potential to blow doors

@AW – hit me to hook up at Hyatt ebutter1 at mac dot com

AW- what did you think of 12/29/03 set II. I spun that today as well and i loved that set. The RnR> Twist> boogie > ghost was sweet. agree with the Waste, Coil however. Rough for sure. Very intriguing time for the band. Such great playing at times, and then barely hanging on for dear life during others. Certainly some hidden gems in there.

  5. ThePigSong Says:

@c0w – do you have a link for that track listing you posted a page ago?

  6. c0wfunk Says:

pig song if you are on what it is there – I don’t have a public link or an invite unfortunately..

@chef – yeah a lot of it is probably white tape . The green dolphin street is pretty cool, I haven’t listened to the rest.

definitely agreed. Piper is bristling with energy and so is limb but it is a little all over the place. Great to hear. Foam is a bit all over the place as you mention. On top of that the first set is only one hour long! I look forward to the second set still haven’t gotten to it.

I think this miami run has the ingredients to be one of the best. 8 days!? Really? *head explodes*

  7. albert walker Says:

    my fault I listened to 1st set 29th 2nd disk 30th and then 2rd disk 29th
have to go back and finish beginning of set II 29th

the Tube > LA women Pfunk night
def not to impressed by it

wow does Trey’s voice sound cashed also
    you can hear the partying

    emailed you my # butter
    get together for sure
getting my travel packages together as we speek

  8. c0wfunk Says:

it’s really interesting the laconic energy of the 28th versus the manic energy of the 29th. Completely different vibe.

  9. albert walker Says:

yeah I knew there were a few jams but that 7 set 1st seemed real short
Wolfman’s and Foam were the two songs I def thought would get better treatments nowadays in 2009

that set was saved by the Piper though
    without not many great moments

  10. sumodie Says:

comparing phish eras using informed observations is great.

blathering on about who’s better who’s best not so great.

agreed miami 09 is likely to exceed 03 in most ways, though 03 is strong on jamming & unpredictability. unpredictability fueled by offstage issues will be hard to beat, but me thinks 09 could top out in the jamming department.

  11. albert walker Says:

    the other stand out notice
Page’s Clav playing has gotten hundreds of times better

he actually plays it more like it is supposed to sound
harder, crisper hits more in the Stevie style

  12. albert walker Says:

after all the praise 2003 is starting to get lately I thought it would be best to give it another spin

still feel the same as I used to

the way the flubs occur and our handled just feels different
there is just a slightly negative overhanging energy you hear in the music

a weird force I can’t put a finger on that detracts from the strength of the sometimes brilliant jams

weird moment in Phish history for certain

but damn that Piper and the energy emoting from it was pure emotional hose
a lot coming out in that one

  13. Mr. Palmer Says:

Although I wasn’t there, the whole P-funk thing doesn’t sound like it really worked very well. Its a one time listen for me. I’ll be skipping over that segment in the future. But, maybe i’m wrong.

  14. sumodie Says:

    phish 1.0 = star wars

    2.0 = empire strikes back

3.0 = return of the jedi (sans ewoks)

no palmer, youre not wrong about the pfunk excursion. but the boys gave it a good shot 8)

  15. beepaphone Says:

    “sans ewoks”

Who all here is in Chicago? Looks like I’ll be moving to Hyde Park in 6 months to a year. I’ll need to do some research on the bands, spots, hangouts, etc.

  18. SillyWilly Says:

Ive just been brushing up on some of my Phish terminology and I just learned that my holy grail of phish would be the infamous TRIPLE NIPPLE

that might be a good tshirt idea

  19. beepaphone Says:

    PYITE too right?

  20. SillyWilly Says:

    oh yeah, beep!

i realized that after i posted it. i just really like the first 3.

  21. beepaphone Says:

    thanks butter

quadruple nipple doesn’t have the same ring to it…might have to start from scratch

  22. SillyWilly Says:

what could the quadruple nipple be called?

    the three way? 4 nipples = 2 pairs of….

  23. SillyWilly Says:

    sorry if i offended anyone.
