Miner’s Picks – Fall ’09

Madison Square Garden (Brian Ferguson)

As we turn the page from Fall Tour and begin to look towards Miami, I have compiled the latest installment in the Miner’s Picks series – “Fall ’09.” This time around, you’ll find some repeats throughout the eight-hour highlight reel due to Phish’s proclivity for using similar vehicles throughout the run. The band chose their weapons forย  this tour and slayed them each time out, playing some of the most engaging jams from similar launchpads. Providing a legitimate summary of the past tour, “Miner’s Picks: Fall ’09” arrives just in time for the holidays to spice up any dinner or cocktail party. Enjoy the psychedelia with your holiday cheer, and get ready for a Miami New Year!

  6. gus Says:

it’s come up multiple times on the green boards but i’ve learned not to always believe what i see over there.

  7. flarrdogg Says:

I love 4-3-98. It has (rightfully) been discussed here lately and I hadn’t spun it in a while. Ah yes- it does indeed live up to the hype.

  8. beepaphone Says:

Hell yeah that Roses is for real

  9. whole tour! Says:

    it’s legit.

  10. beepaphone Says:

Have they played roses since red rocks?

  11. flarrdogg Says:

Assuming 4-3 is the best show of the island tour, what is #2? 4-2?

  12. beepaphone Says:

4/4 was always my favorite, but they are all so great…it’s hard to chose.

  13. chefbradford Says:

I love 2nd set night 1 Island Tour, “Twist” is other-worldly. All 4 shows are fantastic, though, agreed. Funky segue-fest in the very last set. The soundcheck jams on the LP SBDs are pretty tasty, as well

  14. Uncle Ebeneezer Says:

Can’t wait to listen to all these picks…I’ve been spinning Albany Set 2 in the car the last few days.

And for the record, the headies are nice in Seattle ๐Ÿ™‚

    re: grinders

like Miner i take one on all trips. we buy the plastic ones for travel. they don’t set off metal detectors and they are inexpensive which is nice because we either throw them away or give them away if possible at the end of the trip.

for a while we were just pre-grinding all the herb for a trip. this method had 2 major benefits. you don’t need to bring a grinder with. your weed is much smaller and compact for “stashing”. the downsides to the pre-grind are you can’t show anyone your “headies” cuz its just a bunch of powder. but like AW says “all go, no show” is great and “looking” at the beautiful nug doesn’t get you irie, puffing it does. The other downside to the pregrind is it will get stale after 4 or 5 days. Now that we can fly with it at SFO and Oakland, I’m back to bringing fresh unground nugs and a grinder.

so far everything i’ve talked about is for travel puffing. which for me is 90% joints, where the grinder is a premium. especially for the power preshow rolling session of 4-7 healthy spliffs.

at home i don’t use a grinder for bong hits, bubblers or bowls. but for joints and the volcano its irreplaceable. i have a “mendo mulcher” (standard size) and a great big one that collects kief in a screw off bottom compartment.

  24. Mr. Completely Says:

Now that we can fly with it at SFO and Oakland

    with a scrip right?

  25. BrandonKayda Says:

You guys and your pot ๐Ÿ™‚

So, now I guess I don’t have school until next year. They closed this whole week for “snow” (that stopped Saturday night)

    Awesome.

Anyhow, I want to move back into the 2003 Phish discussion for a second:

This is only my opinion of course, but I really can’t enjoy those shows as much as I should because of all of the negative things that was going on/was going to happen later. I’ve always seen post-hiatus as the sad, drug-addiction part of Phish’s history. No matter how good the jamming was (which it did have stellar moments), I have always felt that era to have dark overtones to it. That is why in 2009, even though they are still building their way back to the stellar Phish we all know and love, they are clean and happy now; when post-hiatus they were having issues off stage, Trey’s opiate problems, etc. It just wasn’t a happy time for the band. Phish 3.0, as it goes on, may be some of the best Phish we have seen yet. Phish is in a great place right now, and it is only getting better.
