Miner’s Picks – Fall ’09

Madison Square Garden (Brian Ferguson)

As we turn the page from Fall Tour and begin to look towards Miami, I have compiled the latest installment in the Miner’s Picks series – “Fall ’09.” This time around, you’ll find some repeats throughout the eight-hour highlight reel due to Phish’s proclivity for using similar vehicles throughout the run. The band chose their weapons for  this tour and slayed them each time out, playing some of the most engaging jams from similar launchpads. Providing a legitimate summary of the past tour, “Miner’s Picks: Fall ’09” arrives just in time for the holidays to spice up any dinner or cocktail party. Enjoy the psychedelia with your holiday cheer, and get ready for a Miami New Year!

  1. Mr. Palmer Says:

Tix are a little easier to come by for the Gorge as well

  2. Leo Weaver Says:

@aw…congrats!!! Best of luck to you guys, nice touch on the grinder…

“one place I know she always looks within 10 minutes of getting home
no chance of not finding it”

…our ladies have a lot in common 🙂

“when you’re rocking 3-4 strains in the jar it makes for some brutal joints…love the combo high”

amen, like a box of chocolates….

Great discussion on grinders…I recently discovered them. I use C’s pluck ‘n fluff method for bowls and bats, and the grinder for bongs and j’s…makes the job SOO much easier on the j’s and as Miner notes, the tokes are MUCH more productive

Watched youtubes from 4.4.98 II today at the office…some FINE music from that run…

  3. Mr. Palmer Says:

Neemor, never really looked into the “no spoilers” action. its worth checking out? i usually can’t wait till next day to see setlists..etc. i’m too curious.

  4. Leo Weaver Says:

And the MSG Light is absofuckinglutely incredible…14 minute mark and again at 16 min mark…wow…wish I were gonna be in Miami. A Sirius stream would be a nice alternative

  5. BrandonKayda Says:

Shoreline Disease was the best all year as of now.

We’ll see if Miami brings the extra-special New Years heat (it will).

  6. Leo Weaver Says:

and Mr. P…never been to RR so can’t do an apples – apples comparison, but you can’t go wrong with the gorge. if you camp there, it’s like a small festival. It was all us, all phish, all open sky…a PERFECT weekend combo my friend. Book it…

  7. Mr. Completely Says:

Palmer, that’s a hell of a hard choice if it’s 1 to 1 in terms of # of shows. But overall I think RR is a tougher ticket which means if you have the opportunity to go you should jump on it IMO.

No one is a bigger fan of the Gorge than me, and you can’t go wrong really…

  8. neemor Says:

4.3.98, Fish starts the ‘Mound’ beat,
Trey says, “NO”, decides he’d rather play ‘Dogs Stole Things’.
    Interesting.

  9. butter Says:

I’m with Leo, the Gorge is all inclusive, hassle free Phish

  10. Mr. Completely Says:

also keep in mind this past year was not representative of the Gorge in August

people right now have a glowing image of the venue

reviews were a lot more mixed after the ’97 shows

what if they book the 3 night run everyone is salivating for and then it’s 103 degrees the whole time?

just saying, love the place, but when it gets hot there, it’s a real different experience

  11. neemor Says:

    Leo, about Sirius comment:

What the ABB is doing seems like the perfect (or at least a really good) solution to our stream issue.

My boss used it for the Allman’s and was very happy.
You can apparently run the stream through your computer and TV…works nice for those of us with a sound system hooked up.

It would be livePhish with video…mouthwatering idea.

  12. neemor Says:

    That’s true about RR/Gorge.
If the harder ticket is RR, shoot for that one and once you’ve made the trek to Rocks, you might as well extent the trip West….
Although I suppose that works the other way if ticket difficulty isn’t in play (judging by Indio sales)…you’d be on your way home from Cali>Colorado.

However, which show is first would come into play also….
Lot’s of parameters come into play with that decision…

  13. butter Says:

i was going to bring the heat up, but then you have to talk about the rain at RR. it’s rained and stormed the last 3 times of been their in summer.

that being said an RV with air conditioning/ or a hotel with the same could save your ass at the Gorge during the typical August drought.

  14. neemor Says:

moogis is what ABB used, check out the site with that name .com if you’d like a closer look at the technology.

  15. Mr. Palmer Says:

I’m not a camper, can’t do that anymore. Hotels for me. thanks for the insight.

  16. neemor Says:

Wow, the 4.3.98 Reba, Trey practically played another song!

  17. butter Says:

@Palmer – then if you are hoteling it, i might steer ya back to RR.

just cuz once you have a commute from hotel to venue you’ve taken

    away one of Gorge’s allures

  18. butter Says:

but….Gorge being true GA, its still more hassle free than RR

  19. Leo Weaver Says:

Good points about gorge heat…being a southeastner, I normally take my heat with a lot of available shade and lots of humidity…the no humidity thing was nice out there, but damn it was tough (and essential) to stay out of the sun. thank god for my little sunshade that aintnotele and I were able to *creatively* postition and secure…and the temps were *perfect*. Can’t imagine if it’d been 103.

@neemor…something like that would be GREAT. I thoroughly enjoyed the F8 stream…in no small part due to enjoying/sharing with you guys…but would cherish the option to listen to a show live via stream. Probably couldn’t do ’em all, but could certainly do a select dozen or so a tour 🙂 I’d subscribe to some service for this, whether XM or others.

BTW, while on Sirius/streaming…I’ve wondered if their broadcast of F8 was some kind of recruitment tool. I mean, their music right now is “more accessible” for all intents and purposes and what better way to capitalize than on XM/Sirius which I THINK is pretty common among the younger generation (maybe?). Great marketing (attempt anyway)

@BK, gus and other younger phans…did you or any of your friends “sit around and listend to this band phish at their halloween festival”? It sounds like something “cool” to do…or maybe I’m just a 33 y/o phish dork with nothing better to think about on a Monday night. And what is “cool” nowadays anyway?

    OK…I’ll be quiet

    *reaches for another puff*

  20. BrandonKayda Says:

Leo – I was here for Festival 8. My friends have lives and are listening to much better music than Phish (Drowning Pool and all of that stellar stuff) to care and listen with me. Besides, Phish is lame hippy crap anyways, I’m gonna go follow Lady Gaga on tour.

Popular music today is ass anyways. Look at the top 20 iTunes downloads to prove my point. Nickleback, Disturbed, etc. all of these bull-shit, pre-packaged angry bands that fit with angst-filled teenagers such as myself 🙂

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qv9VKKXwVxU

^^This is what passes for music at my school. I want to lobotomize myself.

Miami will be the heat, I’ll be here geeking it out with you guys, enjoying every minute.

  21. ohhphee Says:

    @ Leo Weaver

    :: exhales smoke ::
At 39, I’m right there with you. Longtime Phish dork myself. I don’t know about the younger phans, but I would totally listen to live streams of the shows(the ones I couldn’t make, which would be most).

  22. butter Says:

i think BK is really Trey

  23. Leo Weaver Says:

you’re a smart kid @bk…keep on listenin’…and geeking it out with us old dorks

  24. neemor Says:

    “20 iTunes downloads”

What? You can download other music besides Phish?
    Wait….there’s other bands besides Phish?

  25. ohhphee Says:

    “and their goddamned cell phones!”
