Miner’s Picks – Fall ’09

Madison Square Garden (Brian Ferguson)

As we turn the page from Fall Tour and begin to look towards Miami, I have compiled the latest installment in the Miner’s Picks series – “Fall ’09.” This time around, you’ll find some repeats throughout the eight-hour highlight reel due to Phish’s proclivity for using similar vehicles throughout the run. The band chose their weapons forĀ  this tour and slayed them each time out, playing some of the most engaging jams from similar launchpads. Providing a legitimate summary of the past tour, “Miner’s Picks: Fall ’09” arrives just in time for the holidays to spice up any dinner or cocktail party. Enjoy the psychedelia with your holiday cheer, and get ready for a Miami New Year!

it’s all fun and games until the cuban necktie

tour advice from an old pro

  2. halcyon Says:

FYI….there are pages and pages of threads on gigposters regarding how the poster artist for Philly plagiarizes, and loots others artwork. There are pages of it on Phishposters as well. It is amazing to see how that artist has ripped off other artists.

    12/28/03:

Thing about that show was song placement. I know that I will never say this again but, the Sample out of Bowie is perfectly placed and it sounds great

Don’t think I’ve ever actively looked for a Sample but I’m not sure that any other song would’ve fit there as well after the ambient-infused Bowie jam

And then Tweezer, LLama, “Best” Frankie Says ever, (I know, I know) Fish segment and Tweeprise all in the first set??

    C’mon Man!

  4. shpongleyez Says:

cuban necktie! had blocked this out. what a way to bring in the dawn on the beach.

  5. Corey Says:

    @Leo

Thanks. Still have a week to go though.
As my dad would proudly say, “Now, you’re less than half way to seventy.” Aww, thanks dad.

  6. Mr.Miner Says:

^ itsa great song to live by….

  7. Mr. Palmer Says:

Ironically in the midst of the of the 12.28.03 Suzy as i read your posts. Not sure if there has ever been a Suzy quite like this one, or will ever be one again. Bring back the 20min Suzy!

    @AW

Thing about most of the songs that we love from them is that it’s about the music first, lyrics later

Obviously, those lyrics hold special meaning to Trey and the journey he’s gone through

Couldn’t keep myself from laughing at MPP when I saw it mid-second set, now it’s not so bad

I’m sure it will get even better with time, just keep “riding that bike”

  9. Neemor Says:

^ computes perfectly. Secret Smile is gorgeous. embrace the totality people.

I will still hold onto my ideals that Secret Smile ENCORE is perhaps the worst choice that could be made. As a jam landing pad, maybe….a breather song, occasionally.
In fact, this encore choice led to them being booed off stage the next night, without a doubt.

  10. jay Says:

listening to Miner’s ‘Miami 03 picks. Thank you. Like many ’03 shows, I have never listened to any of the Miami ’03 shows. Thanks for the chase cutting.

  11. Mr.Miner Says:

Secret Smile is a classy encore for that ridiculously dark show…like when they drop a Velvet Sea encore…it just works perfectly for some sets, IMO

  12. Corey Says:

    Phish was booed off stage?
    When did that happen?

  13. sumodie Says:

both miner & aw’s 2003 perspectives feel right to me. they’re just using different lens.

  14. jay Says:

this encore choice led to them being booed off stage the next night

For real? If so pretty uncool IMO.

  15. Mr. Palmer Says:

FWIW Neemor- i remember having similar setiments re:Secret Smile at the show. In retrospect, maybe it works it totality, but at the time i found myself more than a bit puzzled (wouldn’t be the first time though)

  16. Mr.Miner Says:

“In fact, this encore choice led to them being booed off stage the next night, without a doubt.”

^ Neemor, were you living your own existence? What are you talking about? Noone was booed off of any stage.

  17. Neemor Says:

“Secret Smile is a classy encore for that ridiculously dark show”

Or, you could just call me classless.

  18. Mr. Palmer Says:

Some over-served and obnoxious fans did boo, but Miner is correct. No one was booed of any stage.

  19. albert walker Says:

Phish would never be booed off stage

I think it would actually encourage them
    they’d think it was funny

  20. VoidBoy Says:

Does anyone know a site or link where past (or current) Phish posters can be found… Hi res preferred, but a collection of lo-res would be fine as well.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  21. Neemor Says:

Clearly, I was in my own existence…
And I’m sure there’s a different perspective between floor seats and the lawn.
That weekend was the first time I ever heard so many boo’s coming from around me on the lawn.
In fact, I packed my shit and left before Hood on the 31st because I felt the lack of respect was appalling.

On some recordings, as a matter of fact, you can here some jackass scream, “This song sucks” during Friday.

Maybe choice of words was incorrect, they weren’t booed off stage as some of us think of it, but as they left the stage on the 31st, the usual cheering was accompanied with a lot of boos.

Please, guys…I was there as much as you all were.

  22. albert walker Says:

the one thing I did notice vs 2003

Page’s Clav playing has grown immensely
seems like he was just figuring it out back then

now he is full on Stevie Superstitious Style
really adds a new dimension to funk tunes like Ghost and Wolfman’s

  23. HarryHood Says:

Started the Cincy YEM and had to abort due to having to run to a meeting that I forgot about. Re-started and re-listened. I’m gonna say that I still liked the MSG version better. I’m not saying that it WAS better, just saying that I personally liked it better. Cincy was more of a whole band deal whereas MSG was Trey just getting dirty.

  24. sumodie Says:

shpongle’s reaction to the cuban necktie comment makes it sound like a phan got one in 03. did i (gladly) miss hearing the news back then?

  25. flarrdogg Says:

12/28/03- a great show. 12/29/03- my favorite show that I attended in 2.0. I love this show tremendously. HUGE piper opener (one of the best ever?), but the rest of the first set was pretty average. But that second set…great, great Phish. RnR>Free is all epic. Miner’s take that the jams were not all fully realized may be on point, but to my ears the sum of the parts equals ONE HOT SET. The Free jam still makes me smile to this day and I was quite sure that the noise level reached in AAA arena during the breakdown in that song would (cliche) blow the f-ing roof off that place. Very sour about not having the ends to attend this year. Other corner of the country for me. Have fun people!
