Summer Tour?

Red Rocks (W.Rogell)

While we are still braving the cold of January, rumors of summer Phish have begun to fall from the winter air. After Trey announced a half-year break on New Year’s Eve, nobody thought we’d be hearing any rumblings of rumors and announcements in the first half of January. Without any shows scheduled for the first part of the year, one would expect a full-slate come summertime. While we still have almost five months ahead of us before amphitheatre season officially opens, there is no time like the present to speculate.

Thus far, these are the dates being reported:

  • 6/3-4 Deer Creek
  • 6/5-6 Alpine
  • 6/11-12 SPAC

6.18.09 (M.Stein)

If these dates prove true, we are looking at a cornfield kickoff to summer tour at Deer Creek, a place that has traditionally hosted tour-ending parties. Such an early-season start might suggest another two-leg affair as in 2009, as one would expect Phish to hit most major markets during the summer concert season. With the initial eastward path plotted by these few unconfirmed dates, Phish will likely hit up the Northeastern venues before taking a dip south through the mid-Atlantic. West coast shows might comprise leg two once again, as it seems unlikely the band will criss-cross the country like back in the day. Sure, this is a lot of guess-work based on a couple of rumors, but, hey, it’s January, and things are pretty quiet in the Phish world.

With 2009 behind them, 2010 could represent a musical rebirth of Phish. After logging a solid comeback year, one would imagine that the band will begin to push their music in a new direction. Throughout last year, Phish moved from tighter, rock and roll jams in June to wide-open improv in Miami, reacquainting themselves with their skills along the way. Now it’s time to really open things up, and we’ve only got four and a half months to go…hopefully.

Hey guys, I have a few minutes to try to catch up on todays conversations. Only on page 2.

Neemor, did you know that Benicio del toro was on Big Top PeeWee as dog face boy? dog faced boy > wolfman’s brother

    Congratulations Gratefulcub!

Benico Del Toro is the eff-ing man!
He should have gotten an oscar for Fear and Loathing IMHO.

BK–I’d highly recommend the Warfield (5.31, with Santana) and the two Chicago shows from ’03 (6.4 & 6.5). I think that was TAB’s peak, personally. I think there’s a soundboard out there from Red Rocks ’01, isn’t there? I love Alpine ’01 (7.21); Medeski for the whole show and an outstanding duel between him and Trey in the second set. And I am still a sucker for the first Bonnaroo, but I can’t honestly say whether it’s as awesome listening to it if you don’t have the memories of being there.

    goooood catch @stitch!

    @ cal

That original bonnaroo TAB set was epic. One of my all time favs.

  8. Lycanthropist Says:

yeah BK bonnaroo TAB is whats up

  9. Leo Weaver Says:

agreed @WT…I’m looking forward to the new Wolfman movie.

  10. BrandonKayda Says:

Well, TAB is coming DC in Febuary, so I may try and make it to that.

But I think I’d rather save my “concert points” for Phish in the summer

  11. BrandonKayda Says:

I’ll check out those shows, thanks guys

Just reading back on the bad news, HH. Sorry to hear that, for real, especially with the likkle one. Time tough, as they say. On the bright side, unemployment checks can be pretty sweet for a little while.

@Leo it’s all good, buddy. It’s not your fault I’m 1300 miles away from my favorite food on the planet.

    re: reggae
Going back to my usual 1 hour of reggae on the radio ( tonight from 10-11pm CST. Not nearly enough time for all of the themes converging (MLK, Haiti, Yabby U’s passing) but to paraphrase Flight Of The Concords: 2 half hours of reggae is better than no half hours of reggae.

  13. Lycanthropist Says:

let there be no doubt that you should save your points for Phish

  14. Leo Weaver Says:

I’ll gladly take my two half hours over the alternative 🙂

Holy shit I didn’t see about the little peppadew! Congrats, cub!

And a smaller congrats for Mr. C, being a Carolina transplant and finding legit BBQ in a place like PDX…the little things in life, people. Here’s to hoping the sauce was vinegar, and not ketchup-based.

P.S. my Carolina Butt Sauce pwns faces.

At ‘roo, when Trey started conducting the audience…I still get chills thinking about it. I was absolutely freaking out. For long jams where you seriously have NO idea what song you started out in, that show is still hard to top.

  17. Leo Weaver Says:

so you hosting a ‘cue for us this summer @beep?

  18. halcyon Says:

@HH…..may your new job search lead you to new and more exciting opportunities. Sorry to hear about the job loss.

Here is a Chance Fisher – “Plight of My Heart” – 12/11 (FYE Plight) review I have decided to write: —————–>Fairly long

0:00 – It starts out with a funky bass-led intro by Sam. Around 1:10 they drop into the Plight rhythm. Jud drops the lead riff and we’re off. 1:45 the first verse begins. Funky up until the end of the first chorus, then the jam begins at around the 3:00 mark.

It starts out with a little AKelly solo as the drums drop out for a few measures and things begin to get more interesting. They drop back into the Plight theme as Jud begins to add some more sinister lines to the jam – Around 4:00 they are still chugging along as Jud latches onto a theme. Nice backing by Adam around 5:05 as the darkness arises. Dark leads by Jud around the 5:40 mark. Drums and bass remain firmly in the pocket as Jud and Adam begin to bring the jam into denser and more dissonant territory.

Around 7:00 both Jud and AKelly are trading dissonant lines and it is clear that this is no normal “Plight” jam. Release from the dissonance at 7:50 as it appears we are ending the jam. Instead, we are led into a short “Drums” segment as Jud continues to add sludge onto the jam. AKelly stays in the higher register, adding in chaos to this twisted “Plight”.

At 9:40 Jud continues to add abstract phrases to this “Plight”, as it twists and turns through narrow corridors like a venomous snake. 10:20 there is finally a release from the darkness, but soon after Jud once again dips into off-key dissonance at 10:50. Drum/bass pick up on this beat, as they descend into a dark loop-jam for nearly a minute. Around the 11:50 mark, the jam disenegrates into spacey feedback wails, as there seems to be no way out of the mud pit this jam has become.

Finally, at the 13:00 mark, we find our way out of the pit and return to the “Plight” theme, and the nightmare is over. The song melts into the final verse and ends at the 16:07 mark.

This “Plight” definitely goes into the deep end more than a few times, an atypical “Plight” for sure. 5/5

@leo good idea….I’ll bring my smoker to DC no doubt…I’ll try to work in conjunction with GP and msb to get a big PT camping spot and we’ll make it happen.

  21. Leo Weaver Says:

^this sounds good…I’ll do what I can to make it to DC, with proper box of tricks and tools in tow…and good beer…and… 🙂

  22. gus Says:

i may have asked this before, but who’s going to TAB at the house of blues boston? let’s have a PT meetup.

  23. beepaphone Says:

Thanks, WT!, but in all seriousness, “The Situation” is the best character in reality TV history.
