Ten Tunes For Friday

11.21.09 (W.Rogell)

Here’s another ten-pack to get you through the last day of the week. Click on any orange song title to download. Enjoy!

Down With Disease” 5.21.00 II, Radio City, NYC

The unquestionable highlight of the first Radio City show, this version provides a smoking example of early-2000 Phish. These were the first shows following Big Cypress, and were some of the most highly anticipated in the band’s history.

Piper” 12.8.99 II CCCC, Portland, ME

Throughout ’99, “Piper” transformed into a more earnest jam vehicle than its earlier incarnations. While the band took the song on many thrilling rides, this piece, from Portland, ME, provides a example of Phish swimming up a vastly different channel.

Walls > Carini” 2.14.03 II, The Forum, LA, CA

8.15.09 (K.Pusey)

After a lackluster comeback run at MSG and Hampton, this show brought Phish back into focus. This second set sequence represents the first stellar jam of the post-hiatus era, and there would be many more. Coming out like a different band than the tentative quartet who played through their much-hyped return, Phish seemed to latch onto an improvisational ethos early in this winter tour that would set their musical path of ’03. Featuring an outlandishly exploratory “Walls,” these 45 minutes are for keeps.

Tweezer” 8.6.96 II Red Rocks, CO

Taking it back Phish’s original four-night stand at Red Rocks, this monster version came as part of the classic “Curtain > Tweezer” combination. One of the unmistakable jams of the weekend, these smooth grooves build into a sublime quote of The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood.”

Mango (jam)> Free” 9.17.00 II Merriweather, Columbia, MD

6.7.09 (D.Vann)

Drifting from “Mango’s” upbeat territory into a dark, millennial ambiance, Phish used this unlikely jam vehicle to ignite a phenomenal set-ending sequence. Gradually layering a dissonant soundscape far from reality, the band created the most menacing textures of the show. Bleeding into a hugely energetic “Free,” Phish capped this top-shelf Fall ’00 offering with gusto.

Yamar” 7.25.98 I  South Park Meadows, Austin, TX

Often overlooked in the first set, this “Yamar” transforms from an island paradise into a dark guitar narrative of lessons learned on a mythical battlefield.

Reba” 10.18.94 II Memorial Gym, Nashville, TN

1994 and “Reba” go together like peanut butter and jelly; two peas in a pod. And here’s another reason why – a vintage rendition.

Round Room” 2.15.03 I Thomas and Mack, Las Vegas, NV

12.31.09 (W.Rogell)

Experimenting with the debut of their album’s title track, Phish gave us an early taste of ’03 psychedelia. This piece provides a glimpse into the ultra-textured, ambient improv that the band embraced throughout their comeback year. If one thing was true about ’03, the band never hesitated to jump into the void on a whim, and this was one of those excursions.

This dark-horse, jam-filled reader request from goes out to Bob the Brewer in Freeport, Maine, who used to blast this XLII while delivering pizzas back in the day. If you find yourself in Freeport, stop by Gritty McDuff’s Brewpub, “Where Phish on full volume makes the beer taste that much better!”

I: Dogs Stole Things, Limb By Limb, Ginseng Sullivan, Bathtub Gin, Llama* > Wading in the Velvet Sea > Jam, Olivia’s Pool

II: 2001 > Julius > Magilla, Ya Mar > Ghost > Take Me to the River* > Jam

Yeah, I’ve already put on a few pounds, actually. I can’t complain, I’ve been off for like three weeks. I can go back to listening to music all day

  2. joe Says:

    from phish dot net:

    Stash[1] -> Manteca -> Stash[2] -> Dog Faced Boy[3] -> Stash

Notes: Dog Faced Boy was performed over a different arrangement than usual. This fantastic Stash included Esther, Ya Mar and 25 or 6 to 4 teases and quotes

Mr. Miner. Can we get this one in the archives?

  3. Foul_Domain Says:

Hey people. Just checked into hotel after a long day of driving….and seeing all this ganja talk is killing me. Still 12 hours away from my little green friends. At least I can get high on Miner’s Friday jams…its a start

I looks like the term Neembane is taking hold. lmao!

  4. ChefBradford Says:

This does mean I should get a shave and a haircut by next Friday though

  5. garretc Says:

Yeah Chef, I love idleness as much as, or more, than the average person, but there comes a point where, towards the end of my vacations, I just need to do something productive. At that point I get mildly excited to go back to school (within reason of course…). Then I get back to school and realize it’s all a waste of time and I’m not being productive at all still, and I get bummed out…

  6. garretc Says:

Wow foul, that’s impressive, getting back on the road already? I feel like I would flinch every time I SAW a car, let alone drive one… Props! And yeah, neemsbane, the official weed of the blackboard! Hmmmmm, t-shirt?

  7. joe Says:

how have I not heard this stash monster before?

  8. KWL Says:

that is some seriously bright shit. I scoped it at approx. 19:41 o’clock.

@cub, got a pick yet? what say you we both fire up 11-13-94, a recent dotd

  9. garretc Says:

Most likely a conspiracy joe… That’s always the likeliest explanation!

  10. KWL Says:

@foul_domain, new car or old one repaired? I gotta say either way, that was fast. And yeah, what garret said.

  11. joe Says:

I’d recommend this one to you guys for sure. not in the archives though. 11/14/95.

  12. Foul_Domain Says:

yeah, no choice but to get back on the road. 1.5-2 weeks before car gets fixed….and heres the killer – its at a GM dealership 22 hours away from my home. Insurance company is paying for my rental, but I have to drive it back when my car is ready. AAARRRGGHH!

But this time you can bet Ill be packing a serious bag

  13. ChefBradford Says:

Good on ya, foul domain. Have, above all, a SAFE return

  14. joe Says:

that’s crazy foul. have any good companions for the trip?

  15. Foul_Domain Says:

@KWL – Ford Focus rental. I would have flown or took a train, but I had to get my tools back.

Plus….You wont see a moose when youre sittin on a plane

  16. ChefBradford Says:

I haven’t listened to that Stash in awhile. Need to check it out again, obviously

  17. Foul_Domain Says:

Thanks! No companions – just the boys playing a few fall tour shows

  18. bhizzle Says:

heard on the radio that California has enough signatures to place legalization of recreational marijuana on the ballot for the next round of voting…..

ooooohhhh so close. I can almost smell it

  19. Gratefulcub Says:

I hate it when I go back a page and don’t get the full page. now I will NEVER know what happened at the end of page 23.

I don’t have that one downloaded at this time KWL.

  20. garretc Says:

Yeah bhizzle, but then I’ll need to be 21 to buy weed, and who knows if the illicit market will still exist if/when legalization hits? I’m guessing yes, but on a verrrrry small scale, and that’s inconvenient…

  21. ChefBradford Says:

Call me a nerd, but Raiders of the Lost Ark holds up pretty damn well after 30 or so years. Childhood favorite, and I still love it

  22. joe Says:

ok, I’m not really a consumer of livephish releases or a phishtorian or I would have had this one before today. this is why I need mr. miner to take care of those things for me.

  23. Foul_Domain Says:

lol. Mikes hotline message is funny right now

  24. Foul_Domain Says:

Ive probably watched Raiders 20 times in my life….and if it was on TV right now, Id watch it again. Classic.

  25. ChefBradford Says:

Yeah but garret, have you ever convinced somebody of age to get you some alcohol?
