FWIW those manichean/gnostic ideas are at the root of all the masterworks by the great SF writer Philip K. Dick, that is basically his philosophy, he called it the “Black Iron Prison”; and of course PKD is the root source of the Matrix idea, another SF restatement of the same concept.

If you like this kind of Lost episode, and you like psychedelics, you really should try some PKD.

  2. Mr. Completely Says:

yes, good vs evil is the ultimate played out idea, and free will vs fate is a million times more interesting

  3. Lycanthropist Says:

    @Marshall

no, because Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Miles, etc have never been in 2007. Which is where the current present is for our original timeline.

  4. Mr. Completely Says:

    @lycan –

you’re really good at keeping the details straight.

very helpful to have a guy like you in this convo.

I tend to get caught up in the themes and forget a lot of relevant detail.

I wonder if the massive amounts of weed might have anything to do with that?

  5. Lycanthropist Says:

its easiest to chart out the courses of everyone on paper to wrap your head around it..

    but its like this.

Seasons 1-4 = the main timeline story. all the characters experience everything together.

Season 5: Still one reality, but here the time line splits b/t 1977 and 2007. Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid get blasted back to 1977 and therefore never land back on the island in 2007.

Season 6: Now there are two realities. One where they crash one where they dont. All the time travellers are now back where they should be in 2007 in reality A

  6. Lycanthropist Says:

    @Mr. C

i have a more than unhealthy obsession with this show. Have seen Seasons 1-3 at least 7 times.

    Season 4-5 not as much.

but i smoke a lot of weed too so i dunno

  7. Lycanthropist Says:

did anybody think it was weird that the translator (who’s character name is Lennon) looks so much like John Lennon?

And right after they introduced him, the first commercial that came on had a beatles tune as the music?

    just a funny coincidence

  8. jay Says:

I dont think so marshall. They were blown forward to present time (2007) and still on the island. The ones in 2004 are on a different timeline due to the explosion (though they are intertwined) and safely land at LAX.

  9. Mr. Completely Says:

yeah I have yet to re-watch any of the early seasons, just individual eps here and there

saving it for a big run all the way through from start to end after the whole thing is complete, will be fun

  10. Lycanthropist Says:

    its like this now

    ___________________2007
    ——— < _____________
    ^ 2004
    1977

  11. Lycanthropist Says:

well that was an epic fail of a diagram

    sorry guys

  12. Lycanthropist Says:

    disregard that completely haahaha

  13. jay Says:

lennon character has the round “lennon” eye glasses. And his master is japanese 🙂

  14. Lycanthropist Says:

    @jay

    i know right!

i thought that was pretty funny…

  15. Mr. Completely Says:

yeah classic Lost character naming joke

they’ll never top “Richard Alpert” though…

  16. jay Says:

also Richard Alpert is a nod to Baba Ram Dass, associated with Timothy Leary.

  17. Mr. Completely Says:

there are a bunch more, a lot of scientist names have popped up, Faraday for example, and Minkowski from the freighter is named after a mathematician who was important in the development of general relativity

  18. Mr. Completely Says:

Faraday of course was central to the development of electromagnetic theory…e.g. the energy pocket

  19. cwc Says:

FYI, there is a pretty good lost blog on USAtoday in the life section. I sort it by most recommended and pick up some good tidbits.

Someone on there claimed there was a dharma shark in the scene of the underwater island. Bunch of things to look for on the rewatch.

  20. Mr.Miner Says:

i have a more than unhealthy obsession with this show. Have seen Seasons 1-3 at least 7 times.

    ^ wow. that’s impressive. AND you play in 2 bands….well played…

I think this first episode is so we are sitting here trying to figure out what the hell is going on….do you think they will just tell these two separate realities for the entire season without explaining the connection?

LOST is getting to be like a math problem from a course I never took 🙂

  21. Mr. Palmer Says:

Lostpedia confirms the Dharma Shark as well FWIW. Must re-watch!

  22. Mr. Palmer Says:

I guess its possible that Rose doesn’t have cancer in the new timeline? Just throwing shit out there.

  23. Mr. Palmer Says:

Oh yeah, one more thing. Anyone have any speculation to Jin and the undeclared cash at the airport?

  24. Lycanthropist Says:

I think the cash was Jin’s money he was going to use to start a new life with Sun.

I am pretty sure that Darlton said that the two timelines thing only last through the 1/3 of the season..

  25. Lycanthropist Says:

Yeh names have always been big on the show

Charolette Staples Lewis = C.S. Lewis
Frank Lapidus = Lapidus means “the light”
Matthew Abbadon = Abbadon is the guardian of the abyss in biblical lore
Hume and Locke both were real life philosophers
Christian Shepard = I mean come on that one is pretty blatent
