SIDE PROJECT READER REVIEWS:

2.12.10 - Boston (Balaji Mani)

In order to enhance coverage of side project shows I am unable to attend, I have decided to try out a new section of Phish Thoughts centered around side projects performances – Side Project Reader Reviews. For the rest of this Trey tour, and Mike’s upcoming tour, I invite you, the readers of Phish Thoughts, to craft your own reviews of shows you attend. These reviews will be posted on a separate page of the site, exclusively reserved for your reviews. However, I am not interested in posting silly narratives about one person’s evening or experiences, rather, I’m looking for astute musical observations and analysis. Try to make these reviews between 500-1000 words, though I reserve the rights to edit down your pieces if necessary. (I will always edit for grammar and flow.) Also, please don’t be offended if your review is not posted. I do not necessarily intend to post every single submission. I will only post well-written reviews that focus primarily on the music. (Try to keep the first person out of things as much as possible, as that will help you stay on topic.) Anyhow, have at it! The only show I’ll be at is Kansas City, so I’ll be welcoming contributions for all other shows, including Mike’s tour. For now, I present to you the inaugural reader review by BogHog2001 about Trey’s show in Boston last night.

Sultans of Swing? Either someone reads our comments or we are seriously dialed in. PT represent.

This 2/13/10 Oakdale Theater – Wallingford, CT. pull looks very interesting!

A little clarification on that lineage.
    CMXY4V=CMC6 > MK4V’s in xy position.

we’ll see if it came out as nice as the Charlottesville pull…

I want TAB to do “In The Wee Wee Hours”

    Love that swing tune!

  7. voopa Says:

Sultan’s has been in Trey’s repertoire since ’02…played 18 times.

    Morning all

How do you know when your old? I just took a 4 hour nap because this old body can’t handle these shows like they used to.
I remember the days of doing long runs of shows. Sleeping like 2 hours a night and feeling perfectly fine.
Last night went to bed at 3:00 a.m. after the Trey show (that’s reasonable) and I feel like I have been run over by a train!
Wouldn’t trade this feeling for anything, what a time last night!

  10. Foul_Domain Says:

After hearing a bunch of tunes from the TAB tour, I think we are in for a real treat in the summer. Trey sounds good as ever. He spent much of early summer ’09 sharpening his playing. I think now there is no question that Treys got his groove back.

And with Mike’s mini tour, Im sure he will come out strong too. Should make for an amazing summer.

Dammit, I cant wait!!!!! I just wish I could swing a TAB show….arg!

  11. EL Duderino Says:

Scratch that last post about the xy position. Yes, there is an XY positioning for mic set up, but these are a specific Stereo mic made by Schoeps.

    here’s a link to CMXY-4V’s:

Nice to get some inside feedback from the TAB shows! jDub had me feeling like I was there for a second, way to go!

My kids still sleeping. Very rare. Not sure what to do with myself.

GF on the coast. Should be a jolly, rainy, ‘Lost’ watching V-day.

AW, I went and got all three of those albums from a good friend. He’s a big dub / reggae collector. You’ll have to meet him on your next trip out. He was surprised when I started asking for all these great albums ‘by name’.

  13. jdub Says:

Foul – I agree, after seeing Trey in total control last night I couldn’t help but feel that this bodes very well for this summer. It struck me during Alaska, a song I’m not a huge fan of for some reason. He was leading a nice swanky jam at the end and I found myself very surprised that Alaska was taken there that quickly. He is back on his game and happy as a clam.

  14. Robear Says:

That girl needs to wake up Neemor, and kick him out of bed!

We need some of his witty reviews!!

Did Trey play ‘Antelope’ last night?

  15. Foul_Domain Says:

jdub – I hear you about Alaska. I heard it first at Star Lake and wasnt a big fan. The solo sounded forced. The TAB versions, though, are much nicer on my ears. To be honest, my favorite version of that song is still the track from Party Time. Go figure! Just not my favorite live tune I guess.

  16. jdub Says:

Neemor didn’t get much sleep Friday night so I think he’s catching up a bit. The jersey made an appearance, there was an antelope spirit in the house for sure.

  17. jdub Says:

Party Time is an under rated album, I am finding that I prefer listening to the album version of songs like Alaska, Ocelot, and kill devil falls, more than listening to live recorded versions. That may change. Seeing those songs live is a different story, as all of those songs have spured me to boogie down.

  18. Foul_Domain Says:

I am a big, BIG fan of Party Time. I much prefer it to Joy

  19. Foul_Domain Says:

I can see why the boys decided to structure the 2 albums the way they did. I dont really think that either of them flow particularly well, but I also think that if you rearranged them in any way, they would still be very ecclectic. There is a lot of diversity among those two discs, especially Party Time. Ive been listening to that one a lot lately.

  20. Willowed Says:

Check out the Alaska from Albany second night. First set if I recal. Best version I’ve ever heard.
I think that jam may change your mind on that song!

  21. voopa Says:

Upsetters – Eastwood Rides Again (VBR MP3)

  22. Foul_Domain Says:

Willowed – I have that one actually. Youre right. Im listening to the jam right now and Trey builds off the same lick as on the album, which I like a lot. Its the lick at the 7:45 mark of the Albany ver. that Im talking about. Cool riff.

  23. jdub Says:

Willowed – how was dragonfly, had to get home by 12 cause of the babysitter. We are getting old my friend, but not too old. Actually, it really is the prime of our lives.

  24. lastwaltzer Says:

I’m not expecting anything from Furthur but was anyone planning on listening to the live stream tonight on sirus?

  25. Willowed Says:

It was nice. Didn’t blow me away. I think the only reason it didn’t hit me was due to the previous two songs for the encore being slower jams.
I am listening to it too Foul. It’s a head bobber!
