The Bearsville Sessions

Bearsville Studios - Bearville, NY

Over the span of two years, Phish spent three different chunks of time at Bearsville Studios, in Bearsville, NY, recording music that would eventually be used for The Story of the Ghost. After The Island Run, Phish’s surprise four-night extravaganza in the spring of ’98, the band returned to Bearsville to record on their forthcoming album with the daunting task of whittling down a list upwards of 40 songs. A particularly creative period in the band’s history, The Bearsville Sessions finally resulted in two albums. Not only did Phish release The Story of the Ghost in the Fall of ’98, but later Page went through the tapes, selecting his favorite instrumental outtakes for what would become the ’99 release, The Siket Disc.

Famous for their improvisational nature, the band went into the studio and jammed, later selecting their favorite segments and creating songs out of them. Much like “The Blob” process used to create Billy Breathes, Phish was left with much more music than they could use at the time. Below are the complete studio outtakes from the band’s Story of the Ghost sessions from April – June 1998. Some songs emerged later, some not until 2009, and some haven’t. So enjoy this portrait of an experimental era in Phish history.

I’m reading your post thinking…… How in the hell does he know my girl. She’s a redhead who weighs about 95 lbs when she’s not carrying my child. Guess she has no soul! llfa

    @ Type III

That might be doable. I was hoping a few of you guys would be hitting the March 5th show in Troy as well. That’s only a two hour drive for me as opposed to the 4+ hour trek down to MA. Both are weekend shows though, so I’ll figure something out.

  3. gratefulcub Says:

I hope you have a little red headed girl. I am saying “She’s so cute” just thinking about a little curly red headed girl.

We will have to wait for those in attendence to report in, but those were Jen’s alternate lyrics when I saw Black Dog back in 01ish.

  4. SillyWilly Says:

Mr. Miner, thank you so much for the download today. This is so freakin cool!

Just a quick thought I had the other day sitting in my Property class talking about copyrights, trademarks, and the state of art in general:

Originality in art has been undermined by the culture industry. Record labels, book publishers, and Hollywood have a model that they want to reproduce and they praise and distribute art that generally follows this model.

Phish is a positive statement against this, obviously, but so is Mr. Miner. Miner, you know so much about Phish that you could easily take a year off (please dont!) and write a truly intellectual critique of Phish. You could get it published and charge everyone and make tons of money.

BUT, you don’t. You share freely with us and I can only imagine the hardwork that goes into this on top of your “real job.” Eventhough I have never met you, i just want to express my total gratitude. you are awesome. thanks for giving us all a space to communicate and feed our obsession.

Yeah Black Dog and Root Down were in the rotation back in ’03. I loved hearing Trey and Jen trading verses on Root Down. That was some good stuff.

  6. HarryHood Says:

My critter’s hair color is going to be a total gamble (unless someone here is more versed in dominant/recessive genes than I am). My girl has what I would call red hair, but she claims it’s brown. My hair is brown, and her’s is very red compared to mine but she still won’t admit that she’s a redhead. Her mother’s hair is bright red though, so I have no clue how this kid is gonna turn out…… No curls though, both of us are straight as an arrow.

  7. kayatosh Says:

miner: you’re the man, but that first sentence, “Over the span of two years, Phish spent three different chunks of time over two years at Bearsville Studios, in Bearsville, NY . . .” is unfortunately redundant.

ahh who cares. you’re still the bets thing to happen to the phish community since doniac schive

  8. kayatosh Says:

    or was it doniac schvice

  9. SillyWilly Says:

the few grammar problems in Mr. Miner’s posts always comfort me, because it makes me feel like even when Miner is rushed for time, he makes sure and gets his thought up for the day.

  10. HarryHood Says:

you’re still the bets thing to happen to the phish community since doniac schive

    ^ And midget wookettes

  11. gratefulcub Says:

D’OH!, you can’t critique and then say “the bets thing” 8)

  12. BTB Says:

    Pleasant surprise today. Thanks Miner.

They just put some track from bearsville on the Party Time disk? Hmmm…

  13. HarryHood Says:

Should I have used the word midget? Is that acceptable in this forum? Is vertically challenged nitrous slinging hippie wookette more appropriate?

  14. gratefulcub Says:

    ^^ And PCP

  15. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    @hood
she just needs to become comfortable with her ginger-ness. taking her to trey/phish shows helps since he is one of the top shelf gingers out there.

  16. BTB Says:

    Yeah, dood. You’re the bets!!

  17. HarryHood Says:

Sorry, it wasn’t my fault. I had taken too much PCP.

  18. SillyWilly Says:

im trying to picture this lil’ wookette and im cracking up….yesterdays YMBAWI jokes were killing me.

  19. BTB Says:

Hood, you are such a sucker for midget Wookettes holding 2 small twenty dollar balloons.

  20. marcoesq Says:

Thanks for the hook up, Miner! Love this stash>cities

    Lindsey Jacobellis, oh boy…
She came to the Olympics looking like a transvestite and left looking like a transvestite loser

Not trying to beat up on the girl but c’mon
I’ve snowboarded for 17yrs, used to love running those borderx courses

Have to keep your composure and focus though, she definitely didn’t

  21. HarryHood Says:

    @ Type III

She definitely lives up to the redhead persona in more ways than one. She can deny it all she wants, but it’s a lost cause.

  22. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

it probably already exists, but I’d love to see a book/collection of all of the phish newsletters from back in the day. I remember being so psyched every time one landed in my mailbox.

  23. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    @silly
we really did talk about taking a picture of her on saturday but due to the spotters we couldn’t figure out a way to do it without the risk of causing a ruckus. and nobody wants a ruckus pre-show.

  24. HarryHood Says:

“Hood, you are such a sucker for midget Wookettes holding 2 small twenty dollar balloons”

^ What can I say? I think they are so cute holding those little balloons in their fat little fingers…….. Its like I just hand over the money without realizing it.

  25. gratefulcub Says:

    @Hood,

I just had an image of the balloons getting too big and her floating away.
