The Bearsville Sessions

Bearsville Studios - Bearville, NY

Over the span of two years, Phish spent three different chunks of time at Bearsville Studios, in Bearsville, NY, recording music that would eventually be used for The Story of the Ghost. After The Island Run, Phish’s surprise four-night extravaganza in the spring of ’98, the band returned to Bearsville to record on their forthcoming album with the daunting task of whittling down a list upwards of 40 songs. A particularly creative period in the band’s history, The Bearsville Sessions finally resulted in two albums. Not only did Phish release The Story of the Ghost in the Fall of ’98, but later Page went through the tapes, selecting his favorite instrumental outtakes for what would become the ’99 release, The Siket Disc.

Famous for their improvisational nature, the band went into the studio and jammed, later selecting their favorite segments and creating songs out of them. Much like “The Blob” process used to create Billy Breathes, Phish was left with much more music than they could use at the time. Below are the complete studio outtakes from the band’s Story of the Ghost sessions from April – June 1998. Some songs emerged later, some not until 2009, and some haven’t. So enjoy this portrait of an experimental era in Phish history.

KP, I’m gonna’ give it a listen, because you do good work.

FTR, I did not like that show. Only Phish show I’ve walked out of early.

Someone in the equation looked wasted, and it wasn’t me.

  2. HarryHood Says:

    “We almost lost him”

“make the child sit in a corner and put a pointed cap on his head that simply says , “WILSON.”

^ Neemor, in a matter of seconds, you just made me cry and then laugh hysterically. I feel like I’m at a wedding….

  3. Leo Weaver Says:

@robear…I met up with some friends at the 11.23.97 show who’d been at the mothership the nights before. They were still disoriented…they were literally speechless. Have fun with the Ambient Jam…should be interesting with that age group.

@neemor…nice post re: smiles and happy. I’ve been smiling a lot listening to these shows.

  4. marcoesq Says:

    Thanks bro, downloading it now

You plan on doing the next night by any chance? 🙂 Las Cruces 2001 1st set opener…

  6. Robear Says:

Okay, not totally true. When I’ve been in vendor mode on tour, I’ve skipped many an encore. More by necessity than choice.

KP, if you could find the soundcheck from that Pima, AZ show, that would be something.

  7. HarryHood Says:

Robear, make sure you follow up the Ambient Jam with Contact. What kid wouldn’t love Contact? Or at least laugh at it…

  8. kayatosh Says:

call me cray, but i’m majorly digging 2/9. TAB is hot!

neemor: your appreciation for trey and thoughts expressed above are excellent. i feel the same. glad to have my hero back in fine form.

    yep, gay for trey

  9. HarryHood Says:

And then tell them it’s the same band. Take a vote to see how many kids think you’re full of S%*T

  10. EL Duderino Says:

    @ Robear

The ffp folder, MD5 are to verify and check against the file set to make sure they match up and are the sources they claim to be.

  11. SillyWilly Says:

Robear: Expanding minds through Phish. 1 12 year old at a time.

  12. HarryHood Says:

    El Dude,

Why do I get the feeling that you are the guy in the lot who looks like one of the Beastie Boys wearing a titled cap, oversized shades, rockin the Air Jordans and is spinning techno beats out of the back of a black Escalade with 22″ spinners? Or just the opposite.

  13. Mitch Says:

and yeah the strange design was money. told about how he wrote it before he became a dad while his wife was preggo. both his kids were in the house so it may have been to them. he called them out then apologized to them after we all cheered for embarrassing them.

  14. Kenny Powers Says:

    @ Robear –

i didn’t know there was a soundcheck for the Pima show…it’s not listed at and i’m sorry you didn’t enjoy that show – goes to show opinions vary! so were you saying Trey was wasted at the show? couldn’t tell by his playing, that’s for sure.

    @ marco –

i love that 9.22 show too. i’l keep it in mind, but i’ve got a few requests to work on first. i also feel i should mix it up since i’ve done a bunch of ’99 lately (which i’ve been into lately). i also have a request for 9.29.99 Memphis from gratefulcub.

If only there was more time!

  15. EL Duderino Says:

    @ HH

I’m one of your Ray-Ban kids no WayFares here.

Not really into Beasties either I’m a little older than you would expect too.

  16. marcoesq Says:

    Thanks KP

  17. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    @el dude
I noticed your name listed as an attendee of the Third Ball show on Were you there or is that a placeholder for your collection? Just curious, as I always liked that show from the tape I had of it.

  18. HarryHood Says:

    @ Dude

So I assumed. I was just writing out my mental picture based on your posts and knowledge of recordings and sound quality. No offense taken I hope.

  19. lastwaltzer Says:

Just out of curiosty but how old are you guys?

  20. Mitch Says:

gonna speak for robear since hes teaching right now before we move a few pages. that soundcheck is something he got to hear because he was there early for waterwheel. the band did some impromptu jams about the band beating the road crew in touch football that day. one of those insider stories that wont reference.

rocked my waterwheel shirt at tab last night!

  21. SOAM Says:

Almost lost him is a little extreme….

is that song Samson Variation a take on a song by you know who??

When you say “that girl can really blow”-I can’t help it…

  22. Mitch Says:

thats highly personal and to be frank, none of your damn business.

i try to hide behind a vail of anonymity on here ya know. (25, will be 26 on the 26th!!!)

  23. HarryHood Says:

To be honest, based on your avatar, I picture you sitting in a bowling alley with free WIFI typing between frames and sipping a White Russian.

  24. lastwaltzer Says:
