The Bearsville Sessions

Bearsville Studios - Bearville, NY

Over the span of two years, Phish spent three different chunks of time at Bearsville Studios, in Bearsville, NY, recording music that would eventually be used for The Story of the Ghost. After The Island Run, Phish’s surprise four-night extravaganza in the spring of ’98, the band returned to Bearsville to record on their forthcoming album with the daunting task of whittling down a list upwards of 40 songs. A particularly creative period in the band’s history, The Bearsville Sessions finally resulted in two albums. Not only did Phish release The Story of the Ghost in the Fall of ’98, but later Page went through the tapes, selecting his favorite instrumental outtakes for what would become the ’99 release, The Siket Disc.

Famous for their improvisational nature, the band went into the studio and jammed, later selecting their favorite segments and creating songs out of them. Much like “The Blob” process used to create Billy Breathes, Phish was left with much more music than they could use at the time. Below are the complete studio outtakes from the band’s Story of the Ghost sessions from April – June 1998. Some songs emerged later, some not until 2009, and some haven’t. So enjoy this portrait of an experimental era in Phish history.

    @ El Dude

I downloaded the Charlie Miller upgrade last night per your comment yesterday. I’m a GD newbie to say the least, but I’m looking forward to checking it out tonight if I don’t get sucked to deep into the TAB show from last night. I listened to the Cornell show from ’77 that you all recommended and being the first live Dead show that I’ve listened to, I don’t have any clue why I waited so long to really give them a chance. That Jerry guy can really play. When is this Grateful Dead band touring again? I’d like to see them in person……

KP, AW, and El Duder- Thanks again for keeping me informed on source quality and in the know about remasters, new C. Millers, etc… Also, for the mediafire hookups (Week too). I just went digital about a year and a half ago, but will hopefully be able to pass some tunes back to y’all at some point. It has been a huge resource to have fellas like you in the community.

  3. SOAM Says:

if you want to hear good ABB-Get their woodstock 94 set-the brothers were SO FUCKING TIGHT when Warren and Dickey were rolling along together-in the early 90’s-ever since Dickey got the boot-they have not been the same=-for a while they flat out sucked-alternating guitarists every tour. Since Derek and Warren hooked up they are better but nowhere near as good as the early 90’s when Dickey and Warren ripped it up

  4. Leo Weaver Says:

@dude…I’ve watched the ABB dvd’s…mostly. I’ve watched the second set of the one with Trey and Page 3x now…that set is smokin’. Still gotta plow thru the rest of the one with Phil and Bob…about halfway thru the first set. I tend to get stuck on one thing ’til I wear it out before moving to the next.

@SOAM…IMO Let me Lie is a TAB song, I like it better that way I think.

Speaking of Feb birthdays, a good friend gave birth to her daughter last night (the 16th)

  15. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

here’s your cliff clavin fact of the day:

given a group of 23 people, there is a better than 50% chance that at least two people will share the same birthday. double the group size and the odds are approaching 99%. Crazy, huh?

  16. gratefulcub Says:

  17. voopa Says:

I feel old now. 42 in June.

  18. Leo Weaver Says:

    That looks fun @flarr…thanks dogg.

  19. SillyWilly Says:

My gf became an aunt (again)/god mother just two days ago on the 15th.

her sister (who had the baby) was born on the 16th and her cousin (also her best friend) was born on the 17th (thats today. better call her).

may and june must be the months of love.

  20. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

becoming a bear means you grow up. don’t ever grow up, man.

that’s because you are old :p

  21. Mr. Completely Says:

7/8/78 is a contender for show of the year and has needed an upgrade for ever. The musical argument between Phil and Jerry re: whether or transition to Other One or Eyes is one of the more interesting improvisational “conversations” you might hear

  22. lastwaltzer Says:

I believe jerry once said something to the effect of “An adult is someone whose made their mind up, I’ve never made mind up”

  23. Gus Says:

I will be turning…fifteen. in june.

  24. VoidBoy Says:

In Biblical years I must be, like 800 years old… well, perhaps 2 score and three years… (Lincoln came to mind for some reason…. hmmm.)

  25. Stupendous Says:

Gus, shouldnt you be in class or something?
maybe ur just checking in from ur iPad 😉
