Weekend Nuggets: March ’92
DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:
This weekend we see the band a few weeks into a year in which they would rarely stop touring. Other than September, the band was on the road for some of every month, earning their stripes the old-fashioned way. These early portraits of Phish hitting their stride along the eastern seaboard go out as reader requests to Chuck D (and Flava.) Have a good weekend, folks!

Jam of the Weekend:
“Bathtub Gin” 7.20.98 I
This high-key “Bathtub” opener foreshadowed the Riverport “Gin,” one of the jams of the summer, just a week later. Though due to the St. Louis gem, this Ventura “Gin” sometimes gets the short end of the stick. Recognize.

VIDEO OF THE WEEKEND:
Uncut 1992 MTV Interview w/ Trey and Mike on H.O.R.D.E. Tour
New Haven, the palace of swaying balconies. Way to do it right MINER.
Ventura Gin is sick! I was on the top row of the venue (the previous year they had extra PA speakers on the SBD tent that pointed right up there, but not this time, alas), and there is a metal pipe that sticks out about 8 feet above the top row…I remember holding on to that pipe while still standing on the bleachers during this Gin, with the ocean breeze wafting over the top of the venue, and saying to my crew, “I’m the king of the world!” Good times…
One friend and I continued on to Phoenix the next night, which was quite a haul, especially after doing the tour up to that point (Portland > Gorge > Shoreline – at least we had a homebase before and after Shoreline)…wish I could have continued on through TX, but seeing my longest run of shows (to this date) was pretty still satisfying at that point. Massive highlights throughout all 6 of those shows.
that interview is quite amusing even just visually.
@jdub: – reposting from other thread, in answer to your 90s dead question. I say spring and summer ‘90, then spring and summer ‘91
spring ‘90 was the best tour I saw top to bottom. the brent lineup at its peak with all the bustout material in rotation. crackin’.
spring ‘91 was all about the interplay between Jerry, Phil and Bruce, and a renewed emphasis on improvisation. very beautiful music this tour as you can hear in this mix if you are interested:

in particular the Eyes, Playin and Dark Star…
@voopa I’m out. email if you think that fileset is worthy of FLACification and I will do it tomorrow…
Thanks for the downloads and info as always Mr.C, I have always had trouble getting into 90s Dead since I wasn’t there and the late 60s and 70s has such a deep catalog of great shows for those who know the Dead through recordings instead of experience. I have tried hard to do the 80s and 90s but haven’t been able to fully explore. In all honesty I got into the Dead much more than Phish at the beginning. Even though Phish was touring and Jerry was dead, I became a fan of the 60s counterculture and of course GD was at the forefront of that, loved the fact that they were so apolitical. All the political revolution stuff was grand and necessary but in the end it don’t mean shit. Those guys are all yuppies now and buying into the same stuff they marched against. Damn Boomeritis, it’s a disease I tell ya
jdub, check out 10.1.94 Boston…one of the best I personally saw
One last thing and I am in bed. These videos are fantastic. Total awkward geekdom, and with a purpose. Tabitha is from their hometown. They are nervous but don’t care, Mike and his day glow and sunglasses. Love every minute.
Goodnight all. Mark it, the legend of BB grows tonight and you all should be proud!
Will do Phisherman, peace
Cool, C…I’ll try to gather all circulating sources this weekend and let you know.
listening to Tenacious D today – Wonderboy – and i was thinking about how the synth sounded like a very 99-00-esque Page effect… then i remembered it WAS PAGE! totally blew my mind.
maybe im just too high
glorious album
btw happy anniversary phish 3.0!
Happy One year to 3.0!! If only I was back at Hampton rather than working at 4:30 this morning.
Morning all!
Today will be fun! Bring the heat tonight Gordo!

Looks like a great set!
Wonder how the jamming was. I like seeing “Only A Dream” in the setlist
I am trying to find some reviews. If I find I will post. I did not attend this show, going tonight!
that Ventura show was sick. I remember a couple songs into the first set Phish picked up the pace and we were dancing hard on the dirt track of the speedway. I thought that Phish was trying to see how much dust we could kick up. Then into the car, everyone covered with dirt for the all night haul to Phoenix. Good times. Love the Phish!
Caption contest for today is what Fishman said before they snapped the picture at the top of the page.
“WE’RE ON DRUGS!!”
Haha this interview is classic! I’ve had it as a filler on a dvd for years. I love when Trey wants to just restart his answer to a question and of course the Trey/Mike shenanigans throughout. Great stuff.
So Mitch,
What do ya think? You jumping on a train tonight and heading down to New Haven?
I dont think its gonna work out. No way to leave at a reasonable time to get back. I dont wanna cut out some of the show to get back to NYC…
I hear ya. I would offer to crash at my house but I have a 2, 4 and 6 year old. By the time we got home from the show, they would probably be awake and there would be no point in going to sleep. Mine as well just stay up alll night!
These little bastards don’t let anyone sleep. You would wake up with make up on your face and little feet stuck up your nose and in your mouth!
So I actually get to listen to music at work today. How bout that gorge 99 show. phishows stream is crispy aud. mmmm
foot mouth! i’ve stuck my own foot in my mouth before.
…figureatively speaking of course.
