Weekend Nuggets: March ’92

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

This weekend we see the band a few weeks into a year in which they would rarely stop touring. Other than September, the band was on the road for some of every month, earning their stripes the old-fashioned way. These early portraits of Phish hitting their stride along the eastern seaboard go out as reader requests to Chuck D (and Flava.) Have a good weekend, folks!

Jam of the Weekend:

Bathtub Gin” 7.20.98 I

This high-key “Bathtub” opener foreshadowed the Riverport “Gin,” one of the jams of the summer, just a week later. Though due to the St. Louis gem, this Ventura “Gin” sometimes gets the short end of the stick. Recognize.

  1. jdub Says:

@Joe, they did do guyute with Trey in 09. The version I have is a bad AUD, curious to hear a proper recording.

  2. joe Says:

yeah, I was just wondering if a good source exists of that jdub. This one they are playing on Sirius right now sounds excellent quality wise. Can hear just enough of the heads in the background to get an understanding that it’s not your typical night at the symphony.

  3. joe Says:

a really beautiful piece of music too. Most symphony snobs (for lack of a better term) would be amazed that it was written by a “hippy, rock star”

  4. jdub Says:

It’s hard to get a sense how the tunes came acroos on my bad recording. They seem like they worked, but a lot nuances of the orchestra are lost.

  5. Lycanthropist Says:

would love it if some of you posted thoughts over at our blog:
let the rest of the band get to know you too!

^ They were. My mother, although not a ‘snob’, is a member of the symphony and loved that night…how could you not?

    Ticket Hunter…
I also have stumbled upon w bankx’s blog and am stunned by his brilliance. It’s the smug pretentiousness (.) that gets me.
Talking down to people is never okay and very often a punishable offense.
    As we’ve seen here.

Oscars has a nice feel to it…Steve Martin is great, nice piece on John Hughes…pretty much evert iconic film from my generation growing up had his stamp on it or was directed by him. (Ferris Bueller, Pretty in Pink, B’fast Club, Planes Trains Automobiles, European Vacation, Weird Science)
Made it okay to be a geek….
    True genius.

  11. neemor Says:

When you guys see a misspelling, how many of you look down at the keyboard to see how close the letter was to the correct one?

  14. Lycanthropist Says:

    damn this sand is killing…

it took em a while to get there but wolfmans > sand is pretty thick

  15. neemor Says:

The lasting image I have of Mike is him licking his lips for some reason.

See video one above at the :45 seond mark!

He did it last night a lot, too…
Maybe I need to pay attention to something else!

  16. joe Says:

  17. neemor Says:

Trey: “Bootlegging tapes is what made us who we am.”

  18. Lycanthropist Says:

thank you joe, that should prove to be a good resource

  19. SillyWilly Says:

    howdy, all!

im inoperative from the amount of chili I consumed with Cal and his girlfriend in Milwaukee this afternoon.

wanted to report another cool BB happening:

Saw The Chieftains with Cal and his girlfriend (she has a name, but Im always wary of anonymity issues) last night. They let me spend the night at their house and then we went to a chili cook-off. Just a great weekend.

Anyway, Cal and his girl are great people and Im very glad to have made their friendship.

  20. neemor Says:

Trey talking about the tape trees was an interesting point…
“Keeps us on our toes because (people will know it’s been done before…) Have to keep moving forward.”

    Taping made Phish.

  21. Lycanthropist Says:

i am loving that chili is becoming an official BB meet up food of sorts

  22. ChefBradford Says:

Lycan- I had a chance to get thru “Old Man Manitoba” (a CF favorite of mine) with the 3.4 show. Enjoyed it, but (keep in mind I’m listening on a somewhat shitty, dated PC speaker/sub set-up) I couldn’t hear you very well at all

  23. ChefBradford Says:

I thought the same thing, Lycan

  24. Leo Weaver Says:

“Who we am…” Classic. I just wrapped up those videos (again). I wonder if Trey has ever gone back to those, especially the last minute or two of the last video…interviewer asks, “so do you think you’ll be doing this in 20 years?” or something to that effect. Trey talks about seeing what happens as time goes on and marriages and families get thrown into the mix. Interesting to think about…”20 years” is just 2 years from now.

  25. flarrdogg Says:

‘chili is becoming an official BB meet up food of sorts’

    awesome
