Going Greek?

The Greek Theatre - Berkeley, CA

On the heels of the Telluride Town Council’s approval for the Phish shows for August 9-10, another gorgeous rumor rolled into the community – a four-night stand a Berkeley, California’s Greek Theatre.  Phish hasn’t visited this west coast, live music icon since their blistering tour closer in the summer of ’93. The rumored dates for this next dream-like scenario fall within the first week of August, just before Telluride.

The dates I initially heard, August 5-8, wouldn’t seem to make sense due to the necessary overnight commute to Telluride. Or perhaps these dates are real, and they are an attempt to keep excess fans out of Telluride. But the last time the band played a six-night run was some time in the early-’90s, and that just doesn’t seem feasible – at all. Needless to say, regardless of the actual dates, Phish may be visiting the Bay Area and not playing Bill Graham’s outdated and overcrowded Shoreline Amphitheatre for the first time in over a decade, and even the chance of that is great news!

The Greek Theatre - Berkeley, CA

Once again, the immediate mission becomes tickets. If you thought Telluride’s 9000 person limit was small, slice off another 500, and you’ve got the Greek Theatre’s 8,500 capacity. (But considering that 1,500 tickets per night will be set aside for “locals” in Telluride, it seems that Colorado would be the harder ticket.) An aesthetically gorgeous, general admission, locale atop a hill on the campus of University of California, The Greek Theatre is designed after an actual Greek amphitheatre; rounded and made of stone. There are no seats, just stone bleachers and lawn seating somewhere up in the stratosphere, though the lawn is coupled with a stunning vista of San Francisco Bay.

Shoreline '98

It’s about time the band made a stop in the Bay Area, proper. Not since 1996’s visit to Daly City’s Cow Palace, has Phish played anywhere besides Shoreline, (aside from one special night at The Fillmore). But a multi-night return to The Greek would make up for all those empty years in droves. This run should remain “in theory” for a while, because once Mike wraps up his solo tour, Phish will drop their June dates, leaving us guessing about August for quite a while. But as long as we are guessing, How about two or three nights at The Gorge to open the west coast swing? Then head down for four in Berkeley and then out to Telluride. What year is this again?

These intimate settings continue one of the best trends of Phish 3.0, the “we’ll play wherever the fuck we want” factor. From the Fox Theatre to Fenway, and from Asheville to Indio, and from the band’s current focus is clearly on quality of experience, rather than maximizing financial gain. With four nights at The Greek, the band would sell 34,000 tickets; with two nights at Shoreline they would swarf that with 44,000. The bottom line is that Phish doesn’t care about getting bigger anymore. Their fanbase is here to stay for as long as they will playing music, so they might as well make their concert environs ideal as possible for everyone  involved. So far, so good, and with a potential return to The Greek, it’s getting better all the time.

I hope everyone has a great day!

I love everyone’s suggestions for summer tour. It gives this a Christmas like feeling. My imagination soars.

I was quite confused this morning to overhear a co-worker talking about Red Rocks, so I meandered over and it turns out that it had nothing to do with the Dead or Phish. He was discussing Rock Climbing … Weird.

@KWL, you’re perspective on philosphical thought is right on. All the significant theory out there have elementS of truth that are like you said “another tool in the toolbox”. No one has been or will be able to describe the whole of the universe, or our civilization for that matter, in a concsice theory. It is too complex. Even Quantum physics has reached a point of limitation. They can’t even prove that there is a single piece of matter that is by itself whole. science has proven that science (and analytical thought) can’t prove everything. The reason we are even here is up for debate, straight up evolution theories are filled with holes, it is statistically impossible for the genetic mutations that would need to occur to get us from microbes to conscious humans. Creationism isn’t the answer. There must be a universal energy driving manifestation and evolution. An energy that mystics seem to understand but confuse analytical thinkers because it’s outside the grasp of thought and can only be experienced. Hence just live your life and experience it in the infinite moment.

The DOTD is a must have for collectors of this classic period. I requested it for all of you.

Essentially the last Boulder show, this show started with a bang and did not let up until the doors opened into the chilly wintery spring night air. MVP was Mike, look at the set list.

Mike had a wig on for the entire first set and then moved the wig to the head of the bass for set two.

Fish’s suit was too short in the sleeve and legs and he was sporting a matching fedora style hat again too small. Funny shit.

Mike’s Groove is the epic and still holds a special place for me.

    Don’t sleep on it!

The night before in Vail was pretty sweet taboot with a crazy full blown CWTA,E out of My friend my friend

    Gracias, Señor Miner!

was he talking about Red Rocks in Nevada? there’s not a whole lot of good rock climbing at Red Rocks in CO. better stuff abounds elsewhere in that area!

  7. ColonelJoy Says:

Noticed that there are no summer fest rumors….this is curious, as before 09′, summer fests were a given. Are we in store for another fall tour fest? Do they prefer the lack of hassles by cutting the attendance?

    I predict T-Ride is a 3 set event…at least one of the days…Possum opener

  8. Halden Says:

He was talking Nevada. He is heading to vegas next week and is planning his climbing accordingly

  9. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

thought so. there’s some phenomenal routes there in Red Rock Canyon

  10. jdub Says:

Red rocks outside of Vegas are a destination point for climbers, lots of gnarly climbs that make your nuts hibernate in your stomach.

I hope Bethel Woods happens, I would love to get out of the urban sheds and have an east meets west phishing expedition.

  16. Kaveh Says:

@JMelby. OK. I’ll bite. You and me are in the same boot, as The Greek 1993, did further solidify our belief that Phish was a band to keep close tabs on back then and this belief has held with beautiful colors all the way to the present. I’m debating which one to see of this run. To return to the Greek would be epic and a lot easier to get to and probably cheaper. And like you said 4 is great than 2. Telluride would be an amazing experience just due to the surroundings. The only problem, of course, is tickets. So I am going to first hope that these rumors come true. And second that I can get tickets to one of these two venues. There really is a win/win anyway you slice it. Although 4>2.

    Unrelated, I found a matrix of 12.30.09 – you want a copy?

  17. zzyzx Says:

This rumor is only good for east coasters. In addition to your 13,000 local shows, you can enter the ticket lottery and maybe plan a west coast trip or two. Meanwhile those of us who live in the western half of the US are likely to get shut out of any show within two time zones of us. Play some wacky venues out east and give us a chance to see an actual show.

  18. neemor Says:

I just got UPS…everything looks in order.
    You are the man!
    Made my month….

  19. neemor Says:

    I feel for you zzyzx…
My fingers are crossed for a Portland/Washington show…for you.

  20. jdub Says:

I am well aware of the show going opportunities us east coasters have and think it is fantastic that phish is giving westies some significant events. Another example of Phish 3.0 spreading the love.

  21. voopa Says:

    Wasn’t me neemor…I haven’t shipped anything since I ebay’d a bunch of stuff 5 years ago. I’ll take the credit tho…

    llfa @ zzyzx!

  22. halcyon Says:

Do you think a new album will be released this year, perhaps this fall?

  23. neemor Says:

    I meant verno, of course…
    Voopa, you’re pretty cool, too!

  24. zzyzx Says:

“I am well aware of the show going opportunities us east coasters have and think it is fantastic that phish is giving westies some significant events.”

Doesn’t do us any good if we can’t get tickets. If those are the only shows of the summer, I’ll have the option of calling in favors or not seeing Phish until 2011…

  25. jdub Says:

    Neemsbane, your thinking of Verno
