Weekend Nuggets: Mike’s Songs

Photo: (T.Wetzel)

As Mike wraps up his eight-show mini tour this weekend, let’s turn our attention to the few recordings that have been posted. Along with the tour opener, these are the only shows that have surfaced on line for now. I haven’t gotten a chance to listen to these yet, but reports from the road have been glowing. If you haven’t had a chance to check out Mike’s band, grab these for your weekend enjoyment! If you do get to see a show and would like to write a reader review, send your piece to mrminer@phishthoughts.com.

Lycan–I don’t see that 10.26 date in the archive; is there somewhere else you’ve got shows stashed? I admit, I’m a Nirvana obsessive. (on that note: Future Rock ended the show last night with a cover of “Breed”, I love what they do with it) But I’ll be checking out a lot more CF either way; the 3.4 show is fantastic front to back.

–and on that note: there is a guitar tease at about 3:30ish of “Camba” that is driving me insane. I know it’s something in my collection, probably something I haven’t listened to in ages. It’s a tasty little riff and I just cannot place it. If you can clue me in you could save me days of torture.

Bummed that there’s no recording of the encore, though! Looks frikkin choice! Anyway, I’m going to move on to 2.26 for the time being; I think I see a Radiohead cover and I can’t stay away…

  2. butter Says:

BK did you listen to Phil’s bday show yet?

  3. Lycanthropist Says:

the show is 10.24 not 10.26

trust me that is the one to check out!

i will check into the camba now

  4. Marshall Says:

Assume it’s 7/11/99 – listening to it now from Phishows – clocks in at around 18 minutes, I’m buckling the seatbelt.

  5. Lycanthropist Says:

hmm… not hearing anything at 3:30 except a little keyboard solo…

  6. Marshall Says:

Wait – had to track back to “Chalkdust Prelude” whatever that is, that sits in the spot just before Chalkdust Torture.

  7. pagesidehighschool Says:

The camden show was sick in 04:
Set 1: Wilson, You Enjoy Myself -> Ghost > Maze -> Catapult -> Maze, The Moma Dance, Horn, Pebbles and Marbles

Set 2: Piper > Sneakin’ Sally through the Alley, Cavern > Limb By Limb, Julius, Rock and Roll, Scents and Subtle Sounds

    Encore: Lawn Boy, Frankenstein

  8. pagesidehighschool Says:

I had a backstage pass to this show, I should have never gone to coventry, and ended on a high note instead

  9. Lycanthropist Says:

and thank you very much Cal

I am glad you enjoyed it!

  10. Marshall Says:

This Camden show clocks in just a hair under 5 hrs. Can that be right? It looks like a 90 minute first set but then the second set plus encore is almost 3 hours.

Was anyone from here at this show? damn!

  11. ChefBradford Says:

Marshall, for some reason a lot of the show/song timings on phishows are way longer than actual time

  12. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

The Phishows timings are always way off, sometimes by 2x the song length (they listed the 2009 Albany “Seven Below” as 50mins long)

That might be why the show looks so long

  13. butter Says:

    @pageside – it didn’t end 🙂

    You decide what it contains
    How long it goes
    But this remains
The only rule is it begins
    Happy happy oh my friend

  14. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

    I’m out for tonight

    Goodnight everybody

  15. Marshall Says:

    OK, that makes more sense.

Well played @ Butter. Was listening to that song on Joy yesterday and the lyrics come through so strong. What a friendship Tom and Trey have.

  16. ChefBradford Says:

    #Line had me at hello

Well. Had me at happy, anyway

  17. Marshall Says:

OK, Cheff – I’ve listened to the Camden ’99 Chalkdust. Now its your turn to spin the one from Keyspan ’04. I think you’ll agree that the Brooklyn version goes places that Chalkdust normally doesn’t go.

  18. Lycanthropist Says:

yeh i was a big fan of numberline from the start…

chef.. i am starting to really wonder about our similarities.

  19. halcyon Says:

Awesome Poster Butter. Love Phil’s energy. I wish I have that energy when I am 70.

  20. Marshall Says:

Numberline had me at Hampton. I think most people dug it from the beginning. It got even better when they added the bridge.

  21. ChefBradford Says:

Lycan, I know, I’ve thought about that as well. Even the towns in which we live share a number of similarities. Front Street?

Marshall- sounds good. I’m going to take a drag, then come back and hit that up. I’m assuming phishows has it

  22. Marshall Says:

Yep – Phishows is the only version I’ve heard. Beware that its not super high quality and there are some talkers. I’m streaming it as I type right now.

  23. ChefBradford Says:

before I run out, I have to say that #Line hooked me when I heard the Rothbury show a couple days after it happened. Part of it was hearing Trey talk about the origins of the song, part of it was the rumors that were beginning to come out about the reunion, part of it was the fact that Mike was up there with him, part of it was that Trey jokingly(?) told the crowd all they needed now was a drummer and keyboard player

Mostly it was #Line that got me though 🙂

  24. gavinsdad Says:

@pageside: funny you mention that camden show in 04….lotta people on here talk about taking breaks over 2.0, or at somepoint along the way…i went to that Camden show and i can’t remember a note of it. i was clean/sober so i can’t blame anything in that regard…i had a good time at Coney earlier in June…and I think i had legitimately checked out at that point…i remember giving my Coventry tix to a friend in the trench between the lawn and the seats…no interest…i wasn’t even that down deep in the trey/band drug abuse plotline…i just knew it was quits so i avoided the mud and called it quits that nite instead.

a year or so ago i asked my friend if i was there since i couldn’t find the stub and he was like “we got the scents that nite”. nothing registered.

i’ll go back and listen to it. all shows surprise me on playback.

  25. Marshall Says:

If anyone hasn’t heard it, you really should check out Chalkdust from Keyspan Park night 2 – 6.18.2004 – it’s totally freakin’ awesome.

MINER – this one qualifies for inclusion on the next TTFF, IMHO.
