Weekend Nuggets: New Year’s Run ’94

12.31.94

DOWNLOAD OF THE WEEKEND:

When thinking of New Year’s Run ’94, people generally think of two things – The Providence Bowie on the 29th and Tropical Hot Dog Night on the 31st. While the odd numbered nights may have stolen history’s spotlight, the 28th and 30th are two shows that routinely get glossed over. Philly’s “Mike’s Groove” and, more specifically New York’s “Tweezer,”nights brought some of the most engaging music of the run, while “Reba” and “Stash”provided first set highlights, respectively. Enjoy the weekend, and best of luck with the rest of the ticket chase.

  1. Prince Nabby Says:

I’ll take an extended ASIHTOS over pretty much Light. Just my personal take.

  2. Prince Nabby Says:

pretty much ANY Light. Sorry. Bad typing.

  3. Mr. Completely Says:

@Nabby I think Stealing Time could venture into the same open or abstract spaces as Ocean Sing…

    @Miner –
“but to be honest, i dont see phish playing 2 festis in a 3 months period. ”

no, I don’t think so either – but only counting real Phish fests that they run themselves, not counting ACL which would really just be a show for them. Does that mean you still think Indio is happening? Sorry if I missed a previous mention of this.

  4. Mr. Completely Says:

I prefer the darker tones of Ocean Sing to Light, certainly, when it comes to the actual song

but Light def. proved itself as jam launch-pad in 09

the best ones were among the most interesting jams of the year and even when it didn’t really lift off, they always at least tried – and that’s the main thing – if they’re at least diving in, it’s ok if they don’t hit the jackpot every time

  5. Mr. Completely Says:

basically, if I’m at a show and I hear the first notes of Light, I’m basically going to have the same reaction as if it were the start of a Tweezer or something – “OK, here we go”

if they start Ocean Sing, I’m flipping out – it has sick open jam potential AND it’s one of my favorite songs in and of itself

  6. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Mr. C – I respect your (and everyone else’s) opinions/beliefs. I really do. But for me, Jesus is The Way. If I’m wrong, then worst case, I’ve believed in something that isn’t true (i.e., I’m a little crazy). Best case, … Well you know the story.

I see the arguments for and against and am comfortable with my choice.

Happy Easter BBoarders. Peace be with you.

  7. Mr.Palmer Says:

I’d like to see Waves played a few more times this year.

  8. Robear Says:

    nice Marshall.

Jesus or no Jesus, lots of Pagan celebrations became Christian holidays.

hey, they know how to party.

  9. Mr. Completely Says:

    Peace to you too @Marshall!

Not trying to talk anyone out of anything, just representing some other beliefs for a different perspective.

  10. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Waves from IT is one of my top 5 favs.

  11. Mr. Completely Says:

@Palmer, I realized something over this past weekend.

Waves is my favorite Phish song.

    bring it on!

  12. Robear Says:

Mike liked ‘Waves’ with Billy K.

  13. Mr.Palmer Says:

Eagles trade McNabb to Redskins? Really? in division. this has got to be the dumbest move ever for Philly. McNabb will torture them for the rest of his career.

  14. dyda Says:

magnitude 6.9. bet that made dinner interesting for a lot of people.

limestone you say? that would be quite a treat. think they could still draw 70,000 up there? there was a piece on the phish.net blog about how the three previous loring fests were preceded by tours that left the northeast mostly out of the loop and suggested that was why so many people (great) went. i don’t know if i agree with that, but it was worth noting.

i agree that one fest a year is all we should hope for. the recent nice weather has gotten me reminiscing about 8 and what luck it is that we got a festie at all. not going to happen, but how about one at the gorge? they do sasquach there…

  15. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Yeah. I knew you weren’t trying to influence anyone. It just gave me a chance to tell people on here where I stand. I refrain from religious discussion on here unless it’s relevant.

Like I said – I do respect everyone’s own beliefs.

  16. Mr.Palmer Says:

Waves your favorite Phish tune. Wow, Mr.C, wasn’t expecting that one. Great song, great jam..

  17. Prince Nabby Says:

Hi MrC: Your input is always so judicious and measured. I like Stealing Time well enough, and I don’t doubt that it could be jammed out, because, frankly, I think Phish could jam out anything that cared to work over in that fashion, but I listened to every version played in 2009, and it struck me as a cut not unlike While My Guitar Gently Weeps, that serves as a platform for Trey to shred over a fairly simple progression. They *could* jam it out — and we know not to be underestimate Phish’s capacity for unpredictability — but I’m not sure that they will.

Light, by contrast, seems to have been contrived quite self-consciously as a jam vehicle, and in this sense it is very much of a piece with Tweezer. t’s just that I tended not to find too many of the Light jams compelling. Now, I know that a lot of people on the board feel differently, and more power to them, but this my own opinion. Part of it, too, might be because I disliked intensely the whale call, and it often made a heavy appearance in Light.

Regarding ASIHTOS, all I can say is Amen, Brother. Beautiful song and, with SSS, one of the coolest from 2.0.

  18. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

@ robear And Mr. C – not denying the power of the Catholic church in effecting control by manipulating the calendar at all.

  19. dyda Says:

ok so if ACL is the equivalent to their bonnaroo appearance last year then that still leaves the door open

  20. Mr. Completely Says:

I do want people who don’t know such things to have the information. I am trying to influence people, in the sense of thinking that provoking people to learn more and not accept the status quo is always good. I’m not trying to influence you or anyone else that already holds settled beliefs. I never argue religion with believers of any kind.

I don’t believe anything including the evidence of my own senses. I have suspicions and a small array of apparent facts that haven’t yet been proven untrue.

  21. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

For the record – I question everything, including my own beliefs, all the time.

I enjoy the information too, Mr. C. Knowledge is power.

  22. butter Says:

it seems like Indio has been chopped if the Maine thing pans out

i was just dreaming of fest 10 on 10-10-10, and another California festival

it really would surprise me if they actually did Indio again due to multiple factors

    1) low ticket sales –

they spend an exorbitant amount of energy planning and setting these things up. I know 3.0 is mucho about “the love of the game” but there is a major difference between playing a small venue and throwing a full blown festival for fun

    2) location –

this factor ties directly back into reason 1. with an east coast festi attendance would be double

all this being said , i really hope i am wrong and get to experience Phish again at a blissful festival in Indio, CA

  23. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

The place I start with questioning it is the fact that it is passed down by my parents. But, that can go both ways.

I look forward to hopefully knowing the real truth one day (when this life is over).

  24. Prince Nabby Says:

I asked a few pages back about the credibility of the ACL rumor. Can anyone speak to that? My gf is a former Austinite, and we’re trying to figure out how many birds we could bank on killing at once . . .

  25. dyda Says:

even the album version of ‘waves’ is great.

at first ‘light’ was one of my least favorite of the new batch of songs, but after seeing the fall tour versions (and hearing the gorge one) i have been converted.

hadn’t thought about ‘stealing time’ like that before, but now that you mention it, yeah i can see the stylistic similarities to ‘wmggw.’

how do people feel about ‘twenty years later’? i think that one may be my favorite off the album. will they play ‘saw it again’ this year? how often will ‘tte’ show up?
