Weekend Nuggets: New Year’s Run ’94
DOWNLOAD OF THE WEEKEND:
When thinking of New Year’s Run ’94, people generally think of two things – The Providence Bowie on the 29th and Tropical Hot Dog Night on the 31st. While the odd numbered nights may have stolen history’s spotlight, the 28th and 30th are two shows that routinely get glossed over. Philly’s “Mike’s Groove” and, more specifically New York’s “Tweezer,”nights brought some of the most engaging music of the run, while “Reba” and “Stash”provided first set highlights, respectively. Enjoy the weekend, and best of luck with the rest of the ticket chase.

I actually like the song “Round Room”- it can get out there for sure.
DocGanz – great call on the 03 PA show, very unique show, enjoyed listening to that on
and thanks Mitch for passing it along
the song “Round Room” and me don’t mix
the album has a few keepers for sure
yeah butter, i didn’t think i’d get much support in that opinion.
butter, how about the Vegas ’03 ‘Round Room’? Face melting?
Butter
I thought of it the other day after Miners “Skip show” column. I remember alot of people had jumped off right before and missed it. Maybe low ticket sales brought the bustouts
from his wiki page: “Marc’s favorite sports team are the Jets and Yankees. He enjoys the beach, snowboarding, smoking pot, spending time with his family, and making fun of skiers (especially the ones with the short skis).” heh wonder who wrote that
wasn’t really feeling the philly sleep again but i really liked the 8 acoustic debut. think it was more a matter of setlist placement plus unfamiliarity to most in the arena. (was wearing a lemieux jersey that night [quite a ballsy move in philly if i do say so myself] to answer trey’s richards from the previous night) i’d like to see another phish version of drifting. like the chorus on that one. the acoustic secret smile was choice.
and yeah mike said in a recent interview that he hopes the band can move away from the older material some. i like bowie as much as the next guy but it did start to get a little old when i saw it almost every other show. i think it was mostly the fact that bowie stayed strictly formulaic type I all year. i don’t think many will complain about yem ‘5 times a day’ though.
spices won’t come back but i liked that one. discern kinda … could see trey really letting loose with the whale on that one. i like walls of the cave but think i understand it’s absence. how about friday … can you imagine the reaction that’d get? thunderhead needs to come back.
i want to see seven below in the worst way.
I’d like to see Waves played a few more times this year.
^ Agreed.
I would also like to see Round Room come back. The Vegas 03 version reminds me of Dark Star in some way, at least that is what I was feeling when seeing it there. It just went…
Also, if there are any GD fans here, that new Road Trips Texas 1971 is awesome. I haven’t been this floored in a long time when listening to new GD. Get it!
i need to see a Crosseyed. Never seen one. ’10 is the year.
@Robear….just commented on Round Room and now saw your post…Face melting indeed!
yeah cactus songs are always a plus. wonder if round room will return in fall.
birds in lessser rotation seems to be working for it cause hartford and philly were tight.
that second set of philly 1 was nuts. (first set was tasty too) i’m not a tte hater but i did consider bagging it and heading home early when it became clear that it was going to essentially close that show. glad i stuck around for the encore to get to see sweet nuthin.
Mr. P–glad you dug Wilco! That ambient/techno jam sounds like “Spiders (Kidsmoke)”. Great tune. I had the same experience re: dancing, but I was in a good spot to just say piss off and dance my ass off anyway without actually bothering anyone. No idea why this is the case at Wilco shows. Never knew about the whole anti-camera thing; you sure it wasn’t the venue??
And yeah…Glenn Kotche is one of the greatest drummers around right now. I realized it definitively being able to actually watch him closely last time I saw Wilco. He is an avant-garde artist who combines madness with delicacy like nobody else.
Probably out for the night…have a great start to your weeks, BBers! Cheers.
I’m out too. We’ll all chat in the AM…good night everyone! Big game tomorrow!!
Mr Miner, I was shut out of the lotto but a friend of mine has a pair of creek lawns for each night that he’d probably be willing to put up for those pavs. I’ve heard creek lawns are abundant now, but if it’d help your case as well as ours, carpe diem haha.
ryanschloffel at gmail, good sir
ASIHTOS and Twenty Years Later are both songs with unlimited type 2 potential IMO. I love ASIHTOS from SPAC 6-19-04. One of my favorite jams of 2.0. Hints at the song’s potential. I thought after the Deer Creek bust out from last summer they were gonna get it into the rotation and really start to stretch it out. Twenty Years later: After the last ‘Inside this silence see, all are free all are free, Second Time Around’ refrain then blast into outer space. Thought it was gonna happen at Gorge this past summer. I believe it will happen at some point.
Palmer- Glad to hear you enjoyed Wilco. A little something different is always good. I’ve seen them 4-5? times and thought it was great. I also really dig the studio albums- especially A Ghost Is Born with all the weird ambient shit and feedback. Works for me.
Robear- Jerryaoke? Hilarious.
Cal- Word. Great minds.
Uncle eb aka Ryan – Aka twix chef. Finally!
@dyda: thoughts on “middle of the road”. I was really pleased with it’s arrangement and performance at the gorge. Most people haven’t responded to me when I’ve talked about it. I understand, it’s easily overlooked in those frames, but I felt there was something uniquely phishy about the transistions between verses. In my head, I’ve crafted a way that they could really extend that one.
“Butter – isn’t that movie about the real thing from Judas Priest?”
yep.
“jeff mattson has taken the jerry spot in DSO.”
Stu from Melvin’s JGB band is doing some DSO shows.
He’s the best of the FJ’s

“the song “Round Room” and me don’t mix”
@Ro:
“butter, how about the Vegas ‘03 ‘Round Room’? Face melting?”
that jam was pretty interesting, but I agree about the song. Does not work for me.
I did like Middle of the Road though.
count me in the McNabb non-believer camp
just never saw a championship QB in him
however he could be the stable older veteran to build a team around while grooming the proverbial QB of the future
at least we’re done with Campbell I hope
Right back at ya marshall…. look forward to hanging again one day,
Donovan to the Redskins ?!? WTF! Crazy move, NFC east just got more interesting.
Wait, “we”, Mr. C?
Didn’t know you were a Redskins fan!
I was raised to be a fan of the Chesapeake Bay Region Indigenous Persons, yes
haven’t really been able to call myself a fan in the Snyder years
can’t deal with the team name anymore either
I still hope they recover one day but can’t really claim to be a fan anymore…the main remnant of that is that I still hate the cowboys
Don’t we all hate the Cowboys though Mr. C? Well, definitely us Niners fans do!
