A Summer Finale?

The Gorge '09 (A. Headington)

One lingering question regarding summer tour remains, even after all the tickets have gone on sale: Where will the tour actually end? If we are to believe things as they stand, Phish will play their west coast and Midwestern shows, and then invite everyone back the east coast for two random midweek shows at Jones Beach. This plan seems just a tad strange, leaving everybody hanging in the New York area after a Wednesday night finale. Since when has summer tour ended on a Wednesday? This routing, however, does leave the door wide open for a day off on Thursday followed by a weekend multi-night farewell. And there have been some rumors floating around.

One of the scenarios that has been circulating in cyberspace has Phish making another trek up to Limestone, Maine to put an exclamation point on summer 2010 in old-school fashion. While the timing seems to work, with the possibility of one or two days between Jones Beach and a potential festival, the question remains if this mature incarnation of Phish will bring their traveling caravan and their families up to the edge of America for a weekend party. A relic of times gone by, arguments both for and against a return to the hallowed Air Force Base in Loring, Maine make sense. On one had, Limestone is piece of Phish history, defining many summer weekends, and the band’s return to prominence wouldn’t be fully complete without a 3.0 festival at Limestone. We had The Great Went and Lemonwheel in the first go-round, and IT in the second. It is only natural to head back to the vast magical playground of legend, allowing east coast fans to drive, not fly cross country, to a Phish festival.

10.30.09 - Indio

That being said, that was then and this is now. Limestone is a sacred slice of Phish history, a place in time and space where pieces of our hearts and souls reside forever. Those days of traffic, camping, rainstorms, Northern sunsets, and endless blue skies can never be recreated, so why even try? Phish is older and so is their fanbase, we’ve been there and done that – thrice. And who wants to deal with the logistics of getting up all the way up there again? Plus, without a party-based scene for the band, what would be the perks of being in the middle of nowhere for a couple of nights, when they can stay in posh hotels playing elsewhere. With stronger rumors of Indio on the horizon for October, it’s hard to believe that Phish will throw two festivals in three months, and with the ease, bliss, and resorts surrounding Southern California’s Empire Polo Fields, why would they try anything else?

Jones Beach "Stadium"

An original set of dates that leaked just before the official tour announcement included two Radio City shows following Jones Beach. However, any chatter of a two-night stand at New York City’s iconic theatre has fizzled out. Unless things are being kept incredibly under wraps, the likelihood of these materializing seems very slim. So the question remains, are we bidding adieu in the stadium surroundings of Jones Beach, or will something be added to end an extensive summer in style? A leg that features Phish’s marquee shows of summer – The Greek and Telluride – and their two most classic summer venues in Deer Creek and Alpine, deserves a better ending than the overcrowded and over-patrolled environs of Jones Beach. But whether or not anything will actually be added to the tour is completely up in the air. But for now, the rumor mill spins on.

Quite intriguing indeed! I hope if anything happens I’ll actually be able to be there!

Oh, also, very cool Phish moment earlier:
My roommate is a hip-hop fan, but has liked some of the endless Phish I’ve been playing, so I figured I’d lay the Tweezer > California Love > Tweezer on him. This was my second time listening to this particular jam of Phish lore, and the first time I’d known it was coming, but I didn’t know what it would sound like. On my second go around, I noticed that, starting around the 3:25 mark, the band foreshadows the California Love Jam by each switching to the appropriate tones and effects for a bit of California Love teaser jam to start the improve section right there!

Might be common knowledge (or wrong…), I dunno, but still, a real real cool thing to figure out…

(Oh, and my roommate dug it)

I’d really like to see an “end of summer” Festival. That’d be a nice bookend on the summer as you said

    Here’s to hoping!

  3. harpua77 Says:

Although I ‘m thinking its an East Coast end-of-summer festival, I could easily be wrong. Regardless, I bet the announcement for end of summer/next festival will happen at the end of Phish3D. Imagine the words “Come join us August 20, 21, & 22 in Limestone, ME” floating in front of your eyes after 2+ hours of 3 dimensional facemelting…

  4. Willowed Says:

If they announce an end of the summer festi, I will have to sell all my individual shows in order to go. My wife and work will kill me.
So if they do announce you guys can have my:
Hartford, SPAC, Great W. and Jones Beach Tickets!
I am not missing a festi!

    mornin’ all.

Imagine the words “Come join us August 20, 21, & 22 in Limestone, ME” floating in front of your eyes after 2+ hours of 3 dimensional facemelting…

I really like that idea, harpua77. kind of like how they “announced” Miami 2009 with the ad in the playbill at *8*. I will now be expecting this great idea to come to fruition when I am rocking it in Revere in two weeks.

  6. Willowed Says:

    TIII
Did you ever land that hotel room for JB? (Freeport Boatel) I remember you mentioning that was your anniversary weekend.
My wife and I are using those shows as a weekend getaway as well!

  7. gavinsdad Says:

i just might be able to sell something like this in at the end of Aug. it’d be even better to get Indio in Oct tho cause more time will have elapsed between shows…always a good thing to soften up the wife.

I’d only gotten up to Limestone for the Went and I treasure that “schlep” and my time there with friends and music. Would love to do it again.

And missing Indio was a kick in the nuts the first time i saw a single picture of the event, let alone the music. really gonna have to put it into overdrive if they do something like this.

  8. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    @willowed
yeah, I’m in that same hotel for both nights. thanks for the tip! the guy was really friendly and we got in prior to the 2010 rates so it’ll be around $120/night. someone up here found me on the ticket exchange too so I have tickets for both nights now. our actual anniversary is the first night and we have seats in the back of 5L (pretty much right in the middle of the venue) for that one. can’t wait!

  9. Angryjoggerz Says:

It seems like Phish 3.0 would not be down with the cluster that is Limestone. Phish 3.0 (aka Phish for in your 3.0’s) has a limited schedule, has cash and does not want to sit in a car for a day waiting to get to a concert. Just saying.

  10. gavinsdad Says:

would like to be able to meet some BB peeps at JB and dunno if i’ll be able to pull off a beach dealie like Purplehumpback has been talking about if only because of time. wonder if a parking lot section regroup might suffice?

  11. gavinsdad Says:

@AJ – you in your 30s? I can’t keep up with everyone. i know there are many many BB people in their 30s, with kids, perhaps married or cohabitating etc…

  12. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    @G Dad
I’m thinking JB will be a good one for meeting up with BB folk, especially if it is the end of tour.

  13. Willowed Says:

TIII Nice work. It will be a fun one.
JB Parking Lot is massive and they let you park where ever you want. They have long light poles with Numbers and Letters for sections.
There will be a BB meetup at the JB…there is no doubt!
Very easy to meet up with crews!

  14. zzyzx Says:

I blogged about this on phish.net, but during the years where Phish played Limestone, they did that as a replacement for a NE summer tour. They played everywhere else with only one or two token shows in the northeast and none at all near New England.

With the northeast already oversaturated to the point where most of the shows haven’t sold out, how do you get 70k people to drive to the tip of northern Maine when you can’t even sell out Spac or Hartford?

  15. gavinsdad Says:

word TypeIII. you making one of those Camdens? I think you’re up in the Boston area so I assume you’ll be getting to the other NE stuff as well (SPAC, Htfd, GWoods)?

i’m definitely gonna take the lead on a Camden meetup…I threw out the idea of a Friday BBQ that will still get us over to the show on time (i’m 10 mins from the parking lot) but there is also this bar in Philly called The Druids Keep (also under 10 mins from the venue) that is kind of beyond the law, if you get my gist, that has an outdoor seating area, fine beers, pool and darts and that could be an excellent pre-gamer (and post gamer) too.

  16. Willowed Says:

    @ angry
That’s why we will need to rent hellicopters and parachute into the venue.

  17. gavinsdad Says:

solid point Timer. different fanbase these days. i’ve always been somewhat in line with your point about creating a hunger for the Indio destination, via the dearth of Summer (proper) W. Coast shows.

  18. zzyzx Says:

Unfortunately I got yet another negative confirmation of Indio last night meaning the west coast will be getting all tension and no release…

  19. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    @Gdad

the week phish is in New England is the week my family is in Avalon so it’ll end up being a little disjointed for me. I’ll hit 1st night Hartford and 1st night Camden but miss out on SPAC (which sucks because my sister lives in town and it makes it that much easier) and Great Woods (which sucks because I used to live about 10 minutes from there and have a wonderful history with that venue). no summer travel for tour this year, but we’ll hit those two JBs and then see what Icculus has in store for us on the festival front.

  20. pagesidehighschool Says:

maybe they’ll go back to Coventry, and blow off some steam

  21. AbePhroman Says:

I would like an east coast fest please. I’m sure Indio is great, but give me a break. The phans back east want a fest too.

  22. purplehumpbackwhale Says:

i’m pretty pumped to have tour-ender tickets in hand… but at the same time who wouldnt want to see a festi? im still hoping on that Pocono Raceway rumor from a few months back… thatd be nice.

  23. AbePhroman Says:

They should return to Coventry and redo that mess.

  24. BTB Says:

I think PH 3.0 should skip the Limestone. As much as I love that place, it’s too much of a hassle/mess.

Indio had raving reviews. Either do Indio or find a spot in the NE that can host like it.

    2 cents.

  25. nonoyolker Says:

Just thinking of Limestone traffic gave me an icy chill up my spine… Impossible to miss a festy though
Not sure if Phish 3.0 is into the hassle that would come with it. They seem eager to play new venues and try new things. Not sure Limestone is in line with their mindset.
Would be something to hear Phishy goodness on that sacred ground again though
