A Summer Finale?

The Gorge '09 (A. Headington)

One lingering question regarding summer tour remains, even after all the tickets have gone on sale: Where will the tour actually end? If we are to believe things as they stand, Phish will play their west coast and Midwestern shows, and then invite everyone back the east coast for two random midweek shows at Jones Beach. This plan seems just a tad strange, leaving everybody hanging in the New York area after a Wednesday night finale. Since when has summer tour ended on a Wednesday? This routing, however, does leave the door wide open for a day off on Thursday followed by a weekend multi-night farewell. And there have been some rumors floating around.

One of the scenarios that has been circulating in cyberspace has Phish making another trek up to Limestone, Maine to put an exclamation point on summer 2010 in old-school fashion. While the timing seems to work, with the possibility of one or two days between Jones Beach and a potential festival, the question remains if this mature incarnation of Phish will bring their traveling caravan and their families up to the edge of America for a weekend party. A relic of times gone by, arguments both for and against a return to the hallowed Air Force Base in Loring, Maine make sense. On one had, Limestone is piece of Phish history, defining many summer weekends, and the band’s return to prominence wouldn’t be fully complete without a 3.0 festival at Limestone. We had The Great Went and Lemonwheel in the first go-round, and IT in the second. It is only natural to head back to the vast magical playground of legend, allowing east coast fans to drive, not fly cross country, to a Phish festival.

10.30.09 - Indio

That being said, that was then and this is now. Limestone is a sacred slice of Phish history, a place in time and space where pieces of our hearts and souls reside forever. Those days of traffic, camping, rainstorms, Northern sunsets, and endless blue skies can never be recreated, so why even try? Phish is older and so is their fanbase, we’ve been there and done that – thrice. And who wants to deal with the logistics of getting up all the way up there again? Plus, without a party-based scene for the band, what would be the perks of being in the middle of nowhere for a couple of nights, when they can stay in posh hotels playing elsewhere. With stronger rumors of Indio on the horizon for October, it’s hard to believe that Phish will throw two festivals in three months, and with the ease, bliss, and resorts surrounding Southern California’s Empire Polo Fields, why would they try anything else?

Jones Beach "Stadium"

An original set of dates that leaked just before the official tour announcement included two Radio City shows following Jones Beach. However, any chatter of a two-night stand at New York City’s iconic theatre has fizzled out. Unless things are being kept incredibly under wraps, the likelihood of these materializing seems very slim. So the question remains, are we bidding adieu in the stadium surroundings of Jones Beach, or will something be added to end an extensive summer in style? A leg that features Phish’s marquee shows of summer – The Greek and Telluride – and their two most classic summer venues in Deer Creek and Alpine, deserves a better ending than the overcrowded and over-patrolled environs of Jones Beach. But whether or not anything will actually be added to the tour is completely up in the air. But for now, the rumor mill spins on.

Anybody from here going to Wakarusa? Just out of curiosity.

Also(IV?): I may be headed back to Hattiesburg in late April. 4/21: Billy Martin and two folks I can’t remember, at the BoomBoom Room; 4/22: This Side Up; 4/23: Chance Fisher

Probably can only make TSU and/or CF, due to prior plans for a friend’s birthday, but any of you Southerners should check it out. I’m sure Lycan would be thrilled to have another BlackBoarder or two for some of his shows. I had a blast in January, and Lycan is a first-class guy. Southern hospitality at its phinest

Good afternoon / evening everyone….did not have a chance at all to stop by say hi and lurk. Crazy snowstorm today bringing high winds, heavy wet snow, ice, and a hectic day at work. Finally caught up to LOST and about to watch it in 10.

KWL….are you heading to Denver to watch the 3d movie in 2 weeks? I was going to see The Avett Brothers, but slacked off in buying tickets and now they are sold out. Might go for plan B and head to the movie. Plan C entails heading down towards Salida and camping if the weather improves.

really great stuff by Mr. C and others, re: taking part of the peak experience / elated feeling from shows back into our real lives.

Something tells me that’s why Phish got back together.

I filled to the brim last year. Something I really needed again in my life. Lately, feels like running on fumes.

Glad to share in the positive and real thoughts on this board.

    Evenin’ folks!

Bummed I missed out on kicking gcub in the nuts fest. Glad you’ve come around on SOAM, man. Ready to give Cinci ’09 a try?

Just spent several minutes cracking up over the numerous varieties of footbell notations. You guys are awesome.

I like the discussion about personas/walking through gates. I’m going to spend some time pondering this. I can only think of one friend of mine at this point who uses that technique. It’s funny, though; I and pretty much all my friends have been going to shows for so long, all kinds of shows, so frequently that I think what were once show personas have blurred into real life people.

Music is so entrenched in our lives that…geez, I don’t know how to finish that thought. I do kind of remember my life before my first concert, but everything changed from that moment on. I would hate to have to change back into that guy for any reason. I probably sound really pretentious right now, gonna shut up.

  10. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Robear … about a month ago you wrote something to the effect of … “to all you who are stuck in a bad relationship, realize that better things can come along” and then you made reference to your current GF bringing you breakfast or something.

Are you still feeling that, or have things changed?

  11. Robear Says:

anyone notice? miner put the poster from 10/27/95 Wings stadium today.

that’s the ‘noah’s ark’ show I’m always pimpin’ with the Jedi speak ‘Bowie’ and the sweating walls.

  16. Robear Says:

cub, the show was in a hockey arena, with plywood over the ice. it got so hot and sweaty, plus the powerhouse fungus was in attendance.

‘And they passed out, two by two’ i.e. Noah’s Ark.

  17. Robear Says:

it’s a Mobb Deep lyric @ Henry. maybe you knew that….

  18. Gavinsdad Says:

@gcub: you’re right. At all my shows about a half hour before the lights drop I call my wife up and say gnite to her and the kids. Once I hang up I just get ready to blast off. It starts when my stub gets ripped tho for sure.

  19. Gavinsdad Says:

    The Infamous!! Nice 1 Ro

  20. ChefBradford Says:

What a surprisingly great night. My employer (and friend/father figure) had emergency heart surgery a couple of weeks back, so my coworker/employer/manager and I have been working extra a lot. I drop by this evening to see if she needs to take off for awhile. My boss is there, first time I’ve seen him since before the surgery, and he’s looking great. I mean, great. Feeling great too, as far as I can tell. He goes on to thank me for my work, and tells me that I’m getting a raise. Hooo!

Then, after, another friend of mine got me surprisingly ‘baned

My buddy’s getting healthy fast, I got a raise, I got ‘baned, I’m about to watch a Terry Gilliam movie.

    It Was A Good Day…..
