A Summer Finale?

The Gorge '09 (A. Headington)

One lingering question regarding summer tour remains, even after all the tickets have gone on sale: Where will the tour actually end? If we are to believe things as they stand, Phish will play their west coast and Midwestern shows, and then invite everyone back the east coast for two random midweek shows at Jones Beach. This plan seems just a tad strange, leaving everybody hanging in the New York area after a Wednesday night finale. Since when has summer tour ended on a Wednesday? This routing, however, does leave the door wide open for a day off on Thursday followed by a weekend multi-night farewell. And there have been some rumors floating around.

One of the scenarios that has been circulating in cyberspace has Phish making another trek up to Limestone, Maine to put an exclamation point on summer 2010 in old-school fashion. While the timing seems to work, with the possibility of one or two days between Jones Beach and a potential festival, the question remains if this mature incarnation of Phish will bring their traveling caravan and their families up to the edge of America for a weekend party. A relic of times gone by, arguments both for and against a return to the hallowed Air Force Base in Loring, Maine make sense. On one had, Limestone is piece of Phish history, defining many summer weekends, and the band’s return to prominence wouldn’t be fully complete without a 3.0 festival at Limestone. We had The Great Went and Lemonwheel in the first go-round, and IT in the second. It is only natural to head back to the vast magical playground of legend, allowing east coast fans to drive, not fly cross country, to a Phish festival.

10.30.09 - Indio

That being said, that was then and this is now. Limestone is a sacred slice of Phish history, a place in time and space where pieces of our hearts and souls reside forever. Those days of traffic, camping, rainstorms, Northern sunsets, and endless blue skies can never be recreated, so why even try? Phish is older and so is their fanbase, we’ve been there and done that – thrice. And who wants to deal with the logistics of getting up all the way up there again? Plus, without a party-based scene for the band, what would be the perks of being in the middle of nowhere for a couple of nights, when they can stay in posh hotels playing elsewhere. With stronger rumors of Indio on the horizon for October, it’s hard to believe that Phish will throw two festivals in three months, and with the ease, bliss, and resorts surrounding Southern California’s Empire Polo Fields, why would they try anything else?

Jones Beach "Stadium"

An original set of dates that leaked just before the official tour announcement included two Radio City shows following Jones Beach. However, any chatter of a two-night stand at New York City’s iconic theatre has fizzled out. Unless things are being kept incredibly under wraps, the likelihood of these materializing seems very slim. So the question remains, are we bidding adieu in the stadium surroundings of Jones Beach, or will something be added to end an extensive summer in style? A leg that features Phish’s marquee shows of summer – The Greek and Telluride – and their two most classic summer venues in Deer Creek and Alpine, deserves a better ending than the overcrowded and over-patrolled environs of Jones Beach. But whether or not anything will actually be added to the tour is completely up in the air. But for now, the rumor mill spins on.

  5. KWL Says:

  6. Mr. Completely Says:

“Lately, feels like running on fumes….wish i could hit the rewind. things have taken a turn for the worse.”

Our chief vibe-doctor is in need of some BB love. He’s too selfless to ask for it but it sounds like things are not the way they should be down NorCal way and if there’s anyone on this board that’s deserving of a Phishthoughts love bomb it’s our man Robear so everyone please step up and show the man what you think of him, k?

You don’t even have to tell us what it is, Ro. GF? Kid troubles? Floods, pestilence and a plague of stinging critters? Mexican mafia and their toxic runoff? Capitalist vampires pimping the sacred plants?

Doesn’t matter. Whatever’s got you down, it to shall pass, and you’ll be back out in the clear light.

I’ll be thinking of you and I hope you know many more of your brothers and sisters will too.

    Where’s the meetup sheet?

  8. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

I’ve said it many times … Robear’s Phish card bears member number 00001 on it. He is the kindest phan I’ve met in the 16 years I’ve been at this.

  9. Lycanthropist Says:

    evening BB!

    how goes it with everyone

    – LOST blew my mind tonight
    – Chef is coming back to the burg
    – And I got a fresh bane.

    Good night for me.

  10. gratefulcub Says:

Don’t know if anyone has paid attention to this, but a federal court today ruled that the FCC does not have jurisdiction over the internet. This means that the providers are free to do as they please.

The big loser in this is uTorrent type of activities. Basically, the large sites will be able to pay for more bandwith, or whatever jargon, while smaller sites will crawl. Not a good thing. Google net neutrality, others will explain it much better than I.

  11. ChefBradford Says:

Lycan- see my obtrusive posts above. Good night for me, too

  12. Dr. Pronoia Says:

@Robear – In case Mr C has correctly intuited a dip in your ever-present positivity, please accept my heartiest good vibes and cyber man hug. To date you are the only person from BB I’ve met in person, and you’re good people in my book.

  13. cal Says:

Maybe it’s just that Mr. C’s concept has just become the norm for our group after all these years…we’ve taken so many pieces of the peak experience away that they’ve replaced most of the…um…

More meditation needed. I love the shit that comes up on here. Gotta hit the sack, g’night everybody.

    (*krling*)

  14. cal Says:

p.s. I don’t even worry about that Robear cat…he’s very clearly got it together and I haven’t even met ‘im. But all the same–mad vibes yer way, bro. The universe takes care of its own, no worries.

  17. Lycanthropist Says:

    glad to hear it chef..

we need to send some of our good luck over towards Robear it seems.

    Good vibes to you Ro!

  18. Lycanthropist Says:

    btw chef

did you ever get around to checking out 3-4-10?

quite possibly one of our best first sets.

  19. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

Stick it out Robear! Things will end up alright. Regardless, good vibes are being sent by me and many, many others in the BB crew.

  20. Mr. Completely Says:

    just wondering,

if all the different parts of you that you think of you change over the years for one thing or another,

    who is noticing the changes?

yes, I’m in the right mood for Lost tonight

  21. ChefBradford Says:

Actually yeah, I got a chance to check most of it out a week or two ago. Very nice

  22. Luther Justice Says:

    @Robear
Cyber hug from this guy too. If it helps to think of getting the hug from Mr. T, go with that. I’m sure he’d be cool w/it.

  23. Lycanthropist Says:

i think you just tied my brain in a knot Mr. C

i am trying to figure out what you mean

  24. Mr. Completely Says:

…including the part about not quite making sense

“…think of AS you for one REASON or another”

    or something

  25. Lycanthropist Says:

    yo BK!
